And in fandom news from the past few weeks:

  • Allie Brosh's book is apparently available in October. I assumed, what with how ill she's been, that she just wouldn't have been working on it, but no, apparently it's coming soon. Which pleases me. I haven't seen anyone else talking about it, so in case you're interested and hadn't heard, there's the link.

  • I'm getting on with the main plot in Fallout 3 again, and you know, the more I think about the storyline, the more annoyed I am about what a wasted opportunity I think Bethesda had. Spoilers for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas )

  • I have been listening to this fanmix, and I want to rec it, because it makes me really happy. so maybe it would make you guys happy too. I didn't even know Electro Swing was a thing, but apparently it is. Also, it's a fanmix for Benny/F!Courier from Fallout: New Vegas, so if you ship that, you may love it doubly hard. NB: I cannot be held accountable if you don't love it.

And I was going to talk about some of the animals my cat has been bringing in as 'presents' lately, but I remembered in my last post I said I wasn't going to make another post about animal death for a while. Suffice it to say, I'm half horrified and half impressed.

And in the last few weeks, I saw three films. Three whole films.

The first two weeks ago was The Internship, which I saw mainly because it had Vince Vaughn in it and he looked like he might not be a dick to people in it. Which I was correct about! Although there were some slightly odd things in the film, overall he and Owen Wilson were both quite nice, and quite nice to other people. It was a slightly odd film - a lot of the scenes sort of felt like they were ad-libbed, and maybe they should have done more ad-libbing until they got something better/funnier. And the ending was basically a big ass-kiss to Google. But overall I enjoyed. And I somehow got a fluff pairing out of it. Mild spoilers )

Unfortunately, Vince Vaughn has turned out to be the latest actor I liked who disappointed me horribly, mainly by having fairly shady politics. It's nothing that would make me want to stop watching him, but apparently he's agreed to make a conservative TV show about his politics. So the night is young!

Speaking of which, I'd forgotten that the next Mark Wahlberg film I was looking forward to also featured Denzel Washington trying to do a comedy role for once, which I wanted to support. I may go see it. For Denzel.

Anyway. Then last week, I went to see Now You See Me and Pacific Rim.

Now You See Me, some spoilers )

Pacific Rim, some probably pretty big spoilers )

I think that's all my fandom news. Also I have started listening to Welcome To Night Vale, but I think I mentioned that in the last post. Also a few other things. But these are the main ones I think.

I'm going to Leeds tomorrow with my mother, because we are going on holiday with my two oldest nephews in less than two weeks. I need some holiday clothes. But I don't know exactly what I need or want. So tomorrow will probably be interesting, to say the least.

I have been slowly rewatching Arrested Development. I just got up to the episodes with Ann Veal in them, and they keep being all 'her?', but it doesn't make any sense because (apart from her first episode) it's Mae Whitman. MAE WHITMAN. Here is what Mae Whitman looks like:

superiorpics.com - mae whitman
(from superiorpics.com)

Or how about this:

maebirdwing.twitter.com - mae whitman
(from maebirdwing.twitter.com)

And she doesn't look like that in the show, obviously. But she's still Mae Whitman. So it doesn't make any sense that they would look down on her. Instead they should be saying "Very good, George Michael, well done". NATURALLY they are all blindsided by their jealousy over George Michael and the fact he would go outside the family for happiness. BUT STILL.

In Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Mae Whitman plays Roxy Richter:

itsasickness.com - roxy richter
(from itsasickness.com)

She is a lesbian and people sleep with her and then say it doesn't count, because they were only bi-curious. She says she's bi-furious.

I LOVE HER. Apparently she's in Parenthood now. And did the voice of one of the main characters of Avatar: The Last Airbender for a long while. And was also the voice of Tinkerbell. I should probably catch up with current TV.

I'm not crazy. I know Ann is no Maeby, or Lindsey, or Lucille. But she's still Mae Whitman. And she's still Ann. So Arrested Development is confusing me a bit at the moment. Happily, I'm finding Michael too pretty to look at again though.

I still find it hilarious that Maeby and Ann apparently did a show together where they were BFFs for years before they did Arrested Development. And I still think - as I did before I found out about that show - that Maeby and Ann should grow up and work in a detective's agency together. Maeby because she likes messing with people, and Ann because she is Christian, and she loves JUSTICE. There's just a chance the new movie/series of Arrested Development won't give me that, I've just realised.

In conclusion: I would gay for Mae Whitman. The Bluths should love Ann more.

Also, this woman is incredibly funny. I love her. And I watched most of the first episode of Coronation Street tonight, and none of the second. BECAUSE I GIVE UP, CORRIE. I GIVE UP.

Being at Eastercon also reminded me that there's a lot of things I love that I don't talk about. Hence:

My computer is going extremely slowly. It says it's backing something up, but it's been doing that for about three hours. slkfjsdkf.

Also I am SO TIRED.
girlofprey: (Default)
Things I have gotten from town today:

  • A sick note for 4 weeks from my doctor.

  • A biscuit jar shaped like a teashop.

It does occur to me that, lovely as that biscuit jar is, if I'm really going to try to be sensible about money, at some point I'm probably going to have to stop being ludicrous about what I spend it on.

Talk about benefits and money )

In other news, I did watch quite a bit of Comic Relief on Friday night. I actually watched the finale of Let's Dance last Saturday, and kept meaning to post about it, but never remembered to. Essentially, I've not been that into the Mighty Boosh lately and was never a big Howard/Vince or Julian/Noel shipper, but it still made me incredibly happy when Julian turned up dressed as Heathcliff after Noel's dance. And I was ridiculously attracted to Russell Kane, but that's something I've just had to get used to with Let's Dance over the years. Oh, and I was quite happy that the two who won it won it. They were really good. WHO KNEW JOHN BARTON COULD TAPDANCE? He has skills beside being a sex symbol, though sadly still not parenting.

With regards to actual Comic Relief, I didn't watch the first few hours, and the bits I enjoyed the most were probably some of the much later ones, namely Newport State Of Mind, and the Axis of Awesome's massive four-chord-songs-song. And I quite loved Ron and "the albino kid" offering to go to Africa together. Is it just me, or are all the sketches with Smithy mostly funny because of the lines/reactions of everyone BUT Smithy in them? But maybe he's the lynchpin that holds it all together. Or maybe I just don't like James Cordon. Hmm. Whatever. But anyway. I was looking forward to Uptown Downstairs Abbey, but there weren't that many lines that actually made me laugh in the end. Mostly the one by Olivia Coleman. Also, is the footman really evil in the show? That seems like an unfortunate stereotype. But anyway, I quite enjoyed it on the whole. And I was wondering if the disaster in Japan might mean people didn't donate as much this year, but apparently it was their most successful night ever. So that was nice too.

Other than that, I have mostly been playing Morrowind (again), getting furious that Morrowind doesn't have the EXACT FEATURES I WANT IT TO, and getting into a bunch of new webcomics. I don't know what happened. I was on the No Rest For The Wicked site, mooching around and hoping vainly for a sudden update, and ended up on the links page, and looking into a bunch of webcomics on there. And I saw a link to another webcomic on the page of a webcomic I read pretty regularly, and I ended up reading that. And then those webcomics kept mentioning or referencing OTHER webcomics, which I ended up looking into. And then I had about 5 or 6 new ones I was reading. They are, and you can pretty much take these as recs:

Webcomic recs )

In other news, blah. I don't have any money. Oh, also I went to an alternative comics fair, the 2nd Leeds Alternative Comics Fair, on Saturday, where the writer of Bad Machinery was going to be, and, um, bought a bunch of Scary Go Round and Bad Machinery stuff. But that was totally worth it. Also on the same day, I found out where the Leeds Cathedral was, which I may have seen before, but this time knowing what it was. And I found out about the Craft Centre in Leeds, which apparently I'd not found out about ever before. That was also pretty great. I got home at the end of the day though, and found out my parents, who'd had my two nephews for the day, had slightly done me by taking them to Cannonhall Farm for the day, a place I have been interested in going to for some weeks. Growl. Next time, they have promised. It's always next time.

Talk about my birthday next week, and the possibility of asking for a Playstation 3 )

And that's pretty much all my news, I think. Most of it, anyway. I have to pick a film to do a pairing picspam of this week, and I don't know which one to pick. I'd like to choose one that doesn't have a really messed up pairing in it, but I'm no longer convinced I have many of those. Also I'd probably end up feeling like I had to do three, for the rest of the 'run' until my next non-visual pairing/something else post. I don't know. Mostly I'd liked to post this week's at some time before midnight. That's my main aim for the next one.

I was watching Coronation Street at the weekend, and suddenly started seeing possible Sarah/David incest. Which was unexpected.

Theory and spec about Heroes season 2, spoilers up to 2.07 )

God, people really do make some awesome vids. Rama Lama Bang Bang by counteragent. Angel/Dr Who. Lilah and Yvonne: two hardworking, professional zombies with lots of spunk and heart. Might need to get that song somewhere.

In other news, I have work for tomorrow. I have to be there at 8:30, but hey - work! Hopefully which will last, or be replaced by other work. So I can get a slightly better handle on my cash. The only unfortunate part is that I haven't done any of the cleaning I said I was going to do with my few days off. But I did spend most of today curled into a ball trying to ward off stomach cramps. Anyway. There's always the weekend. I need to fix the light in the bathroom as well. But work! Now I just need to find out where it is.

And this one just makes me laugh. Oh.

Oh, stuff

More on Emmerdale )

The Roman's Empire finale was wonderfully chock full of gay though. I love Jesus. And Seb. They were pretty obviously setting it up for a second series though. Although with lines like "I have 3 beautiful daughters and every right to drill for oil", and "No, he's much too clever for that. We'll just have to give up", I wouldn't argue. DVD now, please.

I went to see Spiderman 3 again last night, out of a general desire to get out of the house. Spoilers, probably )

Some of fandom is quite good at the moment.

Yuletide

Dec. 25th, 2006 11:30 am
girlofprey: (Lost Sawyer Pimp Smugglers)
My Yuletide story. American Gothic, Matt and Lucas (spoilers for Dr Death Takes a Holiday). Slashy gen. It is perfect and great. Go read it .

And mine seems to have gone down well too. Hurrah :D
girlofprey: (Bernard Bitches Want to Dance?)
Yesterday was an odd and frantic day at work because I spent most of it trying to read fic. Because Guede_Mazaka wrote me fic. Casino Royale fic. James Bond/Le Chiffre. It is violent and smooth and it is great, and I stopped before the spy in Glasgow could read about them having sex. OH GOD I LOVE GUEDE_MAZAKA. She offered me a drabble, she wrote me fic. You should all go read it and leave her praise. And then write me more fic. Or else I'll love her more than you (maybe). Them's the breaks.

Today was simply exhausting, as I took the afternoon off to go Christmas shopping. It went much better than the other Saturday, though I once again BOUGHT THE HEAVIEST THING FIRST. I spent a bit, but I have pretty much everything now except one or two people I have back-up ideas for. And I still have a half-day holiday left, which I totally won't just spend swanning around Leeds drinking swanky coffee and laughing at shoppers and people who have to work. And I still have a few Saturdays. Two Saturdays. That's not a lot. But mostly, whee! Also, I forgot it was Jack's birthday not three weeks after Christmas, so I can totally feel justified in buying him all the other stuff I saw after getting his big present. So hurrah.

In fairness, this may be the only Christmas with Cash To Spend I ever have. Or at least for a few years after this.

I still haven't written my Yuletide fic. I still haven't completely finished that ONE application form I have. I didn't get any Christmas decorationy things. I may need to go to Wakefield as well to get the cats' Christmas present. I have done something to my internet address bar. But I love James Bond (Craig!Bond). And Le Chiffre. They sort of live in my head now. Yay :)
girlofprey: (Gw Mac/Guy butch/sundance)
I love Daniel Handler. I would like that to be known. Book the Thirteenth, with spoilers )

I have also finished Blackadder Goes Forth. They all wear leather and suspenders, and I don't think that's very fair. But it is great. I love Kevin Darling. This probably isn't much of a suprise, given that I've been spreading the news far and wide, but - I do. Why did no-one tell me he was played by Tim McInnerny, aka Percy from series 2? Why did it have to come from this guy? I love him. I love that he spent two lifetimes as Edmund's adoring, unappreciated idiot friend, before getting himself reincarnated as his frustrated slightly smarter enemy. I love that he is still TIED UP WITH LOVE FOR HIM and doesn't know why. He twitches! He breaks his pencil! Blackadder calls him 'Darling', and he can't say anything about it! It is beautiful. And they are a good pairing, which is nice. Blackadder stares at him, a lot. At one point Darling says something about not having been born yesterday, and Blackadder says 'that's a shame, we could have started your personality from scratch', and I love it when people say things like that, because it's basically like saying 'I'd really like you if you weren't such a complete tit'. Lucas Buck says something similar about Matt in one episode of American Gothic, and it is yay. Anyway. WHY ISN'T THERE MORE BRITISH COMEDY SLASH??? But there is actually fic for this pairing, which is a beautiful and rare occurence for me. Rabbitholes and Foxholes features the twitch, and OH GOD OH GOD. No Man's Land rescues me from the bleakness of the final episode. Choose Life gets a special mention just for the suggestion that Darling might alphabetise the paperclips. Yay. And Tinlow Industries is...an AU where they're both 18 in America, working as cashiers and bagging boys in the same shop. It's not actually that bad, even if they once again have Darling EVEN CAPABLE OF SAYING OR UNDERSTANDING WHAT HE WANTS. Dude.

I love Yuletide for supplying me with most of these fics. I keep thinking about signing up for this year (if I can), then backing out because of my general intertia in that area. Also there are strange new rules I'm not sure I understand. And I might have missed the fandom sign-up date. Hmph.

Anyway. Back to Lemony Snicket. I'm pretty sure I won't finish it tonight, but I have some train journeys tomorrow. It's all good. Then maybe I'll finally get round to writing that con report. Um. Yes.
girlofprey: (Anton Seer)
I do actually think that the majority of horrendous reading for uni is behind me, for a little while. At least, I don't think there are any more novels for Gothic in the upcoming weeks. Plenty of photocopies and research for Caroline Drama (that's right [livejournal.com profile] nerdcakes, Rachael has 'Caroline' lectures and seminars. In your FACE! :p ), and oh yes, The Metamorphoses by Ovid. But I have reading week for that. And there's the fact that I've only read 160 pages of the Mysteries of Udolpho, out of 600 - but we can all do me a favour and pretend that's not true, and yes. A much less stressful rest-of-term. Aside from essays. But yes.

Rachael has no money. Rachael bought Sun Tzu's The Art of War and Eddie Izzard's 'Circle' and the new Empire magazine anyway. Rachael perhaps not the smartest cookie in the box. Eddie Izzard really awfully funny though. 'Drink this wine, it's a merlot?'. Why are all his shows filmed in New York? ::puzzled::

Also I semi-intend to get inspiration for Anton/Zavulon bunnies from 'The Art of War'. Therefore it's practically a public service. People are writing really good fic for Night Watch. Fic with plot. And dialogue. And things that happen. The bar is raised, people. But ee. I have a fandom. People are writing in the fandom. People that aren't me. Me and My Fandom. It is small but it is good. Yes :)

That said; something I've never done before.

Recs )

And [livejournal.com profile] slippery_fish is apparently getting an at least somewhat Anton/Zavulon-ish fic betad, and I just know it will go up tonight, or tomorrow, and I won't get to it until Sunday or Monday or something, because my parents are coming down tomorrow. And possibly bringing Jack. But mostly bringing themselves and my airer and my CDs and money so that I won't have to pay for things, and god yes. But I don't intend to stop off and check my e-mail.

It would be nice if I had the internet at home (damn you, Wanadoo!). But in another way, it's quite nice not having it. From a writing perspective. When I have the internet on my computer I tend to look for other people's fic more than writing my own, and feel like I should be uploading it at the end of every draft. Without, I get to have quiet time wherein I can just write and it's nothing to do with the internet or fandom, in a way. Hmm. Most fanficcers obviously do not feel like this. Perhaps I have issues. But either way, it is nice.
girlofprey: (Hooks! ::swoon::)
Downloaded RealPlayer in an attempt play Jekesta's Drop the Dead Donkey DVDs, after an attempt to watch an episode on Paramount was cruelly thwarted by the rest of the family. Well, it downloaded fine, but sadly it still won't play them as DVDs. All I get is the sound. It said something about downloading something to play the content, and then that it couldn't download that particular something. All I know is I can't watch lovely Damien 24/7. Growl.

Does anyone else think that (B&Q?) advert almost ordering you to 'tell (B&Q) what happens in your kitchen' is slightly frightening and 1984-ish? Hmm.

I screencapped the last half-hour or so of Die Hard. It turned up some suprising discoveries and some lovely shots of McClane's hair. Tiring though. And my stupid DVD player keeps shutting itself off at the critical moment! Just because I want it to stop going backward at 1/2 and start going forward at 1/4 so I can pause it and take a screenshot! Growl!

I hearby rec [livejournal.com profile] guede_mazaka's Divinity series. It's a Boondock Saints/Once Upon a Time in Mexico crossover with plenty of Norse myth thrown in, and my head's in too much of a funny place to read it but it looks damn good, and she's a great writer anyhow, so if you're into the fandoms check it out.

I've had an idea for a Nanowrimo novel, which I think could easily stretch to 50,000 words if I gave it a go. The problem is if I can set enough time out of studying and, y'know, sleeping in November. But I really am quite taken with the idea, and if it was Nanowrimo and the challenge was just to get the damn thing out on the page, I think I'd probably have a fair whack at it. Hmm. Details, details, cut in case you're not interested in the least )

Today was pretty bad family-wise. I'm pretty close to posting all the sordid details just so I don't have to keep making veiled and I'm sure annoying references to 'family drama'. And partially so I can stop worrying anyone reading thinks I'm whining about a few arguments. But I don't want to dump it on anyone either, and make them uncomfortable. And I don't want an excuse to go on and on about it here. Here is the place for joy and laughter and squee, and...pretty icons. Sigh.

It's really hot. Really hot :(
