And in fandom news from the past few weeks:

  • Allie Brosh's book is apparently available in October. I assumed, what with how ill she's been, that she just wouldn't have been working on it, but no, apparently it's coming soon. Which pleases me. I haven't seen anyone else talking about it, so in case you're interested and hadn't heard, there's the link.

  • I'm getting on with the main plot in Fallout 3 again, and you know, the more I think about the storyline, the more annoyed I am about what a wasted opportunity I think Bethesda had. Spoilers for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas )

  • I have been listening to this fanmix, and I want to rec it, because it makes me really happy. so maybe it would make you guys happy too. I didn't even know Electro Swing was a thing, but apparently it is. Also, it's a fanmix for Benny/F!Courier from Fallout: New Vegas, so if you ship that, you may love it doubly hard. NB: I cannot be held accountable if you don't love it.

And I was going to talk about some of the animals my cat has been bringing in as 'presents' lately, but I remembered in my last post I said I wasn't going to make another post about animal death for a while. Suffice it to say, I'm half horrified and half impressed.

And in the last few weeks, I saw three films. Three whole films.

The first two weeks ago was The Internship, which I saw mainly because it had Vince Vaughn in it and he looked like he might not be a dick to people in it. Which I was correct about! Although there were some slightly odd things in the film, overall he and Owen Wilson were both quite nice, and quite nice to other people. It was a slightly odd film - a lot of the scenes sort of felt like they were ad-libbed, and maybe they should have done more ad-libbing until they got something better/funnier. And the ending was basically a big ass-kiss to Google. But overall I enjoyed. And I somehow got a fluff pairing out of it. Mild spoilers )

Unfortunately, Vince Vaughn has turned out to be the latest actor I liked who disappointed me horribly, mainly by having fairly shady politics. It's nothing that would make me want to stop watching him, but apparently he's agreed to make a conservative TV show about his politics. So the night is young!

Speaking of which, I'd forgotten that the next Mark Wahlberg film I was looking forward to also featured Denzel Washington trying to do a comedy role for once, which I wanted to support. I may go see it. For Denzel.

Anyway. Then last week, I went to see Now You See Me and Pacific Rim.

Now You See Me, some spoilers )

Pacific Rim, some probably pretty big spoilers )

I think that's all my fandom news. Also I have started listening to Welcome To Night Vale, but I think I mentioned that in the last post. Also a few other things. But these are the main ones I think.

I'm going to Leeds tomorrow with my mother, because we are going on holiday with my two oldest nephews in less than two weeks. I need some holiday clothes. But I don't know exactly what I need or want. So tomorrow will probably be interesting, to say the least.

It's my sister's birthday tomorrow and my ESA assessment the day after that. Ughhh.

I've been replaying Infamous 2 lately, mostly because I'm still upset about the lack of Cole/Bertrand slash. Also the lack of any fandom at all for Infamous, as far as I can tell, so I can't even go look at it and pretend I might talk to people someday. ALSO THAT. Mostly I have figured out, or rediscovered, that the reason I probably find them so slashy is because- bizarrely - they keep Cole's dialogue the same for all his cutscenes whether you play him as good or evil. So they give you a lot of reasons in-game for why Cole might hate Bertrand in either case, but they don't actually talk about them ever, so it ends up seeming like Cole is just fixated on him for no good reason. As though he ends most of his cutscenes thinking "Bertrand. What's his deal, anyway?", and then staring moodily off into the distance, thinking about what IS his deal.

Also I relearned that Bertrand is despicable. Pretty much completely. BUT I DON'T CARE. Here the scene where Cole and Bertrand first meet, found on Youtube. The actual (short) conversation doesn't start till about 5:04, but if you care it's worth watching all of it just to see what Cole - and the player - has to do just to catch him. Also it's a Let's Play, so you do have deal with the player talking over it. But other than that.

SPOILERS )

Also, in my ongoing obsession with Southern accents in videogames, I have noticed that the only accents that seem to get a reprieve are Texan accents, or other similarly 'cowboy'-ish ones. Apparently they are okay. Everyone else = evil.

Also I've learned that I really do quite like Kuo and Nix. It's a shame the game is so racist is about them. It's a shame the game is so racist. Note: Infamous 2 is in many ways a terrible game. You shouldn't buy it. Sadly I already bought it and sort of love the gameplay, graphics and a bunch of the characters. Also the music. But I do not really recommend anyone else get into it.

But anyway. In non-Infamous 2 related news, I also went to the cinema this week. I was trying to see Ted before it goes out of cinemas, but the next showing of it was too late for me, so I went to see The Watch instead. I'd sort of wanted to see it because of Vince Vaughn and Richard Ayoade, and I quite like the sound of the plot. But I'd heard it was pretty terrible. And it was...pretty terrible. It had some nice moments and some quite funny lines, but so much of it just seemed like dreadful, immature and not that funny adlibbing. Apparently it was quite affected by the Trayvon Martin shooting, which made the screenwriters rewrite a bit so it was more about the alien plotline than the overzealous Neighbourhood Watch antics. Which was probably the right decision, but you can see how it might have affected the story. But on the other hand, they still ended up making a finished film, and that finished film was this one. And, unfortunately, it was also racially sort of appalling.

The ways in which it was racially appalling, some massive spoilers, also some general spoilery talk about it )

So yeah. It was a weird film. Vince Vaughn had some lovely moments though. I KNOW HE'S NOT THE MOST RESPECTED ACTOR OUT THERE, BUT I JUST THINK HE'S SO BEAUTIFUL WHEN HE'S SERIOUS. I want to make GIFS of how his eyes move. He was best in The Cell. He doesn't seem to make films like that anymore. Sadly.

I did see some trailers though. Judge Dredd looks wicked. I don't know why his female trainee has to fight in gunfights without a helmet though. Perhaps they explain it in the film.

Other than that, last week on Tumblr I was searching through a tag, and I found a video that led me to a Youtube account, which seems to deal exclusively in making multifandom songvids for villains. It's called EvilVillainsStudio. Mostly they do bad guys, and a series of same-fandom and cross-fandom pairings for them. It's a little bit like some is making Youtube vids just for me. So I have been watching my way through their videos for the past week or so. A lot of them are really good. This one I watched last night for example, called Sail, which seems to be about what it's like to be a villain and kind of a badass. It does have a lot of quick-cutting of clips, and effects that deliberately make the clips look the wrong colour, or more grainy or scratchy than they are, which is annoying, though I assume it's to cover up the various sources being used, and their filming styles. It's still good though. And if you can ignore a few rubbishy Doctor Who clips, so can I.

I think that's it mostly. Also I've been watching more Poltergeist: The Legacy, which continues ridiculous. I genuinely think it got a bit better in the middle, but we're at the end of Season 1 now, so it's all got a bit more ridiculous and Derek-filled. Also it's my sister's birthday tomorrow. Arrrrrrgh.

Hello! My posting has been a bit sporadic lately. I started my new job, and seem to have no time in the evenings anymore.

So yes, I started my new job. I am working at a company just down the road, checking data as it is purchased from the electoral roll and uploaded to the computers. Mostly it is a bit boring, but we've all picked up the commands and rules pretty quickly (well, most of them). And it's only for a few weeks. And we get to listen to music through the day. So it's all fine. We're getting quality checked on our practice checking now, so it may turn out we're DOING IT COMPLETELY WRONG, or SOME OF US ARE, but so far it all seems to be going alright. Which is nice. I'm going to get paid on Friday. Which is also nice

Mostly I am confused by the fact the internet isn't AWASH WITH REACTIONS TO CASUALTY since Spoiler for last Saturday's episode ). The whole internet. Slash fans unite? Also bewildered and dismayed that BBC are probably not going to bring out a dvd of this series and the last series of Casualty, like tomorrow. I WOULD APPRECIATE THAT ALSO. Oh Toby. I love you so. Your mum should come back occasionally and wear a beautiful coat and look at you.

Tonight I got to watch Vince Vaughn and John Simm, all in one evening, which was quite win. Also Andrea Riseborough. Doing way more than she got to do in Being Human. She's quite great.

In other news, I didn't remember until about 10 o'clock last night that it was Heroes day, so I haven't actually watched it yet. And I haven't been reading the Twilight books. I saw them and thought "oh, usual vampire novel" - actually I thought "Oh, pretty cover!", but after that - and I read a little bit of them and wasn't impressed. But it seems a bit like I have been missing out. I'm fairly tempted to go see the movie. I was anyway, just to see what it's all about. But more so.

I have to go Christmas shopping, also. Pretty soon, really.

Hello

  1. I forgot to mention the funniest part of my going home for Christmas. We always get quite decorated up for Christmas, because mum likes it. So we have light-up Christmas shapes in all the windows, Santa signs outside, the lit-up Christmas tree in the front window. From the outside, it all looks quite nice. Anyway, mum was telling me that the week before I came back, one evening she heard carol singers come to the front door. And she thought "Oh, carol singers", and started looking around for some change. When suddenly from the other room she heard some banging, like someone jumping up. And then my dad shouting "GO ON! GET AWAY! COME BACK WHEN IT'S CHRISTMAS!". He has a thing about children coming round early, like trick-or-treating before Halloween. Apparently the carol singers ran away. My mum had to point out to him that it was in fact going to be Christmas next week, which I think he hadn't realised. People who think their dads are strange, I can only say: NOT AS STRANGE AS MINE.

  2. I also fell quite in love with Adele's new song while I was at my parents', and the video. ETA: I don't know why the girl was dating Sylar for a while there though.

  3. Last weekend was more manic than I could possibly say. I saw three films in two days, two of which were the new St Trinian's one, which I enjoyed. I'm possibly a bit in love with Camilla Fritton. K was down for the weekend, and when we were out on Saturday night wanted to do something sitting down, and there was nothing else we wanted to see on, and I did enjoy it when I saw it on Friday. So. The other film was Fred Claus, which was magically back on last week after going off the week before, and I totally got to the one 10:30am showing a day, a mere twenty minutes late. Except that it turned out to be the one 11:30am showing. Anyway, it turns out that Vince Vaughn: still beautiful. But I got quite stressed out over the weekend, to the point of sort of wanting to push other shoppers as they went past me. On Sunday night I remembered I was about due to have a period, and probably this had something to do with it.

  4. I considered taking Monday off work sick, but decided against it. On Monday night I went to my first dentist appointment in about three years, and that was suprisingly quite nice. It turns out that three years of eating quite a lot crap has apparently not affected my teeth too much, although they're still not great. And the bits I was worried about, the bits I could feel worn down on my front teeth, are apparently perfectly normal. My wisdom are doing something a bit funny, but generally things are fine. There was some extortion at the end, but other than that it was all quite pleasant. Hurrah.

  5. On Tuesday, after failing to get to bed at a reasonable hour AGAIN I did take the day off sick, and stayed in to clean the flat, and ended up having a two and a half hour conversation with my mother when she called. Which was nice. Did get the flat a bit tidier. Since then have been mostly working and making sure I go to bed earlier. Friday night involved Mr and Mrs Smith, which was quite good, and I liked Brad Pitt in it a lot more than I thought I would.

  6. I think people should know that on Friday I read [livejournal.com profile] ironicdutchess' journal at work, and it was perfectly fine. Then I went to read [livejournal.com profile] nerdcakes', and got an Adult Content warning. Which wanted me to confirm I was over 14. Dude.

  7. I had some thoughts and reasons why I thought part of my being stressed out was to do with Alias season 2, but it essentially boils down to OMG SYDNEY YOU SUCK, YOU ARE NOT IN ANY WAY GOOD ENOUGH FOR JACK. Also, WILL STOP BEING BORING, POSSIBLY TURN OUT TO HAVE BEEN PROGRAMMED A BIT, WHICH JACK HAS TO FIX?

Things which are annoying me right now:

  • See above.

  • People who come to the Probation office and get impatient with me trying to get their name right through a not too great microphone. I need to to get your details correctly on the computer and check who you're actually meant to be seeing for your appointment. I'm sorry you're a felon. BUT THIS IS NOT A VACATION.

  • People in the Probation Office who make appointments with their clients but don't put it on the system, so I don't know what's going on.

  • There is no central heating in my flat. Everything is done off storage heaters, and the hot water comes through a boiler. You can do things with timing but generally your choices are between freezing and boiling. I've taken a number of showers lately that have gone cold in the middle. I've spent most of the last few weeks being in love with my duvet, my hot water bottle, my jumper and my hairdryer, not necessarily in that order or exclusively.

On the other hand:

  • It randomly and vaguely occured to me that Sawyer and Sayid would be the best Gay FBI Lovers I'd ever seen.

  • It turns out that Green and Black's Mint bar is quite nice. It's like a big bar of After 8.

  • The (gay) writer of Disturbia said in an interview that there was absolutely nothing homoerotic in it, there was in his next film but not in this one. I found this interview while looking around for Kale/Turner slash, and just before finding someone's review where they said Kale was totally gay for his best friend.

A Poll

In your knowledge/opinion, the Golden Compass movie:

  • Using spoilers from the rest of the books in the trilogy?

  • Making up extra stuff for their own purposes?
If it's the first one, I may actually have to avoid it, which will be disappointing.

Had flat inspection on Thursday. Didn't get all the cleaning I wanted to done, but it turns out that where things can't be cleaned, wiping is just as effective for a visual test. Sadly not everything could be wiped, but still, they haven't written any angry letters to me yet. And I like the flat being clean. It's amazing how much bigger places look when you hoover the floor. It needs a bit of a dust and the drawers tidying, and a bookcase for the books and stuff on the floor, but other than that I'm quite pleased with it at the moment.

And then last night I went to London to see Interpol play at the Alexandra Palace. I need to update LJ more often I think. The gig )

Then I had to get back to Cee's flat by myself at 11 o'clock at night. I had a route all planned out on the buses because I didn't particularly want to take the tube, but after getting a bit lost then finding my bus route again and having three of my buses go by packed with Interpol fans, I decided to sod it and got a bus to the tube station. It turns out the tube is packed at quarter to midnight on Fridays, or at least the ones going to Kings Cross. So it was all fine. And then this morning Cee took me for breakfast, to a lovely place that offered pancakes I failed to take advantage of. And I had a smoothie, though I wasn't expecting the tanginess of the blueberries. Then Cee went off to do some shopping, and I had a wander through Islington. Bought my own Kripy Kremes, and managed to do a bit of Christmas shopping. My schedule for the next few weeks looks like this:

This weekend - Interpol in London
Next weekend - A thing at Newstead Abbey with my parents, briefly
The weekend after - Free
The weekend after that - Last weekend before Christmas, for which I'll have just gone back to my parents

So I need to get a start on it really. Anyway. I came back to Nottingham, and missed my train so had to pay £30 for a new ticket. Which was shitty. But will at least teach me not to miss it again. And I went to see Fred Claus, with my "free" evening. It was a bit beautiful. Vaguely spoilery )

And now I'm home, and my mum just called to say my uncle Bill has died. Which is sad. It's sort of strange because I never really saw all that much of him and my aunt's family, or at least not recently, and he's had terminal cancer for a while. But I did see him ocassionally, and know him, and he was only 65. But them's the breaks, I guess. I mostly feel bad for my aunt. I'm going to try to send her a card, I think. Or send it to my mum to give to her. I think she's been prepared for it for a while too, but still.
