So. I went to the comic convention. Paul Cornell wasn't there, or if he was he was SHIELDED FROM MY EYES. I did have to get up at eight though, which basically left me feeling a bit not-real all day. I decided to eat some lunch before I tried spending any money, which was probably wise. I still spent loads though. But Thought Bubble is only once a year and my arrears have just come through, so eh.

When I got there this morning I was all proud because I'd booked my ticket in advance and could walk past the queue going all the way around the block and just walk in. Then I learned that the queue was FOR people who'd booked in advance, to have their paperwork checked, since everyone had apparently had the same idea. So I had to walk all the way back again. At least it was quick. And I don't know if this is a new thing or I just never really noticed before, but it was a little annoying how a big part of the first aisle was taken up by the major comics publishers. I know it's a comic convention and they're the big suppliers, but I've always seen Thought Bubble advertised mostly as a Small Press and Indie Convention. So to have the first set of stalls taken up with books you could buy in any comic book shop or on Amazon at any time was a little irritating, really. They used to just have stalls somewhere in the middle of the showroom, or on the end of each aisle, so people who were just interested in major titles or in looking for back issues could go there while everyone else wandered around with the indie creators. I don't know, I did see some - I don't know, "well-funded" - titles I'd never seen before, but...it seemed to not really be in the spirit of the convention.

But it was good. I had my usual problem of not being able to talk to the people on the stalls, as though I am literally just going "No, I don't want to speak to the ARTIST, I just want to see the PRODUCTS". But most people were pretty nice about it, and I actually had a chat with one writer about her having come up from Milton Keynes. Huzzah. And I got some art, for the first time ever. Two £5 prints, one of which is a picture of Mako Mori drawn by Nich Angell. You don't get that every day.

Steam, however, continues to irritate me. And Adobe Flash Player - Adobe Flash Player won't let me update the Adobe Flash Player. When it gives me a little notice about a new version being out, I go to download it, go to a nice page claiming to be Step 1 of 3, click the "Update Now" button, and it just sends me to Adobe.com. Is anyone else having this problem? I don't know what to do if it continues. I can still play videos and animations NOW, but in a few updates time I probably won't, and if it still won't let me update it then what? When I go to the Adobe support page it just tells me to check if I have the latest version of Flash Player, and when I click the link it just sends me to the page that eventually sends me to Adobe.com again. I can't even see an address to email them at. I'm starting to think I'm going to have switch my updating options to "Yes, update whatever you like whenever you like, it's your computer not mine".

And my MN is apparently about an inch away from being expelled from school. That's the 5 year old. Yesterday mum and I had to go pick him up from his school because he was kicking off and messing about so much his teacher couldn't handle him, or have him disrupting the lessons any longer. And I don't always hear a lot about it, but this is an ongoing thing, he's had a special teacher sort of sitting with him and trying to keep him focused for months now. They've mentioned getting him a mental health appointment, but so far neither the school nor my sister have done anything about it. For now we'll have to wait and see what happens on Monday, I guess.

My life is full of moral conundrums right now.

Pacific Rim, discussion of racism, whitewashing )

And my dad has also offered me my grandmother's old mink coat. She died last year, but they're just on the points of selling her house so they're just finishing sorting through her stuff now. I don't agree with fur, obviously, but it's not like I'd be buying a new one and contributing to supply and demand. On the other hand, I do think wearing fur is kind of an advertisement for it. But I also don't like things going to waste when they still do their job, and how many people can say they own an antique mink coat? But if I hate the way the coat was made, why would I like the product? Also, where would I even wear a mink coat? Also, will the coat even fit me? It seemed a little forward to check about that when I hadn't decided if I would morally like to own a mink coat. I will probably not take the mink coat.

Hmm. This is life, I suppose.

Oh, and before I forget again, another logic problem I was left with after seeing Pacific Rim (twice):

Spoilers )

Oh David.

Spoilers for Coronation Street, and mention of suicide )

I went to see Pacific Rim again today, mostly because people were talking about it being considered a flop in America, and when I checked lo and behold, there were only one or two showings a day even now at my local cinema. So I wanted to rewatch it again before there were no showings, or I had to wait months for the DVD. Mostly I noticed all the things people were pointing out in fannish posts, behind the scenes interviews and reviews. Like how much they use orange and blue, especially around Raleigh and Mako. Honestly, it's like "Orange and teal, they do it with zeal: The Movie". Some of it was quite nice though. And you know, complimentary colours, whatever. Also I remembered that I actually really like Mako Mori, and think she is pretty. AND, now I know exactly which Tumblr posts I saw were wrong, lolololol.

Christ. We're flying out on holiday with my nephews in a week. Like, this time next week we'll be on a plane. Friday's trip to Leeds went about as well as could be expected. My mum was obsessed with me getting some cropped trousers, even though the shops refused to provide them, for hours until I pointed out actually I had quite a lot of trousers for holiday-style hot weather, just not England hot weather. But I did get some new trainers, since I've basically worn my other pair out, and some jogging bottoms from New Look I'd been eyeing. In my size and everything, after some wrangling with a checkout woman. Unfortunately, I also bought an umbrella that turned out to be broken when I got it home, so I was hoping to take that back before we went away. But tomorrow I have another appointment with a new mental health service that's picking me up, on Wednesday my mum's having my YN and on Thursday she's having my ON. And then Friday will be our last weekday before we go away. So if I have to actually go back to Leeds and want a day of peace to do it on, they're probably going to be in short supply. They'll probably take it back in my local branch, to be fair.

I've been thinking about nuclear radiation a bit lately. Which may be a bit odd. There was a post I saw on Tumblr saying some pretty horrific things about the Fukushima plant in Japan and it's outcomes, which I have since learned basically came from a regularly debunked 'news' site. So it's just Pretty Bad, not Unimaginably Bad. But between that and playing Fallout 3, a game set in a post-nuclear wasteland, and watching Pacific Rim, which had it's fair share of nuclear plot points, it's sort of got me thinking. It's so weird that it's something we did. Like, at the moment obviously people are really worried about nuclear threats and what would happen if a nuclear-equipped country went to war with anyone. But sometimes I forget that people have actually dropped nuclear bombs. Two on actual inhabited areas. Areas people still inhabit. And so much testing in America, and in the Pacific Ocean itself. And so many accidents that were so horrifying - and yet we still build them, and have nuclear power plants. Everyone's SO worried about it, and yet we have done all that stuff, and continue to do it. I don't know, it boggles my mind sometimes.

Coronation Street:

NICK IS SOME KIND OF GENIUS.

And Steve would obviously get Tracy sent back to jail if he only could, if she only would.

Further notes on Pacific Rim:

  • Stacker Pentecost is an amazing name, but slightly less impressive if you (vaguely) knew a man in real life called Lazarus Baptiste. He was a computer engineer. The computer engineer you would probably want turning up if the world was ending.

  • I get that Mako and Raleigh were the main characters, and the canonical semi-romantic couple. But Mako is a kind of shark, and Raleigh is a kind of bike, so if you say you want Mako/Raleigh you're just saying you want shark-bike in funny language, and I never stop being confused by it.

And in fandom news from the past few weeks:

  • Allie Brosh's book is apparently available in October. I assumed, what with how ill she's been, that she just wouldn't have been working on it, but no, apparently it's coming soon. Which pleases me. I haven't seen anyone else talking about it, so in case you're interested and hadn't heard, there's the link.

  • I'm getting on with the main plot in Fallout 3 again, and you know, the more I think about the storyline, the more annoyed I am about what a wasted opportunity I think Bethesda had. Spoilers for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas )

  • I have been listening to this fanmix, and I want to rec it, because it makes me really happy. so maybe it would make you guys happy too. I didn't even know Electro Swing was a thing, but apparently it is. Also, it's a fanmix for Benny/F!Courier from Fallout: New Vegas, so if you ship that, you may love it doubly hard. NB: I cannot be held accountable if you don't love it.

And I was going to talk about some of the animals my cat has been bringing in as 'presents' lately, but I remembered in my last post I said I wasn't going to make another post about animal death for a while. Suffice it to say, I'm half horrified and half impressed.

And in the last few weeks, I saw three films. Three whole films.

The first two weeks ago was The Internship, which I saw mainly because it had Vince Vaughn in it and he looked like he might not be a dick to people in it. Which I was correct about! Although there were some slightly odd things in the film, overall he and Owen Wilson were both quite nice, and quite nice to other people. It was a slightly odd film - a lot of the scenes sort of felt like they were ad-libbed, and maybe they should have done more ad-libbing until they got something better/funnier. And the ending was basically a big ass-kiss to Google. But overall I enjoyed. And I somehow got a fluff pairing out of it. Mild spoilers )

Unfortunately, Vince Vaughn has turned out to be the latest actor I liked who disappointed me horribly, mainly by having fairly shady politics. It's nothing that would make me want to stop watching him, but apparently he's agreed to make a conservative TV show about his politics. So the night is young!

Speaking of which, I'd forgotten that the next Mark Wahlberg film I was looking forward to also featured Denzel Washington trying to do a comedy role for once, which I wanted to support. I may go see it. For Denzel.

Anyway. Then last week, I went to see Now You See Me and Pacific Rim.

Now You See Me, some spoilers )

Pacific Rim, some probably pretty big spoilers )

I think that's all my fandom news. Also I have started listening to Welcome To Night Vale, but I think I mentioned that in the last post. Also a few other things. But these are the main ones I think.

I'm going to Leeds tomorrow with my mother, because we are going on holiday with my two oldest nephews in less than two weeks. I need some holiday clothes. But I don't know exactly what I need or want. So tomorrow will probably be interesting, to say the least.

Cut for mention of animal death )

Also, I went to see Man Of Steel with dad yesterday. I quite liked it? It was 3D, which I didn't realise before getting there, so I can't tell if the slightly insensible fight choreography was to do with that, or just the way it was actually filmed. Also, I ran out to the bathroom during a bit that didn't seem very dramatic, but might have been a bit of exposition that tied the first and second halves of the film together better than it seemed when I was watching it. I don't know. Brian Holden has taught me to like Superman more than I did. HE CAN'T ALWAYS HELP HOW POWERFUL HE IS. So I quite liked it. It was fucking expensive though. Two adults for a 3D film, including 3D glasses and sweets, since the newsagents downstairs was closed - £33. Jesus Christ.

And now there's Pacific Rim out, and I have been looking forward to Pacific Rim for a few months, but suddenly everyone on Tumblr's seen it, and they're so hyped about it they don't want to spoiler-cut anything FOR A FILM THAT CAME OUT FOUR DAYS AGO. jsjdhj. There are still two other films I want to see out at the moment, one only has two showings a day left this week, and The World's End is out on Friday. Lord save me from people who won't spoiler-cut. Am I just going to have to avoid your Tumblrs entirely?

In other news, apparently sometimes skipping the intros of songs you aren't familiar with on your MP3 player keeps you from songs you will one day genuinely love. This week's offering: Sweet Talkin Woman by ELO. Hold on...

Also, I am at the part in Fallout 3 where you . But this time I told him what a dick I thought he was. It's different this time around, knowing what's going to happen later on in the story. But I do think this version of my Lone Wanderer will end up slightly more well adjusted than the previous one. Or feel horribly guilty for a while. Whichever. He's totally a dick though.
