Sep. 22nd, 2013 07:54 pmConnotations is over, and it's way too late for the 10th anniversary/last con or its book. But I was going through some photos off my old laptop, finally, last night, and I found some from my first Connotations ever, 2003 I believe ETA: No, 2005 clearly, looking at the cake. So for the perusal of anyone interested, here they are:
( Connotations photos )
In current and much less pleasant news, I don't have great faith in the comics industry much of the time. And yet I was still surprised to learn there's a new series coming out soon using the title "Sex Criminals". Which the blurb assures is, will 'put the "sexy" back in "sex crimes"'
Really? Really?
And I'm also sad all over again about Hayley leaving Coronation Street soon, not just because Hayley's great and it's going to be sad, but because I realised she's been in Corrie for 15 years, and she's still the only trans character in British soap as far as I know, barring Hollyoaks. Certainly the only one in the big 3. And even she's not played by a trans actor. 15 years and much critical acclaim later. Which is a bit of a let-down, really, looking back. And soon there probably won't be any, unless they're going to introduce someone new before she leaves. I won't be holding my breath though.

I've been meaning to make this post for a few weeks but, as usual, screencapping took WAY longer than I expected. So now you get it on Boxing Day. But not on Christmas or Christmas Eve. Um. Merry Christmas?
Out of all the terrible pairings I have, this one is probably the worst, and the one I feel the worst about. And I am saying that as someone who adores non-con and dub-con fic. BUT I STILL LOVE IT. So I wanted to post about it.
( Cut for Oz spoilers, many many pictures, and mentions of canonical murder, prison rape, mental health issues and TV racism. Yeah. )
And in case anyone was wondering, the way to go back to the old posting page instead of the new one, is to make your post way, way, way too long.

Jun. 3rd, 2011 11:23 pmI have decided to do a Hollyoaks picspam. I'm genuinely not trying to convert anyone to Hollyoaks, I'm just really enjoying it at the moment and I don't really know anywhere I can go and talk about it. And the events of the past few days are slightly too brilliant to go unremarked upon. And, if there's one thing you can rely on Hollyoaks for, it's generally to be quite pretty. So picspam it is, underneath the cut.

Mar. 26th, 2011 05:56 pmI am slightly achey today, but much less achey than yesterday. Hurrah.
Some things I did last night:
Then today, I don't know if it is Shark Week or Shark Day or something, but the Discovery Channel for full of shark documentaries. I watched Sharks: Are They Hunting Us? (the presenter concluded that no, unless we are acting like injured animals or prey or something they want to investigate (ie bite), they don't care), and Shark After Dark, which I think they mostly made because of the rhyme. It was a WONDERFUL WAY to start the day.
Some things I did last night:
- I found out that Scott Adams, the writer and artist of Dilbert which I used to read as a kid, is a massive dick. ( Spoilers for the article I guess )
- I made tiny weird banner of fannish woe:
For use in similar situations. - I downloaded every track of the Vitamin String Quartet's tribute to Lady Gaga, which with some vouchers my dad gave me from his beer bottles, I only had to pay for one track of.
- I watched the episode of Casualty where Jordan, in the middle of an operation, randomly talking to Toby about the Godfather, and the episode of Casualty where Dr Jordan and Toby seem to eventually be the only doctors left in the ED, and Jordan slowly starts to have some respect and regard for Toby. Oh. ( Rambling about Casualty and Toby/Jordan )
Probably one day I will stop mourning Toby/Jordan and keeping a vigil over all of TV for ever for any sightings of Matthew Needham. Maybe.

So. I have had some excitement over the past few days. Last night my mum and I sat and CLOSELY WATCHED Midsomer Murders for the black character the newspaper assured us was going to be in it, but only briefly. I saw an Asian-looking girl in the background of one of the scenes, and a black horse on the sign of a pub one of the characters went into. No black characters or people with speaking parts though.
Then today - I know my days tend to start a bit later than most other people's, but even so starting it off pretty much by getting up, getting washed, getting dressed, and then getting a call from my nephew's school saying he's ill and needed to be picked up and they couldn't get in touch with his mum or dad, still seemed like a pretty bad way to start the day. My dad was at work and my mum wasn't in. The calendar she both had a day off work, had a late shift, and was getting her hair done at 2pm. I tried calling my sister, and both her house phone and her mobile went straight to a messaging service. I tried calling my mum, and the phone just screeched at me. I tried calling my mum on the house phone, and the phone still just screeched at me. I eventually called my dad, just to see if he knew where my mum was, and he said she had some sort of meeting at the hospital and then an appointment to get her hair done. We decided I'd just need to go get some money, get a taxi, go get my nephew and bring him back here, since I can't get into my sister's house. I called the school back to tell them I'd do that, they had to check if I'd even be able to do that since I wasn't his mother, and while I was on hold my dad called and said he'd called my mum and spoken to her, and she said she'd call Katie and sort it all out. It turns out mum's got a new mobile number, which no-one told me about, or put into any of the house phones.
Anyway, then I had to come off the phone with dad to talk to the school again, who were just saying yes, please come pick him up, to say I'd talked to my dad who'd talked to my mum who was going to talk to my sister and hopefully she'd pick him up. They sounded a bit annoyed, somewhat understandably, and asked me to get someone to call them, then, just to say how long they'd be. I called my dad back again, but he didn't know. I called my mum, a few minutes before she was meant to be having her hair done, and she started shouting at me, and didn't say for definite whether she'd spoken to my sister or not, and when I said the school wanted calling she told me to call them, and then hung up the phone. I didn't understand how she could have spoken to my sister when neither of her phones seemed to be working. So I ended up calling my dad again for advice about whether I should still just get a taxi. He said he'd try calling my sister again and then call me back. Which he did a few minutes later, to say he'd spoken to my sister, and everything was fine, she was going to get him. So everything was okay.
My mum called back a bit later, when she'd had her hair done, to say "Hi..." and apologise. It turned out she'd had a bit of an argument with my sister that morning, when my sister was supposed to meet her at her house at quarter past 1-ish, knowing my mum had an appointment at 2 o'clock and hadn't had any lunch, and still hadn't turned up at quarter to 2. My mum was apparently desperately trying to buy a sandwich and get through the checkouts when my dad and I started calling her about Jack. And she had spoken to my sister, she knew my sister was with a friend, and had called the friend. So it all worked out okay. Hurrah.
Anyway. So then I got to look through my unusually large amount of post: 5 letters. It contained £50 birthday money from my grandma, an appointment with some sort of job group in Pontefract for next week, a letter from the Jobcentre saying they could pay me Employment Support Allowance, a letter from the Jobcentre saying my medical certification was running out and if I didn't send more in it could affect my benefit, and a questionnaire from the Jobcentre as an assessment for Employment Support Allowance. Exciting.
Then I did a bit of tidying in my bedroom, watched Coronation Street, which is UNBELIEVABLE at the moment. ( Spoiler )
And then I watched Monroe, and got practically a whole hour of Matthew Needham, ( Spoilers? Mostly I talk about Matthew Needham )
And now I'm here. I'm going to get my dad to scan some of my documents onto his computer when he comes in from his night out, and do a bit more tidying. And I'm not doing a Pairing Picspam tomorrow, either. It's just too time-consuming. I'm going to put them off until I either don't have much to post again, or I learn how to do them without just telling the story of the film and illustrating it with pictures. Also, I picked Disturbia to do next, and having rewatched it, I'm not convinced it's not just the story of one potential/future psychopath facing off against the neighbourhood psychopath. But anyway, it seems like it will need more time to do. So. No more for a bit.

Pairing picspam - C.R.A.Z.Y.
Feb. 4th, 2011 02:26 pmPairing Picspam!
C.R.A.Z.Y.: Zac/Raymond
I am unusually up before noon today. Which does mean that I have the time to make this post, but I may also lapse into incoherence at some point. I'm very sorry if that happens.
Anyway. I should say that this is an incest pairing, so if you don't like that kind of thing you probably won't be interested. I was going to say that it was probably my favourite brother/brother incest pairing, but that was mostly because I couldn't think of any others I had, and then I remember the King brothers on Emmerdale and things got complicated. But Zac/Raymond is definitely right up there near the top, at the very least.
C.R.A.Z.Y. is a Canadian film, and a Quebecois film, so it's all in French. It's a family drama about a boy who grows up in the 60s and 70s and is pretty clearly probably gay, and how his family cope or fail to cope with that. It's actually quite a sad film in a lot of ways, a lot of it is about how his dad hates him for being gay, or hates that part of him, and he hates himself because of it. But a lot of it's quite funny too, and a lot of it is pretty beautiful. And it's got this storyline about the boy and one of his brothers running through it, which I quite love.
( Zac/Raymond picspam. Big. Also MASSIVELY SPOILERY )
I'm slightly torn over which pairing to do next week. It's either going to be Daniel/Eli from There Will Be Blood or Louise/Jean from Female Agents. It sort of feels like I should get some women in at some point, but Louise/Jean is pretty much my main film femslash pairing, so it might be an idea not to get them out of the way too quickly. And Female Agents is the other main French-speaking film I love, and doing one after the other seems a bit odd. I don't know. I'll have to decide I guess.
I was also thinking about doing a pairing a week for three weeks, and then on each fourth week either just pimping a film I love with no real pairing in it, or without that being the main reason I love it, or posting about a non-film pairing I have. One has pictures, but the other has pairings. Decisions, decisions.

Jan. 28th, 2011 05:00 pmPairing Picspam!
New Town Killers: Alistair/Sean
So. I'm doing a picspam this week. If I do decide to do this regularly for a bit, I'll probably have a tone it down a little next time, because the idea was to try to do one per week so it wouldn't take all of my time, and so far I have spent a week doing one. Other ones probably won't be as focused on just two characters though. Or as based on running.
This will probably be massive. I did pretty admirably well getting it down from 3,917 screencaps (2,000 or so after I got rid of the copies), but even so. And the pictures will probably be huge because I am using Photobucket and I love them. But anyway. This is a pretty fucked up pairing, but I decided to start with that so people are aware of what to probably expect from me. So anyway.

Nov. 22nd, 2010 12:41 amHello. I'm so tired and busy lately. Also we've moved onto the treatment part of the CBT group, which as of last Wednesday is half over, so that's a little bit stressful. But helpful, so far. I had a bit of a wobble last week, which I may talk about later, but I took some time and got through it alright, I think. I am putting some of it down to the fact I went to Leeds last Tuesday, then Wakefield on Wednesday for the CBT group, then slept in and had my nephew on Thursday, then slept in and had my other nephew on Friday. Doing things day after day after day isn't really a good idea for me, I think. But I'm not sure what to do about it, because for the next few weeks I will have the group in Wakefield on Wednesday, my youngest nephew on Thursday, and my oldest nephew on Friday pretty much every week. Oh well.
This week I also did that, then went to the Thought Bubble comic convention in Leeds yesterday. I thought I might just be exhausted today, but I seem to be alright. Basically, the writer and artist of Scary Go Round and Bad Machinery was going to be there, and there's a few things I've been eyeing in his shop and it was a chance to go buy them without paying for postage or messing about with online shops. And was doing a convention exclusive book with all the Bad Machinery strips so far in it (it was my last/only chance!). And I like comics. So off I went. It was quite good actually, I had to get up a bit ridiculously early, but it was easy to find, I think I accidentally waited in line when I didn't have to since I'd pre-booked my tickets, but there were lots of cosplayers there, and lots of stalls. I bought a few little picture things, almost pounced on some Girl Genius books before realising it was 6 and 7, and I don't have 1 yet. Eventually I found John Allison and probably freaked him out a bit with my non-talking style of communication, but I got my books. And I spent a slightly ridiculous amount, but I did get some quite lovely things. And Paul Cornell was there, because apparently there is no escape from him. But it was lovely, and I found out about a few new comics/artists I quite liked. I was all ready to go at about quarter to 2, having been all around the stands and spent as much as I was prepared to. But then I thought as I was there and had a ticket, I may as well go to as much of it as I could, and stuck around for quite a nice little panel about a publishing/comic group called Metaphrog, and then a panel about women in comics. Then I came home, with all my stuff, just in time for Strictly Come Dancing. Yay.
Also I have been thinking about Emmerdale, obviously. There are many things I could say about Emmerdale, but a lot of them don't make any sense and involve Lady Gaga. This week is Nathan Wylde's last week on the screen, he is leaving on Friday, and it's going to be kind of awful before he goes. I LOVE HIM. I DON'T WANT HIM TO LEAVE. I WANT TO VID HIM TO ALL THE LADY GAGA SONGS IN THE WORLD. However, I've fallen kind of in love with some of the soap mags out at the moment. A few weeks ago when Nathan was kidnapped by Cain and being kept tied up and gagged in a barn, someone wrote in to Inside Soap and said it served him right after everything he'd done, and they replied that "We did miss Nathan's usual scathing comments while he was gagged, though...". And then in the latest issue of Soaplife, someone wrote in to say "I think it's a real shame actor Lyndon Ogbourne is leaving Emmerdale. His character Nathan Wylde has been a brilliant baddie and caused so much trouble, plus he's very good looking. Let's hope he'll come back one day to scam Declan and the entire village.", and they made it their star letter and awarded it £25. I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL, SOAPLIFE. Also, according to Lyndon Ogbourne Nathan is 24. What? That's not what it says on the Wikipedia page. But if so, OH MY GOD. NATHAN.
In other news, from last week's Emmerdale episodes:

Nov. 8th, 2010 02:38 amA few weeks ago, I went on the internet and scoured it for every picture of Nathan Wylde I could find. It was one of the best things I have ever done. So guess what you get now? That's right.

There are 4 cinemas in my town, that I know of. The biggest one, Cineworld, had an exclusive preview screening of Batman: The Dark Knight tonight, unlike any other in town. They were also charging £12.50 for this screening (with a free poster!), which I wasn't entirely down with. When I decided today that I wanted to see it anyway, it turned out they'd sold out of all but the front row, which means you have to crane your neck to an unfortunate angle apparently. So I'm going to see one of the previews tomorrow.
Thusly, just in case I am obsessed with it, I wanted to do this now. That's right, Luke Rattigan picspam. You've been warned.

Possibly coming up: It's A Tautology Damnit!, Part 2!
ETA: The pictures are bizarrely small in the post. That will teach me to do it the quick 'Insert Image' way. Anyway, if you're interested, you can click on the pictures to go to the bigger, prettier versions. x

I've not been posting much because things have mostly been a mess of scheduling and attempting to plan. That Eden Project holiday in June is full up, so I was looking at how much/if I could sort something out myself. The cheapest way apparently involves spending 9 hours on a coach before and after the weekend. And I get a free walk with the wolves at the UK Wolf Conservation Trust thing I joined, which I wouldn't mind doing this summer, possibly with a guest if anyone I know is interested. And it turns out there's a Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, where there are also Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and I have a vague urge to pretend I'm underwater, so I wouldn't mind going there at some point. But my funds are running low again, so I might have to put all of that on hold for a while anyway.
In other news; My new bible. It's nice what turns up when you search for "Farscape Crichton Scorpius slash". Especially since Crichton/Scorpius slash doesn't tend to turn up.

You remember a few weeks ago I was rambling on about Lucas Buck and Michael Bluth being Dodgeball commentators together? Well now you don't even have to watch the movie. How kind am I?

Proof for the win, yo
Jan. 9th, 2007 11:32 pmI've been wanting to make this post for a while. Because it's near-canonical proof of mpreg.
( All in a little film called Giant... )
In conclusion: someone write me James Dean mpreg.

Green Wing Special extras
Jan. 6th, 2007 08:43 pmThe Green Wing special DVD came this morning. 11 hours later my nephew has gone home and I can post about it.
( Spoilers for the extras and the special, some in the form of picspam )
So that's the end of Green Wing. Except for the possible spin-off. And my continuing, endless love of the slash.

Dec. 7th, 2006 11:02 pmAmerican Gothic is just the gayest thing ever. Rewatching the DVDs really only proves this to me. Matt/Lucas may or may not actually be canon.

( Cut for some, um, porn )
I don't know what all of them are...or why I appear to be interested in them...but you can rest assured, they're the pictures I definitely liked best. Out of the ten.
