Jul. 27th, 2019 11:25 pmThings that genuinely make me happy at the moment:
- Steve Harrington
- Billy Hargrove (I don't care)
- Steve Harrington/Billy Hargrove fic
- It's really difficult that they have practically the same last name, and then Steve also had a friend called Tommy H. I assume his last name was also Harrington, and they just had to figure something out because it was too much.
- Video games, but I probably like them too much at the moment. Stopping Civ 6 to take a break to play Yoshi on the Nintendo Switch, then stopping that to try out the Oninaki demo, maybe isn't the best way to spend my last week off sick. Or maybe it is! I don't know. All I know is, in games you can win or you can lose, but the stakes aren't quite as high as they are when trying to deal with your real life.
- When adverts do the one good thing they do and remind of you of a really good song you'd almost forgotten, or never listened to properly before:
- This company makes cool, unusual and delicious brownies. For a long time I was wishing they would do a Turkish delight brownie, and this month they did! The brownies weren't quite as good as you'd hope, until you got to an actual lump of Turkish delight, but still. Wish fulfilled.
- Pictures of the Isle of Skye.
- A wolf documentary that makes me genuinely emotional.

Feb. 1st, 2012 06:22 pmHello. I have been planning and trying to make a post for a few days now. But usually by the time I am finished with my computer games every day, and then my flist and email and trying to make my way through my Tumblr dashboard I am exhausted or it is the middle of the night. I need get rid of some Tumblrs from my dashboard I think.
But I am making it now, largely because of the film The Grey that's out at the moment, and all the bad things I keep hearing about it. Essentially, apart from it being based around a negative and apparently unrealistic portrayal of wolves - a pet peeve of mine - there's also apparently evidence of animal cruelty on the set. And now, from
metaquotes, it seems like one of the actors is kind of a dick: "I’ve made a lot of movies that had both men and women in them, a lot of movies that were dominated by the woman’s storyline. And in this case it was a very different experience making the movie and enjoying the movie, when it was completed, because of the fact that there are no women in it… It was like thank God, I get to do a movie with just guys.”. Dermot Mulroney's view of film-making, that is. And for some reason I have decided to blame Liam Neeson for all of this as well. Just because his face is on all the posters. FUCK YOU LIAM NEESON.
Also, I mostly wanted to post about the most beautiful response to the 'No Homo' phrase I've probably ever seen. I think 'No Hobo' is probably my favourite. I apologise for any ads you may see before that video. I can't really believe Youtube nowadays.
And also, in a sort of similar note to what Dermot Mulroney said - but completely the opposite - I've not been going to see many films lately, but there are a few I am or was sort of looking forward to. One of them was Chronicle, which is apparently about a bunch of teenagers getting superpowers, and then it all getting a bit thrillery. Except that I then looked it up, and it turns out it's about three teenagers, all of whom are male. I don't, it was just the sort of film I felt like I'd want to see a female character in, and it sounded like - with a group of teenagers - and in this day and age - one of the people getting superpowers might be female. But apparently not. And then, I went through it again yesterday, when I randomly saw a billboard poster for a show called The Almighty Johnsons with the tagline 'Meet the gods next door' - only to later pass it again and see that it's all about 'Axl', who just become a god, 'just like all his brothers'. Again, it was a show it seemed like there might be a female character in. And I assume that if they are a family, they probably have a mother (maybe?). But it doesn't seem like female presence is going to be a huge part or point of the show. In a way I kind of understand the film one more, because it sounds like it's going to be about a fairly close, small group of friends getting superpowers and then tearing each other apart, and I think it's fair to say that generally people tend to have friends, especially as teenagers, that are the same sex as they are. It's still annoying, but you know. But the TV show one I understand a lot less, surely it's pretty straightforward to just have a woman in a family? Maybe it's just weird advertising. And I don't know, maybe both these things will have amazing secondary female characters in them, AMAZING secondary female characters, the kind that blow people's minds. Maybe most of the male characters get killed off by the middle part of the story, and it's up to the secondary female characters to step up and save the day. They're not allowing those women to be in the promo shots or trailers though. It's just annoying really, because those types of story are exactly the type of thing I would be interested in. And I am still am kind of interested in them. Just slightly less excited now. And you know, it's not actually bad to have women in your films and shows. Just saying.
Anyway. Most of my links on this page are off Tumblr. Please do not judge me.
Also, I still love Skyrim. Also, it turns out the character I am playing in Saints Row 2 is an actual psychopath. But she has a lieutenant who is attention-seeking. Which is quite lovely. The psychopath thing is a bit disturbing though.

Feb. 3rd, 2010 10:01 pmHello. It's me. A few weeks ago I decided, since my computer didn't seem to be having the disk space issues it had been doing and I had a new external hard drive to clear space with anyway, to see if I could install an old game of mine, Morrowind, again. It turned out that I could, aside from some problems with the computer not recognising the game disk some of the time. But anyway, I've mostly been playing that rather than posting for the past few weeks. God I love Morrowind. I'm not exactly a big gamer, but it's probably my favourite game I ever had. And one of my favourite fantasy stories ever. But anyway.
I have been doing stuff though. I went to see the Snow Queen in London a few weeks ago, and stayed the weekend with
cakesy. ( The Snow Queen, and staying with cakesy )
I also had two interviews. ( The interviews )
( The flat things )
Anyway. In other news:
Another thing I've been thinking - while I do feel like any money I get from now on should really at least partly go towards paying back what I've borrowed from my savings to pay for my rent and stuff lately - on the other hand, when I get the £200-ish deposit back from my flat (assuming I do move out at the end of February and they don't feel the need to buy new furnishing with it or keep it for some reason), it would probably pay pretty much for me to go to Eastercon. Assuming there are still places and I can find someone to share with. Hmm. It's a thought, anyway.

Anyway. In other news:
- While I was at my parents' I picked up a belated Christmas present that wasn't delivered in time in December, the Wolf Almanac. And promptly spent most of my time at my parents' reading about wolves. I would be tormenting you all with Wolf Facts and discussing Erroneous Assumptions About Wolves somewhat endlessly, but I'm mostly a better friend than that.
- I saw a part of an episode of Veronica Mars while I was at my parents', and am currently going through one of my regular bouts of rage about the lack of Aaron/Logan on the internet. Dudes. It was incestuous, abusive, AND Aaron was a ( Spoiler for season 1 ). How could it not have taken off??
- I saw a beautiful hat in the sale in Accessorise last week, on the very day that I really properly did not have enough money to buy it with. It was a black trilby with two of those scrunched-up felt flowers attached to the side, a pink one and a grey one. It was beautiful, sort of Gangster-Feminine, but the next day, when I had slightly more money, it had gone. At the moment I'm vaguely planning to make one. If I can find the right bits in a haberdasher's.

My weekend. Featuring - wolves.
Nov. 17th, 2008 10:01 pmAnyway. I had a great weekend. I got the train to London about 12-ish on Friday, and K was going to meet me, but her temp agency called at the last minute, and she had work, so I went back to my back-up plan: wandering around the British Museum. Which I love. I went to the Timepieces room, and saw the lovely clockwork, and almost broke an exhibit with my head, but managed to stop myself. I went to a lovely little room where they had sort of medieval pottery and pendants, and was told by the guard to turn my MP3 player off, because he could hear it across the room. Which I didn't think anyone could since I got it. But there you go. They still have the lovely Rosetta Stone wall plaque, even if I can't afford it. And I'd just wandered into a lovely big room and was reading about conchology, when K called and I set off back to hers.
Then the next day, we went on a walk with wolves. ( Walking with wolves )
( Pictures, probably quite big )
And then on Sunday, I came back into London, and met up with Cee, and she took me to a Cuban restaurant and bought me lunch. I took about three hours to eat mine, and that's not really that at much of an exaggeration. It was both difficult to chew, and delicious. And Cee was lovely. I almost had a Cuba Libre, but decided against it. And then I hard to dash, and probably wouldn't have if Cee hadn't sort of said I should, and it's a good thing she did because I ended up getting my train with about 4 minutes to spare. And then I came back. It was a great weekend. GREAT.

So far this week I have managed to:
I have also been boggling and flailing a little bit because Jobseeker's have not actually paid me any money yet, and I'm going in to sign off tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get some at some point. And also I've noticed that no-one on the internet likes Toby/Nick Jordan quite as much as I do. I’ll admit they're not exactly an obvious pairing quite yet. It's being a bit more of a slow burn than I was hoping for. But if anyone could write fic ever, somewhere that Google could find it, that would be quite nice. At the moment, I want all the cliches ever. The one where Dr Jordan meets up with Toby in a bar after work and tries to seduce information about another doctor out of him. The one where Toby and Nick are the only ones available on a shift, and they do a tricky operation together and Toby copes because he has to, and Nick has sudden newfound respect for him. The one where they're on call together and doing a tricky operation and Nick hesitates, and Toby copes because he has to, and then afterwards when Nick's drunk and self-hating in his office and asks if everything's alright. The one where Nick fucks Toby because Toby's like the part of himself that hesitates, and he just sort of has to. The one where they get sent to a conference together for some reason, and the hotel's fully booked so they have to share a room, and they occasionally catch each other coming out of the shower, and Toby looks embarrassed and Nick is amused. The one where for some reason they all have to learn to dance, and Toby's actually really good, and Nick decides if he's that good he can dance with him a bit, and Toby is a bit terrified, but also not, because his dance teacher is the actual expert, and she thinks Toby's great. All the ones. I love Toby. His mother is Cherie Lunghi, it turns out. I may start supporting her a bit more in the dancing.
Wolf Walk! Eee!
- Go shopping.
- Get to the meet and greet for the job I'm starting next week.
- Get to my film course.

I hate that there are adverts in bus shelters now.

I've not been posting much because things have mostly been a mess of scheduling and attempting to plan. That Eden Project holiday in June is full up, so I was looking at how much/if I could sort something out myself. The cheapest way apparently involves spending 9 hours on a coach before and after the weekend. And I get a free walk with the wolves at the UK Wolf Conservation Trust thing I joined, which I wouldn't mind doing this summer, possibly with a guest if anyone I know is interested. And it turns out there's a Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, where there are also Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and I have a vague urge to pretend I'm underwater, so I wouldn't mind going there at some point. But my funds are running low again, so I might have to put all of that on hold for a while anyway.
In other news; My new bible. It's nice what turns up when you search for "Farscape Crichton Scorpius slash". Especially since Crichton/Scorpius slash doesn't tend to turn up.

Also on TV tonight, I learned that there are still a few thousand wolves living in Europe, in the Carpathian mountains. Who knew?
