Due to the demands of [livejournal.com profile] aegflota, I have found the piece I did for my student radio on the pike in Nottingham University lake. I am posting it here, in a more LJ suitable format, for GENERAL PUBLIC INFORMATION. This is what pikes are like, my friends.

I apparently called this piece 'The possible pike of Nottingham' )

I am going downstairs now to see if there are any episodes of South Park on while my hair dries. I LOVE Kyle Broflovski. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.

No-one wants to write David/Gary slash for Coronation Street. A quick search on Google has sort of confirmed this. Although given the fact that there's now a court case in the air, and they're playing it as an actual love triangle sort of thing rather than Gary being a twat at David's girlfriend and David being jealous, it's not entirely a surprise. The people on the forums only seem to want to talk about which one is the least attractive and the most horrible. It's quite rub. Probably the show is just building to it, and I should be patient. They can't bring the Ultimate Teenage Criminal Team together straight away. But, dudes. This is the episode where Gary stalked him, with all the rubbish/irrelevant bits taken out. THE GAY IS VERY CLEAR. Probably a fandom will leap into being in the next week or so. Probably.

My secret pairing of Tony/Maria is apparently on the cards though, according to the soap magazine covers. So it's not all bad, I guess.

I’ve been a bit rubbish at LJ in the past week. This was basically my week:

Monday: I got to work and the heating was broken. Apparently if the temperature is 15 degrees Celsius it's illegal conditions. It was 16 degrees all day. They said something about getting some heaters in, but the man meant to be scouting out the place to see where to put them never arrived. Thankfully, they started working very weakly at about 3 or 4 o'clock. The next day it was back on properly and we got to work with our coats off.

Tuesday: Work without having to wear our coats, as I've said. And in the evening I went to the cinema, and had a whole screen all to myself for The Secret of Moonacre. Which I thought, coupled with the adverts, would be related to its quality, but it was actually quite good. It had Dakota Fanning, being a better Dakota Fanning than she was a Lyra Belacqua, in my opinion. It also had Hornblower/Ioan Griffiths in it. And Tim Curry. It wasn't brilliant - although the costumes very often were - but if you want a good, gentle fantasy film, I'd recommend it.

Wednesday: Things probably happened, but I can't remember what they were. I think I had to wash my hair, so not much. Possibly looking up a bunch of videos on Youtube, as I recall.

Thursday: It snowed, starting just before I left the office to go home, as I'm sure it did in many other places. They were doing Light Night taster events, so I saw a light show near the castle as I was coming back. I went to the train station, in snow, to get my train tickets for Redemption, abut was told they would be about the same price on the day, so there was no point booking a time. Then I went and had cake, because I quite like having cake in a cafe/cake shop when it's dark and snowing outside. And I've been in there before, but Lee Rosy's Tea seems to be leading the way in ambiently-lit cake and indie music shops in Nottingham. It was lovely, anyway.

But by this time it was about half past 6, I remembered I'd forgotten to do my little letter to go with my Jobseeker's book explaining that I was now in work and couldn't be bothered standing around on the street doing it, so just went for the bus. I went to the bus stop where the cheap buses go first, and there was one in, but it was out of service. They're usually pretty regular there, but I waited about ten minutes in the cold, and nothing came. The fact that a Light Night woman came around handing out glow sticks because she wanted to go home made it only slightly better. As I was stood three of the more expensive buses I could get went past, so I started walking down to that stop. And then the cheaper bus came. I ran back up, queued, and just as I was pretty much about to get on the driver said the bus was full and no-one else could get on. I walked down to the other bus stop again. I got there about 5 to 7. I was 7:30 by the time a bus came. And I'd been standing there with wet feet inside my boots. I could have walked home more quickly, but I thought it might be slippy on the pavements because of the snow. There wasn't that much snow though. The buses could possibly have bucked up, in my opinion.

Friday: Was the last day of the week, and the first day I'd been paid since December. And it was Light Night. And frankly, I think in the matter of festivals that are completely made up, I think Nottingham sort of wins. There was definitely a lot more stuff on than last year. The first bit was slightly spoiled by a man sat near me shouting a bunch of racist stuff to do with St George's Day, but eventually I moved away. There was the big wheel, as usual. Also a robot roaming the streets, people on stilts, jugglers doing David-Bowie-in-Labyrinth tricks with glass balls, roaming story tellers. The castle grounds were open for free and all lit up, they had a hot air balloon they kept lighting so it lit up, and a dragon made of LED lights mounted to a bicycle roaming round the place. And then there was a Nottingham goddess parade through the streets, with an accompaniment of young rhythm dancers who did a performance in the open space by Marks and Spencer’s. It was pretty great, even if I did look for where people were getting glow sticks from all night and never found out. I found one in the street on the way back home, though. That was fair enough. And it was good. I got home, shivered while waiting for the heating to come on, and watched NCIS.

Today Adam and Joe were on doing their Valentine's Day show, and Adam was quite lovely towards his wife Sarah. I didn’t know his wife was called Sarah. His love CAME WITH A MESSAGE THOUGH. He and Joe didn't declare their love to each other, but probably they do that off the air. And then I wandered around town trying to get stuff done before Redemption. Massive queues in Thornton’s and various places. Valentine's Day. It gets all over the place.

Casualty without Toby is not as good as Casualty with Toby. It's a huge shame.

I love Tony Gordon. His crazy is brilliant. His eyes are beautiful. Oh. I hope Carla and Maria just sort of get over it, and they all move in together, and bring the baby up. Hurrah.

Snow. We had some. On the first day of the year I went to work. On the first week of the year I had to work. It was sort of lovely, actually, I was down near the castle, and on Monday when I peeked out from under my hood, I got to see the castle and the cliffs and everything all covered in snow. Let me tell you, there is no cave like a cave near snow. The two things don't even compare. Yesterday, however, they kept talking about closing the office because of the weather, after some or all of the bus services were cancelled (the city ones reopened, if they were ever cancelled). The words 'at any minute' were used at about quarter past eleven. We finally went home early at about 4 o'clock. Growl.

Other things - the people who made Samorost are making a full-length game called Machinarium. It's meant to be in shops some time in the first half of the year. Mostly it made me rediscover Samorost. And discover the game they did for a band, Polyphonic Spree. And the game they created for BBC Bitesize. Mostly, I'm really in the mood to play a full-length game like that at the moment. Really very much in the mood.

The Good, The Bad, The Weird is apparently not being released anywhere near me. I don't entirely understand why.

And...and and and. It might snow again tomorrow. But someone said it was going to snow today worse than yesterday, so who knows. I have bought soup in any case. I need to do some clothes washing, so I hope it's not too bad. Also to go to the bank. On the other hand, it would be nice for it to snow on a day where I don't actually have to go outside. So. We'll wait and see, I guess.

Adam and Joe are back tomorrow, I think. Hurrah.
girlofprey: (Default)
So. While I've been out of work, I've been getting up pretty late. Waking up late, and then lying in for a bit. But waking up when it's getting dark, that's a new one.

It's pretty much my own fault though, I think. I had a few goals yesterday, and one was to get up in time to listen to the Adam and Joe show in my flat without having to turn on my computer for the first time, on my shiny new digital radio. Which I did, despite not going to bed, again, until about half past 3 in the morning. After a similar night on Thursday of staying up but still getting up earlier than usual. And not going to bed early last night. Yep.

Yesterday was pretty good though, actually. I did indeed get up in time for the Adam and Joe show. I got three packages in the mail, which my neighbour brought in and knocked on the door to give me, because one was a bit ripped. And they were You Don't Mess With The Zohan, the Fleet Foxes EP, and C.R.A.Z.Y. Which was nice. The envelope that was a bit ripped turned out to be my new bank card. That's only sad because I remember when I used to look at the expiry date on my old card and think "Oh, that's years away!". But oh well. The new one is the same colour as my Eden Project membership card though. That might cause some confusion.

My other goal was to go into town for the first time that week, and to get back before the gales hit. Which I did, although not so much through being early as through the gale not really appearing. It started to rain a bit last night, about 8-ish. I was promised a gale. I pictured being in my flat with food and the heating turned up while the windows rattled. Knowing me, it'll probably hit tomorrow or something, when I actually need to go shopping.

And I stopped into Evolution in town, where they were having a sale, and I got two lovely little jewellery holders that were reduced to £1. It turns out they have lids that come off and smack against the floor very easily, but they're just a bit wobbly now, and haven't actually broken. And I managed to get The Independent, and the free Frost-Nixon interview dvd, which I might not watch until after seeing the film. It was brilliant. Except for the lack of a gale.

In fannish news, I'm not massively a fan of Eastenders except for how STACEY IS AMAZING, but I'm sort of fascinated by how long they're dragging out the Ronnie-Danielle long-lost-daughter storyline. I think Ronnie could now reasonably sing the Johanna song from Sweeney Todd, if she wanted to. There are people who think it's going to go on till March, around Mother's Day. Blimey.

Meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] whatho. Once you have been tagged, you have to write an entry with 10 random things, facts, goals, or habits about yourself. At the end, choose 10 people to be tagged. You can't tag a person who has tagged you. Except I also won't be tagging anyone.

10 Random Things About Me )

I have an InsaneJournal now, in case of impending Livejournal disasters. I'm under the same name, if anyone wants to friend me, and I’ll be cross-posting, probably more often when I get the html figured out. I came to realise how vaguely pointless it was to have a back-up GreatestJournal and never update it. Or actually sign in to it. Oh well. I'd like to second [livejournal.com profile] whatho's question, though, what is all this about Inksome? Is it better than other journal sites?

As an aside, I was listening to Adam and Joe from Saturday on Listen Again at the site. Is it just me or has Joe been getting progressively more in love with Adam since the summer? Possibly earlier, as I only started listening to it then. I think it KILLED HIM A BIT that Adam was attracted to a man and it wasn't him. Dude.

Hmm. Tired. Film festival thing went less well than I might have hoped - when I got to the front desk and said my name and that I would be on the guest list, they told there was no guest list - ! Then they asked me who I talked to to arrange it - I talked to the girl who runs our show, Uncovered, who talked to the press officer, who talked to whoever arranged it properly. But the cinema marketing manager gave me a couple of free tickets to some shows anyway, and her e-mail, asking me to send her whatever I did on the festival, which I think will be nothing now because it's finished and we like to cover things people can actually still go see. Sigh.

Also we had organised an interview with the festival president, which he was thankfully aware of - but when I rang up at the agreed time (10 o'clock-ish), he was in his hotel room! Which was just around the corner apparently. He asked me if I wanted to come to his hotel/room to do it - no - or for him to come back to the cinema - not for a 2 minute interview, no - so that was a big flop. We rescheduled it for the next day, but too late to put it in the show so I ended up cancelling. And then I woke up seriously ill with 'The Curse' (which has earned its name, let me tell you), so I couldn't even nip down to the studios to just do a 'I went to Resfest, and it was...' piece. Double sigh.

On the plus side, I appear to be completely free for next weekend though, for once. I am contemplating going home. I'd like to take my laptop back and do some stuff on the internet, but it might be awkward on a coach/train. Hmm. It might be nice to see the family/Jack though. And...have things bought for me rather than having to buy them.

Am still in a bit of a Goblet of Fire daze. To the point where I COULD NOT SLEEP until about 2 o'clock this morning because ideas and such were whizzing around my head. Mentions of characters names and such. )And maybe some other stuff )

I really can't wait for the GoF DVD. 3 DAYS after the opening weekend. I got it bad.

Also, I had a bit of an icon clearout. See the pretty shiny new ones! Some of them had uploading problems, and one inexplicably turned into Mischa Barton, but they seem to be mostly alright. Now.
girlofprey: (ASOUE One Man (and his Dog))
Midnight showing of Harry Potter tonight. Plan to get more sleep than usual last night completely failed due to having presentation to plan, mother calling as usual, and making comments that led to bad dreams about Katie and Jack. Also Faith and Buffy were there in mime make-up. And Draco was incorporeal and freaking out about it. Hmm. But thinking 'have to sleep' tends to make me not sleep anyway, so probably can't blame mum too much.

I and my fellow HP-goers decided that rather than get a bus at 11 o'clock at night on my own, I should get a bus at 8/9 o'clock - when it's still going to be dark - and hang out at one of their houses, which is on the other side of a scary, scary bridge. Hm.

Am still slightly worrying about getting a taxi back all the way to Beeston, on my own, at 4 o'clock in the morning, but don't really have much of an option at this point. Unless I somehow cunningly secrete myself in the cinema, and get a very early bus back. Hmm.

Presentation is in 3 and a half hours. But as far as I can tell it's not going to be that much different from what I normally do in seminars, only slightly more coherent and all at once. I have vague notes scribbled on a piece of paper. I trust them to carry me through. Our tutor usually leaves the presentations until the end of the seminar, anyway - as in literally 'we have one minute left, do you have anything to say anyone else hasn't already said?'. So am not too worried. And then am free for the week - until Friday. When I have to review a local film festival, and the boy who suggested it/pushed for it has dropped out. I fear for my brain this weekend. Also I might not get anywhere near a computer.

Chips are nice.

Being handed them in a box and not offered ketchup, less so.

Hmph.
girlofprey: (Anton Know Thyself)
I have signed up for far too many things at the radio again.

One of these is a midnight showing of Harry Potter next Thursday, if we can get tickets.

I'm actually quite looking forward to this though. It is probably going to be a group outing, and we will be recording it on minidisc and interviewing all the other non-reviewy people who turned out to watch Harry Potter at midnight. I have never been to a midnight showing before. And even though I spent the last Harry Potter film experience sitting thinking '...is this it?', this one looks quite good. In the adverts at least. Still feeling no shame that I haven't read any of the books but the latest one. Nope.

Another thing I agreed to do is a review of film I have not seen yet for tomorrow. When I really ought to be reading more Ovid.

::is sad no-one supports my idea for a Metamorphoses-based all-girl crime-fighting posse. Sadface fullstop::

And I still love Nathan Barley, and none of you can stop me, hah! Though words are sadly not forthcoming.

In other news: my parents gave me money. Apparently I 'ground them down', in that I 'took advantage of their much-professed offer to give me all the money I needed'. But I have vague money. Yay.

Christmas is coming. Omg.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
I just walked for half an hour in the rain to come onto campus for no other reason than because I knew if I didn't, and didn't check my e-mail, over the weekend, the build-up of flist would quietly slay me come Monday. My shoe is wet on the inside. Woe.

Wanadoo still being bastards and haven't replied to my flatmate's angry letter about cancelling over contract. Apparently their promised two weeks are up on Monday. Whereupon we will call them. Not that that has ever done any good before.

I discovered my reading for this weekend is slightly less horrendous than I'd thought. In that I don't have to do a presentation on it, so I can probably leave a few hundred pages of Ovid on one side, until the NEXT seminar on him. Joy.

Also perhaps forgot to mention that apparently BBC Radio Nottingham wants to host the University Radio Nottingham show I work on, Uncovered. Which means they will have pictures of us on a website, and little links so people can listen back to the pieces we've done. Which is fairly yay :D

As far as I can tell I will not be interviewing the League of Gentlemen at any point this week. Which is slightly relieving. I do not think 'dissolving' would an interview technique likely to impress them.

Yes.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
  • Rachael in pain from that whole being-a-woman thing. Ouch >:|

  • Rachael has had a Spira, so is slightly appeased.

  • Rachael has about 150 pages of a book to read by tomorrow, and 100 things to do before she can even go home to where the book is, oh no.

  • However, it's all about sex and incest and sorcery in an abbey, so again slightly appeased.

  • In fact, it seems to be Incest Week for my whole reading list at the moment.

  • Rachael watched Lost last night, the one where Charlie nearly dies. But the important part is that Sawyer kept Sayid's signal fire burning! Omg the love!!

  • Rachael has been reading all or most of the weekend.

  • Post-Final Battle Night Watch bunnies where Anton is Zavulon's 'spoils of war' did not help this.

  • I cannot remember Anton's face for more than five seconds at a time for some reason! Woe.

  • Really quite worryingly obsessed with Night Watch, as recent post will attest.

  • But everyone else is obsessed with snooker, so never mind.

  • Rachael really ought to be doing a What's On guide for her radio so she can go home. Ah well.

  • Bullet points perhaps the best way to update journals ever.

And, randomly, some Night Watch pairing summaries, for your viewing pleasure:

Anton/Kostya - Like Romeo and Juliet. Only drunker!
Olga/Tiger - The owl and the pussycat
Anton/Zavulon - Yegor has two daddies!

ETA:In honour of Family Guy's return to our screen in less than a week (ee!), I would also like to present you with perhaps their best quote ever; 'Three days? That's tomorrow!' :D

And some random movie site is announcing the UK/USA release dates of Day Watch as 2005TBA - which is very odd, since it's not meant to be being released in Russia until 00:01 January 1st 2006. I just don't know what to believe anymore! However, there will be a game to keep us all occupied till them. Although unless you get to roleplay sleeping with Anton, possibly I'll leave my money where it is.

In radio studios. I take my internet where I can. Just finished doing an interview with the owner of the comic book shop in Nottingham - after cocking up a minidisc interview at his shop, and then, whoops!, forgetting to turn the microphones on today, finally managed to get it done :). Will edit over Easter. When I should be doing essays. Yes. He was awfully nice about my ineptitude, and called me 'sweetheart' at the end - am slowly building up a network of funky independent shops in Nottingham. Excellent. Practise, I feel, for ingratiating myself with the rebel forces that will one day help me take over the world. Yes.

Hee. SFX so great. Stephen Fry says being asked to be the voice of the Guide in the upcoming film is 'like having your birthday on Christmas Day, discovering a winning lottery ticket in your stocking and having chocolate poured all over you'. Stephen Fry so great ::loves::. I am not sure about the Arthur- and Ford-ness of the people playing Arthur and Ford, but - pretty. And have 'chemistry', apparently. Huzzah.

And mention of Sea of Souls! Pictures! I didn't just dream it in a beautiful beautiful dream! Oh, come out soon DVDs. You think I care that one half of my OTP is dead? I want to write strange, ethereal Craig/Wade death!slash now, incorporating a bit of Scottish Celtic mythology. This is distracting. Hm.

Going to see Constantine tonight. with a boy :0. Not my idea. All his. I hope it is not the sign of something awkard and unfortunate to come, as I have to work with him on the radio. Best plan is to be optimistic and wilfully oblivious to anything that may or may not happen, I think. Oo, and Ghostbusters tomorrow with my lady-housemate! On the big screen! Can you feel the 'yay!'?
girlofprey: (Default)
Aha! strikethrough tag is fixed!! Except yes. Jekesta is still my fairy godmother, but one who challenged me to figure things out for myself, so even better yes :).Rich text editor was holding me back, like an octopus, omg.

I am in the university radio studio, doing a review of 'The Chorus' which all should go see omg, and checking my e-mail, and someone just called on the phone and expected me to know things omg. Leaving soon, I think, yes.

Enjoyed my dance thing last night! It was indeed two men dancing each other! It was set in a gay club, and one was all shy and nervous and newbie-like (but only LIKE....), and another was all confident and slightly scary and trying to seduce him, and there was touching and groping, and 'shy' one got all happy on ectasy, which I don't particularly think is good, but was pretty. But then the sad ending )

Going to see a wax forest now, omg, arty.

It's like the end of a horror movie, when the thoroughly killed bad guy gets back up for one last scare. Just got them, and had to discuss them with my very nice, but still 'strange' in the 'stranger' sense, personal tutor. moping about/rejoicing in my results )

Have to go into town now and attempt to buy myself some half-decent new clothes, and possibly get a new A string for my violin. What with cheques going in and out though, I'm not entirely sure how much money I have, which should make things quite interesting. Also have to write a review of Meet the Fockers before tomorrow morning, which I'm completely not in the headspace for yet. I don't even know what I'm going to say. It was funny, but not as good as the first one. I'll whack 400 words out somehow.

On the subject of Meet the Fockers, Greg/Jack continues to be OTP liek whoa, to borrow (steal) a phrase (strikethrough key, where are you?). For God's sake, Jack proposed to him in the first one! And watched him sleep. Pam is just so completely pointless, except as a way to bring them together. Hmm. Spoilers )

Blah. Got a long weekend of reading ahead of me. Gulliver's Travels, The Miller/Reeve's Tale, gender theory and a Midsummer Night's Dream, oh my. But first my greatest trick, shopping without money.

girlofprey: (Default)

Sea of Souls )

Finished Richard III - am I the only one who feels sorry for the intelligent, deformed bastard? And how did he fight so well in battles if he was all crooked and shrivelled and whatnot? Perhaps something to bring up in a seminar. And started on 'Cloud 9', which is equally realistic and random-crazy, but has some fantastic lines that will weave their way into my conversations shortly, I feel. 'Shall we go in a barn and fuck?', 'boys have no business having feelings', and 'you know what I'd do if you were shot with poison arrows? I'd fuck your dead body and poison myself'. Genius.

Radio meeting tonight, and gaaaah, I have to do an Uncovered for Thursday (tiny radio bit about what's on that evening in Nottingham), which is annoying, if not all that taxing. Wanted to go see Closer and perhaps Team America again this week, but what with going home on Thursday it doesn't look like that'll be too likely. Will get to see Jack though, so it's all good. In other news, successfully converted all of my housemates to Eastenders-obsession with my history-of-plotline-relating ways - huzzah! And, yay, the our shower's getting fixed today! No more showers that are freezing at sporadic intervals! Double-huzzah!

girlofprey: (Default)

Jesus Christ it is cold today! And I had to get up at 7:30 and WALK in it for about 45 minutes! I almost froze. I predict a long, long lie-in tomorrow, and if that's not warm enough, self-immolation.

Went to my first ever film festival/conference-type thing though (bounces). Not all of it, or even most of it, but I was there! Hence the early morning(s). It was great. I had an I.D. badge and everything. And free 'refreshments' to take in (the one time in my life I wished I liked popcorn). The free lunches were not so fabulous, sadly. Posh enough, but it turns out I don't like vennison, and little indian-style sausage rolls. Saw some of the best films I've seen in my life though, which I guess we're not meant to advertise, but...

Ah well... )

As for the rest of my weekend, it's pretty much all reading. Richard III, Nieztche, Foucalte and Caryl Churchill's 'Cloud 9' by Wednesday. And there's Sea of Souls at 9 o'clock of course, with Craig facing childhood demons and facing off against a possible fraud 'healer' - slashy brain, don't fail me now!

girlofprey: (Default)
No essay. Tutor apparently hasn't quite finished marking them yet, so I'll be awaiting an e-mail from the uni English secretary at some point in the week, so I can go pick it up from her then. Growl. Also, managed to trip UP the stairs in front of many people (I blame the leaflet distributors looming at the top), and have misplaced my umbrella. Which I broke a bit today anyway. Could not find a groundskeeper to interview for a radio piece today and can't take the minidisc recorder home tonight to interview my housemate. And my throat really hurts.

And there's apparently a 2-hour seminar in the room where I think I left my umbrella, so can't go get THAT for another 25 minutes, and can't really do anything else useful like download things on the Net or go to the library till afterwards. Double growl.

And I'm coveting Toni Morrison books in the university bookshop, even though I have no money to buy them (or time to read them), but then happily spent a pound on sweets in the uni shop (though did not eat them all. Go me.)

And the man I love (or fancy most at the minute) is gay. Or secretly a big man-whore. Or probably just not interested.

All in all, not shaping up as a wonderful day.
