I LOVE OGLAF.

Also, there are about 5 million films I want to see on at the moment. At last count, Judge Dredd, Lawless, The Sweeney, When The Lights Went Out, Killing Them Softly and Savages, although maybe not Savages, because apparently it's directed by Oliver Stone, and I'm not terribly in the mood for a lot of blood and gore. Unless I am thinking am Sam Peckinpah. But anyway, the fact remains that I don't have time to see them all. I'd still quite like to see Ted, but I think that's gone from cinemas now. Which is nice, because this week it was only on at Xscape at about twenty to nine at night, and Xscape is kind of a bitch to get back from late at night. And maybe the only thing worse than it being impossible to do something, is for it to be possible but massively massively inconvenient.

Also in film-related news, I accidentally saw most of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo last night. The remake in English, but still set in Sweden. I say accidentally, because I came down to have tea, and my dad put it on, and by the time I was finished with tea I wanted to see how it ended. I didn't realise it was about 3 hours long. Anyway. Spoilers and mention of rape )

In videogame news, I am quite happily get along with Fallout 3, Overlord and Bioshock. All of which are great. The only 'issue' is that since playing Fallout 3, I'm kind of assuming my characters are female in all other games as well. Or at least in those two games. I don't know, I'm just used to playing as a female character, and characterising my characters as female. I MAY NEVER GO BACK. In Overlord, they call you a man a lot, but you're wearing quite a lot of armour, and you never speak, and your main weapon is your minions who you direct to attack other people. So you could literally be anyone under there. And Bioshock is in the first person, all you can see of your character is your hands, and you have no name so far and you never speak, so it's pretty easy to assume you're a woman there as well. And if people keep calling you 'son' and 'mister' and sort of hitting on you if they're a woman while implying you're a man, WHAT OF IT? Everyone's crazy in Rapture. What would they know?

I'm really enjoying Overlord, also. It's probably actually better than Dungeon Keeper, but I still miss Dungeon Keeper. I think that's the one downside videogames and videogame fandoms have compared to books and films and stuff - when you feel nostalgic over a book you used to love as a kid, you can read it again, but that's not always the case with vidoegames. Or at least PC games. I know there's issues with films and VHS and stuff, but they seem pretty happy to bring out quite a lot of things on VHS back out again on DVD, and with games not so much. IDK, maybe I'm just not trying hard enough. Although talking about nostalgia is sort of making me want to play Morrowind and Ghost Master again. Sigh.

No-one wants to write David/Gary slash for Coronation Street. A quick search on Google has sort of confirmed this. Although given the fact that there's now a court case in the air, and they're playing it as an actual love triangle sort of thing rather than Gary being a twat at David's girlfriend and David being jealous, it's not entirely a surprise. The people on the forums only seem to want to talk about which one is the least attractive and the most horrible. It's quite rub. Probably the show is just building to it, and I should be patient. They can't bring the Ultimate Teenage Criminal Team together straight away. But, dudes. This is the episode where Gary stalked him, with all the rubbish/irrelevant bits taken out. THE GAY IS VERY CLEAR. Probably a fandom will leap into being in the next week or so. Probably.

My secret pairing of Tony/Maria is apparently on the cards though, according to the soap magazine covers. So it's not all bad, I guess.

I’ve been a bit rubbish at LJ in the past week. This was basically my week:

Monday: I got to work and the heating was broken. Apparently if the temperature is 15 degrees Celsius it's illegal conditions. It was 16 degrees all day. They said something about getting some heaters in, but the man meant to be scouting out the place to see where to put them never arrived. Thankfully, they started working very weakly at about 3 or 4 o'clock. The next day it was back on properly and we got to work with our coats off.

Tuesday: Work without having to wear our coats, as I've said. And in the evening I went to the cinema, and had a whole screen all to myself for The Secret of Moonacre. Which I thought, coupled with the adverts, would be related to its quality, but it was actually quite good. It had Dakota Fanning, being a better Dakota Fanning than she was a Lyra Belacqua, in my opinion. It also had Hornblower/Ioan Griffiths in it. And Tim Curry. It wasn't brilliant - although the costumes very often were - but if you want a good, gentle fantasy film, I'd recommend it.

Wednesday: Things probably happened, but I can't remember what they were. I think I had to wash my hair, so not much. Possibly looking up a bunch of videos on Youtube, as I recall.

Thursday: It snowed, starting just before I left the office to go home, as I'm sure it did in many other places. They were doing Light Night taster events, so I saw a light show near the castle as I was coming back. I went to the train station, in snow, to get my train tickets for Redemption, abut was told they would be about the same price on the day, so there was no point booking a time. Then I went and had cake, because I quite like having cake in a cafe/cake shop when it's dark and snowing outside. And I've been in there before, but Lee Rosy's Tea seems to be leading the way in ambiently-lit cake and indie music shops in Nottingham. It was lovely, anyway.

But by this time it was about half past 6, I remembered I'd forgotten to do my little letter to go with my Jobseeker's book explaining that I was now in work and couldn't be bothered standing around on the street doing it, so just went for the bus. I went to the bus stop where the cheap buses go first, and there was one in, but it was out of service. They're usually pretty regular there, but I waited about ten minutes in the cold, and nothing came. The fact that a Light Night woman came around handing out glow sticks because she wanted to go home made it only slightly better. As I was stood three of the more expensive buses I could get went past, so I started walking down to that stop. And then the cheaper bus came. I ran back up, queued, and just as I was pretty much about to get on the driver said the bus was full and no-one else could get on. I walked down to the other bus stop again. I got there about 5 to 7. I was 7:30 by the time a bus came. And I'd been standing there with wet feet inside my boots. I could have walked home more quickly, but I thought it might be slippy on the pavements because of the snow. There wasn't that much snow though. The buses could possibly have bucked up, in my opinion.

Friday: Was the last day of the week, and the first day I'd been paid since December. And it was Light Night. And frankly, I think in the matter of festivals that are completely made up, I think Nottingham sort of wins. There was definitely a lot more stuff on than last year. The first bit was slightly spoiled by a man sat near me shouting a bunch of racist stuff to do with St George's Day, but eventually I moved away. There was the big wheel, as usual. Also a robot roaming the streets, people on stilts, jugglers doing David-Bowie-in-Labyrinth tricks with glass balls, roaming story tellers. The castle grounds were open for free and all lit up, they had a hot air balloon they kept lighting so it lit up, and a dragon made of LED lights mounted to a bicycle roaming round the place. And then there was a Nottingham goddess parade through the streets, with an accompaniment of young rhythm dancers who did a performance in the open space by Marks and Spencer’s. It was pretty great, even if I did look for where people were getting glow sticks from all night and never found out. I found one in the street on the way back home, though. That was fair enough. And it was good. I got home, shivered while waiting for the heating to come on, and watched NCIS.

Today Adam and Joe were on doing their Valentine's Day show, and Adam was quite lovely towards his wife Sarah. I didn’t know his wife was called Sarah. His love CAME WITH A MESSAGE THOUGH. He and Joe didn't declare their love to each other, but probably they do that off the air. And then I wandered around town trying to get stuff done before Redemption. Massive queues in Thornton’s and various places. Valentine's Day. It gets all over the place.

Casualty without Toby is not as good as Casualty with Toby. It's a huge shame.

And, just in case I don't get another chance -

This year was the year:

  • I walked with and stroked a wolf.

  • I went to not my first con, but my first official, not organised by fans con. And it was wicked.

  • I had Sarah over to stay. We found a cave.

  • I went to see Simon Amstell (at a gig).
  • I first had Cuban food.

  • I went to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds play live.

  • I went to the Eden Project (again).

  • I went on holiday to St Austell, Cornwall.

  • I spent 9 hours on a train doing the above.

  • I did a few film courses.

  • I started listening to the Adam and Joe Show on Saturday.

  • I started discovering music on the radio.

  • I watched Strictly Come Dancing, properly. And loved it. Even if parts of it went a bit odd.

  • I watched flamenco. That was quite good.

  • I loved girls and female characters. I did before, a bit, but it feels like it was more this year. And it was quite great.

  • I went to Camden.

  • I went to the British Museum.

  • I saw a nature documentary in the cinema, for the first time I think.

  • I went to the Nottingham Riverside Festival.

  • I first drank cranberry juice.

  • I found Alys Power.

  • I watched the Dark Knight and the Joker I LOVE YOU THE JOKER.

  • I spent 6 hours in a theatre, with only a one hour break, I think. For a very good production of War and Peace. That was a bit grand.

  • I first went to see a Bollywood film.

  • I got a new nephew. Who is walking now.

  • I started keeping plants. Some are still alive, as well.

  • I had my mother over to stay in my flat. Which went pretty well.

  • I built my own bookcase, as I recall. From a pack from Wilkinson's. With my OWN FAIR HANDS.

  • I joined the Broadway cinema as a member.

  • I went to see an ice show at the Royal Centre (The Sleeping Beauty).

  • I saw a DV8 production live.

  • I went to a 1940s street party, even if I didn’t get to wear my 40s costume there for very long.

  • I saw China Mieville.

  • I saw Swan Lake, done Chinese acrobatic-style.

These are the high points obviously, but looking back, not a terrible year.

Cinema adverts:

Spoilers for the Doctor Who season 4 promo )

The new Ford advert with the orchestra is quite pleasant, but totally missing a guy running in at the end and going "What...what have you done to my CAR?! I drive to work in that! My car! What - ?". And all the musicians looking faintly abashed.

Is it just me, or are almost all cinema adverts nowadays car adverts? Or speed warnings? They must think that everyone who goes to the cinema drives there, or WISHES THEY DID.

The Fiat advert I actually quite enjoy, because of the music and everyday masterpieces. I only don't enjoy the bits where they use this to spread propaganda about their car being one.

The Visit Scotland advert is quite sweet and cheesy, but the "far away from dry land" bit really just makes me think of "The sea forgives all! Not like those mean old mountains. I hate them so much!"

All the Direct Line Insurance ads really tell me is to never let my car or living room be involved in an insurance advert.

I hate the coke advert, except for the rainbow strap the busker wears, but that wasn't actually on today.

Trailers:

Eee, Semi-Pro! Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson, and Andre Benjamin! Maybe one day there will be an awards ceremony where they suprise Will Ferrell with all the gay boyfriends he ever had in his films. And I will flutter with glee.

The Spiderwick Chronicles one was actually last week, but mostly I love the girl who stabs things. And teaches her brother to stab things. And has good form (I believe). Maybe I should try to actually get into those books before the movie comes out.

I can't actually remember what else is out at the cinema at the moment. The Iron Man one was also on the other week. I love Robert Downey Jr.

Went to see Lemony Snicket with my mother, who very kindly bought dinner, coke and both Maltesers and Galaxy Swirls when I just couldn't decide (nice mother!)

Some thoughts )

In other news, did absolutely NOTHING on my essay. To be fair, it's up to 2,600 words now, out of 3,000, and I can write at least another 400 on Eliot, but I've only covered about half the subjects I wanted to cover. I sense some serious editing and a LOT more writing may be required. Sigh. It's really quite annoying how carried away I can get. I wanted it finished by today. HAVE to get started on the Language essay. Though to be fair I have about 3 weeks left to finish both of them, 4-ish in fact for the literature. It just means lots of work for the next few weeks, that's all. Sigh.

In happier news, my carpet's coming tomorrow, and dad wants a big day of moving my furniture back in, so could be re-installed in there by tomorrow night, and can use the desk for writing essays and everything. Might not feel so good once I'm in there, of course - it's really a tiny room, and there's no double bed. However, being in a green room will mean I'm free to buy those lovely pink fairy lights from Habitat, so perhaps is all good. Yay.

Also found some pretty Christmas earrings in Claire's Accesories (cheap chic!) for a mere £2.50, and realised the fabulousness of the cheap second-hand book stall in the local market. Jasper Fforde for £4 - get in!

Sensing a hard day of shifting furniture and essay-writing ahead of me tomorrow, anyway, so I'll be off. Goodnight all.
