This time next week, I'll be in Spain. Assuming there are no more clouds of volcanic ash. At any rate, I'm not quite prepared for it. I haven't done any holiday shopping, but happily, I have been buying new tops recently. Unfortunately some of them are those new tunic tops, and I don't really have anything to go with them. But I do have tops. And some pretty new jeans. And my dad bought me some new trainers, because he wouldn't let me take my current ones which are black with flames up the side. I can't imagine why. But anyway, I've got some stuff. No swimming costume, and no night wear, really. But I'm sure I can pick something up and get it all packed by next Saturday. Probably.

A thing I have done is finally paid off my final bills from my flat, emailed the paid bills to my landlords, and got my deposit back. Which is probably the last thing I'll have to do about my old flat. My deposit turned out to be a lot more than I thought it was going to be a few months ago, at £365. My only problem now is what to do with it. It has quite nicely paid off my overdraft, so I could just leave it there and switch to a regular account that I don't have to pay £7 a month for and one I wouldn't have to pay off if I wanted to switch to another bank. But my mother has suggested putting it back into my savings account, and given how much I have been taking out of it lately, that probably wouldn't be a bad idea. OR I could keep it, and...spend it. There's a lot of nice stuff I want. Nice nice stuff. The possibilities are not endless, but difficult to choose between.

DVD talk for a bit )

One thing I DID try to buy earlier, though, was Colour: Travels Through the Paintbox by Victoria Finlay, which I'd seen for sale at thebookdepository.com a month or so ago. I finally decided to buy it a few weeks ago, but when I went to thebookdepository.com, it was out of stock. I was worried that it wouldn't be available anywhere, but it was on sale at amazon.co.uk, and at play.com. I ordered it from play.com, and the web page said it was in stock, and 'usually dispatched within 24 hours'. I waited a week, and never got a 'We have dispatched your item' email. I thought maybe my order had gotten lost, so I cancelled it, and ordered it again. And again, I didn't get a 'We have dispatched your item' email, and when I checked the page again after a few days, it had changed to say 'usually dispatched within 6-8 weeks'.

Not wanting to lose my chance at getting it at all, I didn't cancel my order, but looked around, and found a seller on ebay.co.uk selling the books, brand new, for not much more than play.com would have charged. I ordered it - and recieved no 'We have dispatched your item' email. Something I'd ordered the day before came, the t-shirts I'd ordered from threadless.com a few weeks before came, and still no book. Finally, last Wednesday I checked my email, and there was an email saying they'd dispatched my book, and it would probably be there the next day. And sure enough, the next morning it came. But my mum has my youngest nephew over on Thursdays, so I spent most of the day with him, and then I was watching TV in the evening, and then our internet was on the blink that night. I managed to get on my dad's internet the next day, but I was meant to be going to get my oldest nephew so he could come to our house, and I forgot to go to play.com and cancel my order. That night, I went on again, went to play.com, thinking I would probably be okay since they'd said it would be 6-8 weeks. And what happened? They were bastard packing it, so I couldn't cancel the order. I can't cancel the order. So I'm going to have to wait for this book to arrive, and then send it back, which I've not done before.

Unless anyone on LJ would like a brand new book about the history of colour, and the travels of the woman researching it, for £7.49 plus postage? I haven't read it, so I can't say much about how good it is, but it looks pretty wicked. Alternatively, I will swap it for a DVD of Brotherhood. Or Danny Phantom.

Anyway. Enough of my capitalist woes. One thing I did buy without too much trouble was a little guide to British wildlife, in WH Smith reduced from £7.99 to £3. It is quite good, and I have also realised while reading it that the cutest baby animal, in my opinion, is fox cubs. Part of it is that they are adorable, part of it is the colour, and part of it the knowledge that when they grow up quite a lot of people will probably consider them vermin. But still. Fox cubs.

And I also realised that the more I learn about pikes, the less I like them. When I was at university part of our university handbook had something to say about the pike in the campus lake, and the fact that skinny-dipping wasn't a great idea given that it had been known to bite off fingers 'or other body parts'. The next year they brought out a new handbook, and made no mention of the pike. Naturally, I smelled a cover-up. I actually did a piece about it for the student radio I was involved with at the time. And the research I did on them for it gave me more than enough extra reasons to fear them. Check this out, from the new book: "The pike is a vicious predator that hunts alone. It lurks motionless amongst vegetation, waiting until its prey is close enough to reach." And, "At breeding time, the female is courted by two or more males and will eventually lay up to 500,000 eggs"(!) And, "Once they have reached three centimetres in length they begin to feed on small fish. From then on they are fully carnivourous, even eating other pike or fish the same size" (my emphasis). As far as I can tell, pikes? Are out to get us.

I was considering making this post just a big list of all the dvds I wanted to buy, but couldn't really afford. Count yourselves lucky you didn't get that.

On QI tonight they were talking about a "Vampire Squid from Hell" (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) which lives at such a depth in the sea that instead of defending itself by squirting out ink, it squirts out a small cloud of bioluminescent orbs/mucus, and defends itself 'by dazzling'. And suddenly I knew where Stephanie Meyer got her inspiration for the vampires in Twilight.

On the other hand, Stephen Fry was really pleased because he talked about a weird, little-known fact about a Buddhist cult, and everyone thinks that Buddhism is quite a sane religion, but it just proved they too were 'weird'. And fine, religion being weird, always a nice topic. But of all of them, Buddhists actually have quite a nice outlook on life and set of beliefs. So fuck off, Stephen.

On the other other hand, the guests tonight included Jack Dee and Sue Perkins, which was lovely. I had to put up with Jimmy Carr, but whatever. It's odd, I don't even really like Jack Dee's stand-up or comedy 'persona', but I still really like him, mostly based on his time on Celebrity Big Brother quite a few years ago, when he baked bread and shouted to his wife and kids that he loved them from the open doorway of the house during another person's eviction. If Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother gave me nothing else, they gave me that series.

Also on tonight was Casualty, and I hate Casualty. I can't believe they keep mentioning and having on the show the counsellor that Toby went off with. THEY SAID HE WOULD NEVER WORK THERE AGAIN. THEY SAID IT. And I know they have a slightly odd policy with the staff being able to leave and come back again, what with Nick Jordan being able to come and go as he pleases, but honestly. And it makes me think that Toby might be coming back, because it doesn't seem to make any sense to have him around unless Toby is eventually coming back, or sometimes coming back - although I realised tonight that it probably makes sense because the actor who plays the counsellor is either seeing or married to the actress who plays Ruth. But still. THEY SAID HE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO WORK THERE AGAIN. And it makes NO SENSE that he would still be around and able to tell Toby that yeah, one of the doctors he used to work with has lost his baby and his wife left him, and Ruth can't be a surgeon now and her life's in a mess, and that Toby wouldn't RUN IN, and be all "Dudes, dudes, dudes! You have FALLEN APART without me!", and hug them and comfort them and make them some tea. NO SENSE AT ALL.

I am forced to assume that Toby has left the counsellor man, and gone on ahead to the seaside town where Ruth will eventually run away to when her life becomes even more unbearable, and they will end up fighting crime. And to which Dr Jordan will follow them, and take his mentee Lenny Lyons with him because who else is available to mentor Lenny is his absence, in an attempt to bring Ruth at least back, and they will all end up fighting crime together. THEY WILL BE DOCTECTIVES. IT WILL BE GREAT.

And that is the TV I have watched tonight. I must now move on to tidying up my flat and boxing up some of my things for my dad to take back to Yorkshire tomorrow. Sigh.
girlofprey: (Coronation Street David Gary First Scene)
  • I made some Coronation Street icons. I forgot that icon-making can be kind of fun, even if kind of frustrating.

  • At the moment on Coronation Street, David Platt's heavily debt-ridden new stepdad has gone missing after telling David's mum he was going to fake his own death so she could collect on the life insurance (the canoe man from last year was mentioned at least once). She didn't want to but he sailed off onto a lake (in the Lake District) in the middle of the night anyway. She called David when her husband (Joe) still hadn't come back the next day, David came up and when she told him what was going on, told her to phone the police. She said no, because Joe would get in trouble, and she had to help him, or at least give him a chance to change his mind. So now David is helping her to lie effectively. It's sort of great. He really does want to help his mum, and it is his main skill. He thought up a whole story for her, and keeps telling her how to act so people will believe it, and occasionally freaking out when she isn't very good and nearly gives the whole thing away. Sadly, what they don't know is that Joe drowned while trying to fake his death, and his body just came up to the surface tonight. So in a while it's going to look slightly suspicious how much they were lying about where he was. Oh well.

  • David's 'enemy' Gary Windass is back from the army tomorrow also, and he's bringing a soldier friend with him. The soap magazines are saying that 'there may be more to their visit than meets the eye', though. It's probably not so they can double-team David. But I can dream.

  • I have to move in a week and a few days. Arrghhh.

  • A man came around to view the flat today with someone from my estate agents'. They had called and left a message about it a few days ago, and I was thinking about calling back and trying to reschedule it, because the flat is still a bit of a mess, but I figured I'd just have to do it another day. So I cunningly decided to tidy up a little bit and when they came around pretend that I hadn't heard anything about a viewing, and claim the flat was a mess because of pack so that they'd either a) leave, or b) not judge me too harshly. They came in, but they didn't seem to mind the mess too much. And it was a good incentive to start tidying up a bit. It was a bit weird to have people in the flat, but they were both pleasant enough. The guy asked a few questions about noise and how hot it was in the summer, and how much of the furniture came with the flat. I tried not to mention too many negative things about the flat, and a bunch of the positive ones. And then they left. So it was strange, but not too painful, in the end.

  • My mum and nephew came down on Friday for the Nottingham Light Night. Friday night and Saturday ).

  • My mum called in the middle of that paragraph and we ended up talking for about 50 minutes, so if there's a change of tone mysteriously that's why.

  • After there not having been much on at the cinema that I wanted to see (apart from the Princess and the Frog, sort of) for a few weeks or so, four films I wanted to watch came out last Friday. Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea, the new Studio Gibhli one, which I've been waiting for since the tutor of my Japanese Anime course mentioned it coming out a year ago; The Wolfman remake (on the assumption that werewolves + Emily Blunt = good times); My Name Is Khan, because I've seen two films now with Shah Rukh Khan in that I liked, and wanted to give this one a whirl; and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which is sort of about Greek Mythology and powers and stuff, and looked sort of interesting.

Vague spoilers, though not really, for Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea and The Wolfman )

Sadly, from having stuff to do all week and from what I know about how long my local Cineworld tends to keep showing Bollywood films, I have a feeling I've missed the chance to see My Name Is Khan. Although having said that, given that it was sold out and everything in the week, maybe they'll keep it on for another week. But if not I think that'll be that. So now there's just Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which I'm not as bothered about, but can probably see tomorrow or over the weekend. Yay.

  • I'm really tired, and I have to tidy the flat, properly, tomorrow, and start packing things up so my dad, who's coming down at some point over the weekend, can take them back to Yorkshire. It's one of those situations where I keep on thinking of new things I have to do. I have to call the electric company, and the water company. I have to cancel my internet contract. And my contents insurance. And clean the place. And sort through my bills to decide which can be thrown away now. And argh. I've got a week left. But I'll probably get it all done. I sort of have to, really.

  • The Princess and the Frog fandom continues to be not full of Facilier/Tiana shippers. I don't know why.

Hello. It's me. A few weeks ago I decided, since my computer didn't seem to be having the disk space issues it had been doing and I had a new external hard drive to clear space with anyway, to see if I could install an old game of mine, Morrowind, again. It turned out that I could, aside from some problems with the computer not recognising the game disk some of the time. But anyway, I've mostly been playing that rather than posting for the past few weeks. God I love Morrowind. I'm not exactly a big gamer, but it's probably my favourite game I ever had. And one of my favourite fantasy stories ever. But anyway.

I have been doing stuff though. I went to see the Snow Queen in London a few weeks ago, and stayed the weekend with [livejournal.com profile] cakesy. The Snow Queen, and staying with cakesy )

I also had two interviews. The interviews )

The flat things )

Anyway. In other news:

  • While I was at my parents' I picked up a belated Christmas present that wasn't delivered in time in December, the Wolf Almanac. And promptly spent most of my time at my parents' reading about wolves. I would be tormenting you all with Wolf Facts and discussing Erroneous Assumptions About Wolves somewhat endlessly, but I'm mostly a better friend than that.

  • I saw a part of an episode of Veronica Mars while I was at my parents', and am currently going through one of my regular bouts of rage about the lack of Aaron/Logan on the internet. Dudes. It was incestuous, abusive, AND Aaron was a Spoiler for season 1 ). How could it not have taken off??

  • I saw a beautiful hat in the sale in Accessorise last week, on the very day that I really properly did not have enough money to buy it with. It was a black trilby with two of those scrunched-up felt flowers attached to the side, a pink one and a grey one. It was beautiful, sort of Gangster-Feminine, but the next day, when I had slightly more money, it had gone. At the moment I'm vaguely planning to make one. If I can find the right bits in a haberdasher's.

Another thing I've been thinking - while I do feel like any money I get from now on should really at least partly go towards paying back what I've borrowed from my savings to pay for my rent and stuff lately - on the other hand, when I get the £200-ish deposit back from my flat (assuming I do move out at the end of February and they don't feel the need to buy new furnishing with it or keep it for some reason), it would probably pay pretty much for me to go to Eastercon. Assuming there are still places and I can find someone to share with. Hmm. It's a thought, anyway.
girlofprey: (Citizens Cope By Looting (Cloverfield m1)
Rubbish. I am it and my flat is covered in it. I thought when I left work on Monday that at least I would have a bit of time to tidy things up. That hasn't happened so far.

However, I have just called the Jobseeker's place to sign on. I was putting it off, because if I get a job before my first appointment as far as I know I don't get paid anything, and it's just a lot of messing about. But I have done it now. They managed to get me an initial checking in appointment thing at some unthinkable hour tomorrow morning. Bastards. Still, at least I actually got paid something last time, so there'll be some money coming in, hopefully. Which is always good.

And I have managed to finish Series 1 of Hana Yori Dango. OH HANA YORI DANGO. I love Makino. I love Tsukasa. I LOVE THE GOLD. I love the "Great I am". I love most of it. I'm planning to continue spending it wisely and watching Mohabbatein. Possibly after tidying up a bit.

On Sunday, Dancing on Ice was on. Roxanne went out, which was sad, but not unexpected at this point in the competition. She got her highest score and was brilliant with her prop which was a chair. She had to skate off against Zoe, who has sort of risen to be one of the favourites for the past few weeks, and whose skating routine got the highest or second highest marks from the judges, and when they asked Jason to say which one he wanted to save afterwards, he said this was a very close skate off, possibly the closest they'd had. He saved Zoe, of course, but I think it was about as close as he could come to saying he LOVED ROXANNE. Roxanne will be on the tour anyway. Which I'm going to see with my mum. Hurrah!

That's my fandom news. The other is that last night on Coronation Street, after Gary got off at the court case because Tina told the truth, Gary's mum said they should invite the Platts, including David, out for a drink to show they had no hard feelings. Gary insisted that he DID have hard feelings. I can't be imagining this.

A fact that I've just learned form the City Council magazine that gets delivered every month or so: St Anns in Nottingham has the oldest and largest allotment site in Britain. I might look into that. Another fact I learned from them: cockroaches can come into your flat or house by being carried in in the hard drive of your laptop. I will never entirely trust this laptop again.

Emmerdale )

I had a plan for this week. It was not to have a shower on Sunday, because it was far too cold in my flat, and when I woke up late on Monday it was to not go out and pay my rent and my water bill till the next day, and to stay in and have a shower and tidy up instead. So far I haven't done much of that. Although I have had a shower and the rent is paid, and I did a bit of tidying because the building underneath me had a leak through their ceiling and my landlords wanted to send the plumber round. It totally wasn’t me though. Hah.

What I have been doing is:

  • Through Youtube investigations, confirmed my suspicion that the first/2006 Big Fat Quiz of the Year is the only one worth bothering with. Although the second one does have David Mitchell. The first one has the origin of "congratuwell done". That's almost perfection in itself.

  • Reading brilliant Twilight parodies!

  • Watching brilliant Robert Pattison Twilight interviews! (It takes a while to load, and isn't particularly brilliant till about 3 minutes in, but then it is QUITE brilliant). It almost as good as having read the books.

  • Listening to my Woman and Woman Vol. 2 CDs I used to have and ripped to my computer. Walk On By! Love...Thy Will Be Done! I Don't Wanna Lose You! Why don't I have Cyndi Lauper albums? It's genius.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to pay my water bill again. And try to get them to pay me some Jobseeker's Allowance, still. And go to my agency and see if they have any work going. Because I sort of need a job at the moment. Soon-ish, really.
girlofprey: (Iron Man Tony Chest The Whole Movie Coul)
Spoiler regarding tonight's The Devil's Whore )

So far since Sunday I have: tidied up some of the rubbish around my flat, paid my rent and council tax, transferred money from my savings to pay for my rent and council tax, tidied the bathroom and cleaned the toilet, spoken to my landlords about the possible faulty wiring of my light and my broken toilet seat, and done all my washing for next week. I have not, as of yet, started Christmas shopping. Whuich is sort of unfortunate, except that I didn't really have the money to do any before. Still. Need to get started with it really.

I didn't post about the Dancing results. I loved the group dances. I love that they stole Brian and Heather's idea. And I love that he won. The quickstep was also very good, but I have made up my mind not to be impressed with the quickstep unless someone performs it to Grease Lightning. I can't remember what they danced to, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't that. Also, I was pretty sure that there would be no vid of Luke Rattigan to American Boy, and it seems that I was right. Dang.

On Thursday, my mum rang me and asked me how I fancied her coming down to Nottingham this weekend to see me, and staying over. I had to say "....um, not much?". Because my flat is a mess, and I did mention that I wanted to watch Casualty. So she's supposed to be coming down next weekend. She's been talking about coming down to Nottingham for about 6 months, by my count. And when she talked about hypothetically coming, she always talked about maybe staying in a hotel, and shouting me a bed maybe. For some reason she's changed her mind, even though she has a bad back and knows the only sleeping options are my bed up the ladder, the (short) couch, and a blow-up mattress on the floor, which last time someone stayed didn't even get blown up. I have a pump for it now, but still. I don't know why she wants to stay here, I can't really fathom it since there are hotels. But she does, so now I really need to clean it.

The bad part is, I have a 9 to 5 job that doesn't allow for time off and I'll probably be asked to do overtime for, two evening courses, I might end up going out on Friday for the regular after-work drinks thing, and I haven't done the washing yet - which I'll need by the weekend - or paid my rent or council tax, or sorted out my jobseeker's claim. I also need to watch a film I borrowed from one of my film course tutors as it's our last class soon.

The other part though, is that I'm pretty sure the wiring for the main light in the flat is faulty and the toilet seat's broken, so I need to call my landlord's and get some repair people in anyway, so it's probably best that I clean the place.

I still don't know why she wants to stay here. I might try to discuss hotels with her again.

I went to see the new Al Pacino and John Leguizamo film last night, Righteous Kill. Oh I love John Leguizamo. He talks real fast and sometimes in Spanish. He was quite beautiful in it. Al Pacino was also there being beautiful. More beautiful than Robert De Niro. But I didn't think overall it was a great film.

I also saw some trailers. Max Payne looks amazing. If a bit confusing.

If I could afford it, I would buy everything from Threadless.

If not I would buy everything I could afford from Lucy Art.

If not, I would buy everything I could afford from Shanalogic.

If not, I would buy a sculpture from Walter Awlson. Specifically, the one on page 7 called Lauren. Or the Fallen Angel one. Or Emma. Whatevs.

But I can't, really.

Today I went to my landlords about the bills for the 'flat above' the shop next to me, which keep getting passed back through to us. Hopefully, they're actually going to get sorted out at some point.
girlofprey: (Default)
  • I had a flat inspection today, and it's really quite wonderful having floorspace. I've managed to clutter up some of the surfaces, but I can probably fix that when I take out the bin.

  • Cornwall's off, due to no availability, which is annoying actually, because I haven't really had a holiday in a year. Possibly two years. Not a proper, wander around doing what you like holiday. Mostly my trips have included travelling long distances on most days of the holiday, or on some occasions, both days of the holiday. But what are you going to do?

  • I did not see Doctor Who at the weekend. But I did see In Bruges, which is a great film, and contains some of the best hitmen I've ever seen. By which I mean loveliest. And occasionally mean best.

  • I also saw Higniffy, through the magic of iPlayer. I love Jack Dee. I know lots of other people don't, but I do. I love it when Paul makes him laugh. I love it when he can't help smiling on the "Webisode". I love him. And Paul. And Ian.

  • Last week on Emmerdale, people were taking it in turns to stalk Carl. It was great.

  • Also over the weekend, I remembered that there was a film I liked Heath Ledger in other than the Batman Begins Dark Knight trailer. I got a free DVD with one of my magazines full of trailers for the summer, which had that on there, and is great. But anyway, I watched The Brothers Grimm again. I love The Brothers Grimm. I love Jake. I love Will. I love Cavaldi. I can't believe there isn't more Cavaldi/Grimms slash. That's just a bit pointless. But there is plenty of Will/Jake, so hurrah. Oh. Yay.

  • And now I must go to bed because it is late and my hair is still quite wet.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
You know when you get an idea that's completely mad, but you realise actually really works? That's what happened last night when I got the idea of a Princess Bride version of There Will Be Blood. I don't know how it came about, except for the sentence "Eli came to realise that when Daniel said 'I drink your milkshake', he really meant 'I love you'". Daniel would make a great Dread Pirate Roberts. And I can't think of any two people better suited to the "I'm sure you really loved your intended before you decided to marry someone else, YOU FAITHLESS WHORE" conversation. Oh. I don't know why some of my favourite stories about the shows or films I like are the stories of others shows or films. I JUST DON'T KNOW.

Last night there was ice-skating on the TV, which was really quite unfair and distracting. I think ice-skating might be My Sport. And oh God, Chris Fountain. He was beautiful. I think he should have won. The two semi-finalists had to do a version of Bolero, and they were both great. BUT CHRIS FOUNTAIN IS BEAUTIFUL. They're going on tour soon. It would be great to see them live.

Tidying: Bits of my flat are now definitely tidier than they were before. And the mess is a lot more centralised, which means it's a big pile in the middle of my floor rather than scattered all over the place. I think this probabkly going to have to be an ongoing project. Except that tonight I have to hang up my washing. You know when you think "Oh, I'll just do the washing" and then it takes forever? Dude.

Today I failed to get up. But I did manage to get down to the local charity shop to pick up a brooch I asked them to put aside for me. It only cost a pound and is the most beautiful ugly thing I have ever seen. It is blue with moons and stars on it. I'm planning to wear it to Orbital. Also I saw someone from my old job at the council, and explained that I work with ex-criminals now. She agreed that this was probably better than what we were doing at the council before.

There are two solicitors' offices in Nottingham whose telephone numbers end in 666. You'd think they'd want to get away from those connotations. There's also an insurance place called "K.R. Phakey and Partners". Probably they do high-level business type insurance, but if you'd run into someone else's car you wouldn't want to give "K.R. Phakey" as your insurance place, would you?

The job for the rest of the day is to tidy the flat, which is such a tip you wouldn't believe it. First job is really to tidy up my recycling, otherwise known as the mess. If an ambassador from a colony of insects that live there comes out to negotiate terms, it could take a while.
girlofprey: (Default)
Well, this weekend has been a bit of a lose for usefulness. It mostly started yesterday when I didn't wake up until 12:30 due to not setting the alarm. But given the fact I was up with period pains for a little while in the night and how late I normally go to bed through the week, I thought this was fair enough.

Cut for possible TMI )

So I was late into town to get some stuff I can't get on my lunch-break or the half an hour after I finish work when the shops are still open, and then late back. And then I spent a few hours doing nothing - NOTHING AT ALL that I can remember.

My plan was to change the bed sheets this weekend before the day it's been a year since I officially starting renting the flat. Yes, yes, not changing the sheets, disgusting probably. But it turns out, when I went to do it, that I didn't bring an extra set of sheets when I moved in. Only extra pillowcases. So I need some more of those. Or at least to wash the old ones. So I'll probably have to break out the sleeping bag for a few nights. Hmm.

Anyway. So I woke up this morning from a night on the couch, mooched around for an hour or two, went to the laundrette, had to come back and lay down on the couch for an hour, and then went into town far too late to buy any food. And now I'm here. No tidying got done. None. And I still need to hang up the washing. Bit of a bust, really.

On the plus side, I did find a film that was ALL ABOUT a young man being possessed. Amityville II: The Possession was on on Friday night - the clue was in the title really. I didn't see all of him but it mostly seemed to involve him being manhandled by priests and having his face slapped ocassionally when he was drifting off in possession-land. And the priests would every now and then implore him to "resist the being that commands you!". I mostly can't believe the Universe never mentioned it to me before.

Adventures today included:

  • I checked my electricity meter, and saw where it was. We don't actually have access to the meters in our set of flats, they're in a privately-owned garage below, although it's privately owned by a quite nice and rather accomodating man. My landlords took some readings and sent them to me in November, and my electricity company sent me a letter in December saying they had never actually got in to see my meter and were basing my bills on estimates so I could I take some readings and get back to them please, and I finally called on Tuesday-ish to give them the landlords' readings. Apparently they showed my billing was wrong even then, and the guy asked me to take some more up-to-date readings if I could. I popped a note through the garage door on Thursday, but as I was passing the garage today I noticed it was open and asked the guy if he'd got my note, and he offered to let me take some readings then. Sometime between realising how big the garage was inside and him taking me down some stairs to the underground bit, kicking over car parts all the way, I realised it might not have been the best plan in the world. But I saw the set-up and took the readings, and gave them to the electric company tonight, so it's all good. I hope their billing is wrong in that it's too high, rather than the other way around. I'm generally pretty careful with the electricity I use, although I have had the heating up pretty high recently. Anyway. They're sending me a new bill, so I guess I'll find out.

  • I went into the shop I'd been looking at on the way down into Nottingham that sells garden stuff, finally. I don't actually have a garden, but there's never a bad time or place for tealight holders, is there? It was lovely, anyway. They had rather a multitude of wasp catchers, and pots of seeds, and little books on beekeeping and fruit-growing. And they had a sale on. Although probably not for long at this point.

  • I totally got the hand-towel I was looking for. Hah.

  • I went into one of the antique stores on Derby Road as well, as it was closing down. I found rather a lovely bowl carved with dragons and flowers, and when I thought it was £15 they almost had a sale. It turned out it was £115. Oh well.

In other news, this week Disturbia arrived, as did the Eagle Vs Shark soundtrack I've wanted since I saw the film at the cinema and was only available on random websites in New Zealand until a seller on Amazon starting listing it, and the new Constantine novel (in the right order). So I have films and music and reading, I just can't spend anything for the next few months. I think that's fair enough.

Choices for tomorrow include: going to do the washing; taking all my recycling to the big recycling site in Nottingham to finally get rid of it; going food shopping for the week; trying to get that underwear I wanted earlier on. Or possibly ALL FOUR.

Other things:

  1. I have become mildly obsessed with that Spoilers for songs from Sweeney Todd and plot details )

  2. Pairings I have from Sweeney Todd include:

  3. Searching Youtube seems to suggest that no-one has done a 'Blame Canada' vid with characters from Due South and Stargate Atlantis and Wolverine from the X-Men. Maybe I'm just not looking right.

On Wednesday night I did some straddling, some pushing, and quite a lot of screwing. I got pretty hot and my hands are still killing me. But I totally built myself a bookcase. It is quite small and came in a kit from Wilkinsons, but that doesn't mean you should be ANY LESS IMPRESSED. It stands up and everything. Last night I put books on it, and they remain on it now. One of the shelves looks like it's bowing a bit, and there's a book that fits on one part of one the shelves but not on a bit further up, so I don't think it wins at straightness. But still. I love it rather a lot.

I'm trying to get some stuff done around the flat. I never really took any time off when I was moving in, and I don't think I've ever really just spent a day in it. I've always been working, or looking for work, or having to go out and do the jobs I couldn't do during the week when I was working. So I really just want to get some stuff sorted. I was thinking that when this job finishes, which it might do soon, I might take a week off, to just sort of be around the flat and sort through stuff, but I don't think I'll be able to afford it really. Not with those plays in February and Orbital in March. Hmf.

Last night I went to see Sweeney Todd. Possible (and actual) spoilers )

Right. I'm off into town now. Ta-ra.

  • Are there are any more beautiful three words in the world than Final Clearance Sale? Suddenly all the most colourful, cheapest tat in the world can be yours!

  • I have a new neighbour. She came to the door yesterday to ask when the bins are taken out and which days the binmen come, and already I think I've exchanged more words with her than I ever did with my previous neighbour. She seemed quite suprised and bewildered by the lack of a washer and dryer, but also seems like the kind of person who will take in her own mail. And she changed the lightbulb in the hallway. I think this will go quite well.

  • Really the best part about the time after Christmas is clearance Christmas chocolate. I'm aware that the bags of Thorntons mishapes aren't really particularly cheap at £1.99, but still I get to have 200g of broken chocolate figures to snack on. Mmm, Santa's leg...

  • Today there was actual sunshine, that I saw and walked in. And when I finished work there was a bit of blue in the sky. It was like some kind of magic. I CALL IT THE MAGIC OF SUN.

  • Stephen Mangan has been given his own show on Thursday nights and is on TV again. This is very good. He is QUITE BEAUTIFUL. ALL THE TIME. He's a recovering alcoholic who isn't terribly impressed with his AA group, or life without alcohol. Mostly he accidentally seduces people and has to go hide upstairs when it all goes wrong. And wears jackets. OH. IT'S GREAT.

  • La Senza did not have underwear in the size I wanted. Wilkinsons do not have a hand towel in the colour I want. A pox on them.

  • There is a Cross-Gen/Incest Porn Battle here that includes prompts for Veronica Mars but not any for Aaron/Logan. What the hell, mostly?

  • Never Mind the Buzzcocks is still very good. Am I wrong in thinking that the singer guy tonight looked a bit Sylar-ish? Like if Sylar suddenly decided he wanted to be in a British semi-famous indie band? Can anyone who watched it remember the second intro he and Phil did though? I remember knowing it, but can't remember what it was (hmph).
