We're having a miniature Israel vs. Palestine fight at the University of Nottingham (link here. I turned on the TV and ITV news were reporting on it, to my surprise. Basically, members of the Palestinian Society have taken over a lecture room, although they're not trying to disturb lectures apparently, and making certain demands of the University to support Palestine. Scholarships and so forth. It's sort of funny, because I used to have English lectures in that room. However, just as the reporter turned up tonight to cover the story live, a group from the Israeli and Jewish Society turned up with banners, saying the Palestinian group should be talking about things Hamas have done as well as asking the University to condemn Israel's actions, and are sitting across the lawn from them. It's sort of a battle of the peaceful protests at the moment, but it's funny to have these things suddenly hit close to home. The Palestinian group are annoyed that this is the only one of a series of protests across the country where the University has full stop refused to speak with them at all. They ought to know the University of Nottingham is a bit evil. They do go there. Anyway. They seem to be getting along alright with their separate protests at the moment. Hopefully things won't escalate.

My flat is sort of tidy. The person who was meant to be coming around on Tuesday to inspect it however never turned up. It is nice to have a bit of floor space though. I might take pictures, while it's not a bit of a tip.

On the job front, I have not really applied for any new ones. Which is not great, really. Although, what with flat inspections that never happened and my nephew's birthday on Saturday, I have been a bit busy. However there was a job at the Lakeside Arts Centre, which I told my Job Centre dude I had applied for because it was online and my details were already in the University of Nottingham HR system (hush, it's a white lie). My attempts to apply for it )

That is most of my news. Other than that I love Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. My alarm clock radio station mostly plays Coldplay and Elbow and things like that, but occasionally you get some lovely old rock song just as you're waking up. Which is nice, when it happens.

Also I'm going to my parents' for the weekend tomorrow. Doubtlessly to a stack of career helping books and things cut out of the newspaper about law and teaching courses you can take. Also to see my two nephews. Which will make up for it.

I'm aware that my post last night about Casualty was pretty much just a rant. Yes.

HOWEVER - I will say that if I did get a ticket for Shades, it's looks like I would be actively shunning the play belonging to [livejournal.com profile] whatho's least favourite person. I think. I'm not quite sure.

I'm back at my flat in Nottingham now. It's verey, very cold. Just so you know. But they have fixed my toilet seat. Hurrah.

I come to you with tidings of success. The flat totally got tidied. And I managed to rent a 40s dress from a vintage shop down Derby Road. And shoes. And gloves. And a hat. And a bag. And a fur. The only problem is that I checked back to the text K sent me about this party, and it's not actually a friend of hers' party at all. It's some sort of party to round off a festival, and K thinks people won't necessarily be dressing up for it all that much. Oh well. At least I'll be appropriately dressed. And it is a lovely dress. And hat. And pair of gloves.

And now I'm off to London for the weekend. After packing. Hurrah!

Nick Cave is touring again in November. That's not very fair. Bad form, Nick. I have three other gigs to consider in October/November. And most of them are at least conveniently situated. However. It seems like it would be great to see him play somewhere in the North of England. I don't know why. It just sort of does.

Other news includes the fact that I'm going to London next week to see K, who's split up with J, I can't remember if I mentioned that. We're going to see Avenue Q, but she also has a friend who's having a street party on the Sunday, which is 40s themed. I have so far yet to find anywhere or anything which will tell me definitively what the 40s look is, never mind gone out to see if I can find anything suitable, or find anything suitable and cheap. I think I'm going to need shoes for this party. I'm not sure white and pink trainers will cut it.

Also I still need to tidy the flat. It's fine. I just need to put the books on the floor on the bookshelf, the paper on the floor into the drawers, and the paper behind the couch into bags to go to the recycling bins.

Also, I went to see Swan Lake with Chinese acrobats (in the show, not accompanying me), which was great, although I think it might have spoiled me for any other performance of Swan Lake. I will probably be going "But where are the hat jugglers? WHERE ARE THEY?". But it was great. The main ballerina, who was brilliant, danced on tiptoe on the prince's shoulder. And the swan maidens were briefly on rollerskates. I quite want a piece of clothing that is white and has feathers on it now. And possibly sequins. Hmm. And I went to see You Don't Mess With The Zohan. I still don't know quite how I feel about Adam Sandler playing an Israeli soldier/ex-soldier. I could be wrong and he's very, very Jewish, but still. But there was a guy who was playing a Palestinian terrorist who was his arch-nemesis (sort of), and he was crazy and great and cool and funny, in a really exaggerated way of course, but still, and then it turned out it was John Torturro! He's just brilliant, I bever recognise him. Although the fact he was wearing sunglasses and a scarf over his face for a lot of the film probably helped with that in this case. But anyway, I love him. I quite loved Adam Sandler too. Hmm.

I'd also like to go on record saying that the other day when I said I loved the O'Connells, I wasn't including Alex. I'm not crazy.

The flat inspection is actually next Tuesday. Which I found out when I found the letter while tidying the flat.

I had a sort of star-studded dream last night. Shia LeBeouf was definitely there, as well as John Lithgow and Christian Slater, briefly. I can't remember most of it, but some of it was definitely a new version of the Incredible Hulk. He was fighting some ooze. John Lithgow was the ooze in human form. And it all got a bit slashy towards the end.

Speaking of star-studded, I don't think I talked about trailers last week. I went to see two films on Tuesday, the Dark Knight (again), because work was a bit stressful and I thought a dose of Decent Film would cheer me up, and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, because I noticed they were showing it two weeks in advance for one day only. I saw many trailers. Burn After Reading, the new Coen brothers one, was one of them, and dude. There's not a person in that that's not a star, is there? It didn't give you much idea what it was about though. A Total Film article on it a few months ago said it was a monster movie, I think. I'm not entirely sure. Also, there's going to be another Will Ferrell movie out soon. I've not heard much about it, but it's bringing back the winning pairing of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly from Talladega Nights, so I'm assuming it'll be half-decent. And it's nice of them to put Al Pacino and Robert De Niro together in another film, since I never got round to seeing Heat. It's very nice of them to put them together in a film with John Leguizamo. I might be able to slash him with someone. That would be grand.

And now I need to go have a shower. Dang.

Things:

  • If your MP3 player ever asks you "Format: OK?" - click no.

  • I saw The Mummy 3 on Friday. I love the O'Connells. I don't care if they're rubbish. I don't think they are. They put The Mummy on TV yesterday as well. I had forgotten that Rick O'Connell is QUITE GREAT in that also. I remember being a bit in love with him when I saw it when I was 15. It's nice to find out that I was QUITE CORRECT. Also, it is very refreshing to see a film with female characters. Plural. Michelle Yeoh was great. And the other woman. And the other woman. And Evie. I didn't think I was a big fan of Evie, but this film proved me wrong.

  • The flat is a mess. I'm having a flat inspection on Tuesday and it needs to be clean. That hasn't happened so far.

  • I'm going to try to save up for Lustre. We'll find out how successful that will be.

  • However, it does mean that long weekend in Blackpool is probably off, because it's the weekend after that gig. Also there's a gig I wouldn't mind going to in Nottingham the day after that gig in Blackpool. Decisions, vaguely impossible decisions.

  • And I still haven't found anywhere that sells that band's CD.

One day I'll stop doing all my posts as lists of bullet points. Honest.

A Poll

In your knowledge/opinion, the Golden Compass movie:

  • Using spoilers from the rest of the books in the trilogy?

  • Making up extra stuff for their own purposes?
If it's the first one, I may actually have to avoid it, which will be disappointing.

Had flat inspection on Thursday. Didn't get all the cleaning I wanted to done, but it turns out that where things can't be cleaned, wiping is just as effective for a visual test. Sadly not everything could be wiped, but still, they haven't written any angry letters to me yet. And I like the flat being clean. It's amazing how much bigger places look when you hoover the floor. It needs a bit of a dust and the drawers tidying, and a bookcase for the books and stuff on the floor, but other than that I'm quite pleased with it at the moment.

And then last night I went to London to see Interpol play at the Alexandra Palace. I need to update LJ more often I think. The gig )

Then I had to get back to Cee's flat by myself at 11 o'clock at night. I had a route all planned out on the buses because I didn't particularly want to take the tube, but after getting a bit lost then finding my bus route again and having three of my buses go by packed with Interpol fans, I decided to sod it and got a bus to the tube station. It turns out the tube is packed at quarter to midnight on Fridays, or at least the ones going to Kings Cross. So it was all fine. And then this morning Cee took me for breakfast, to a lovely place that offered pancakes I failed to take advantage of. And I had a smoothie, though I wasn't expecting the tanginess of the blueberries. Then Cee went off to do some shopping, and I had a wander through Islington. Bought my own Kripy Kremes, and managed to do a bit of Christmas shopping. My schedule for the next few weeks looks like this:

This weekend - Interpol in London
Next weekend - A thing at Newstead Abbey with my parents, briefly
The weekend after - Free
The weekend after that - Last weekend before Christmas, for which I'll have just gone back to my parents

So I need to get a start on it really. Anyway. I came back to Nottingham, and missed my train so had to pay £30 for a new ticket. Which was shitty. But will at least teach me not to miss it again. And I went to see Fred Claus, with my "free" evening. It was a bit beautiful. Vaguely spoilery )

And now I'm home, and my mum just called to say my uncle Bill has died. Which is sad. It's sort of strange because I never really saw all that much of him and my aunt's family, or at least not recently, and he's had terminal cancer for a while. But I did see him ocassionally, and know him, and he was only 65. But them's the breaks, I guess. I mostly feel bad for my aunt. I'm going to try to send her a card, I think. Or send it to my mum to give to her. I think she's been prepared for it for a while too, but still.

Time was just impossible this weekend. Especially after K called and asked if I wanted to go do something on Saturday. I can't even remember if I mentioned it, but K and J moved away from Nottingham at the beginning of November, back down South, when J finished his MA. But K has an arts project going on here, so she's back up for a month, and wanted to do something when she got back this weekend. It was nice though. We went for (cheap) dinner at Wetherspoons, and used the table surrounded by sofas, although a random couple wanted to sit opposite us because there was no other space. Thankfully they eventually found another table. Then we went to see The Darjeeling Limited at the cinema, which I highly recommend. I don't really understand people who don't love Adrien Brody.

But I didn't do half the stuff I wanted to do. I'm having a flat inspection on Thursday, and wanted to spend the weekend cleaning. That didn't quite happen. Hmm. But I do still have three evenings. And I did clean the toilet, which has been on the to-do list for some time, and sweep the kitchen floor. I think it might need to be mopped. I've never mopped it. I'm not sure I have anything to mop with. You know. Mop potion. The stuff you put in the water. Probably it's just soap. Hmmm.

Actually, I took the bin out as well. I'm doing quite well.

And I got a bus pass. Which was a bit more expensive than I was expecting it to be, but should still save me money, and means I don't have to keep getting tenners out and buying things to get change. And obviously it came with it's own hideous bus pass photo. The words "I'm a monster!" spring to mind. It's an unlimited card though, which means I can travel anywhere inside a nice little circle around Nottingham for free. Which mostly means all I want to do is jump onto any random bus I see. Or tram. I can get the tram for free as well. I won't do that. Especially not on a weekday. But it's still a nice idea.

Anyway. Tonight I have to:

  • Wash up.

  • Sort out all the stuff I tidied out of the window bottom last night.

  • Move my random empty boxes somewhere.

  • Hoover. (But not the roof).

  • Look up recycling for all that extra stuff I haven't yet recycled.

  • Possibly go through my drawer of useful junk. It can't all still be that useful.
I imagine this will all go to plan.

Apologies if I haven't replied to any comments. It's all gone a bit hectic.

Oh! Also, today I had some snickerdoodles. The American guy at work baked them. They're lovely, basically sugar and cinammon in the form of a biscuit, and not a funny shape as I was half-expecting. Have any of you eaten anything with such a lovely name? No, I bet you haven't.

I am the worst grown-up you have ever met. Seriously. Some general ranting )

Town takes longer than it really feels like it should.

I've been quite busy this week. Mostly I think I just shouldn't get involved in fandoms that have fic written for them. That way only leads to madness, and no sleep. Though it turns out coffee helps with that.

The job is going pretty well. I'm working for an NHS Mental Health clinic, and it literally is just answering phones and transferring people, and typing up letters. And dealing with people in reception. Sometimes it gets a bit hectic when all those things happen at once - and they keep trusting me to come in a bit early and unlock all the gates and fire exits (fools). And sometimes people call up and are crying, but mostly it's all easy enough to cope with, if you know what to do. We only get a half an hour for lunch, which is annoying, but the area's quite nice and my work when I'm in there is mostly to be near the phone. And the people there are really nice, and friendly. Apparently the temp who was there before me, on Monday, came in the morning and then walked out at lunchtime, so mostly they think I'm great for still being there. There is a fire exit right next to the toilet though, so frankly I think they're asking for it. But I have no intention of escaping. I've only got the job for another three weeks though, which sucks a bit.

Otherwise I have mostly been learning that my "independent" life doesn't involve a) cleaning, b) posting on LJ, or c) sleeping. The bathroom quite powerfully needs a clean at this point. That might be this evening's job. And there was an issue on Thursday when K texted me to ask a 'big favour' - could I put her up for a month in November. Now, most of you haven't seen my flat because I can't work a digital camera (or at least keep it supplied with batteries), but it is essentially a room. It's a fairly big room, but a room nonetheless. And I don't have guest bed, she would be on the sofa, which is uncomfortable for me, and she's taller. For four weeks. While she was assumedly working on a project she's trying to set up here, and I was probably trying to keep out of her way. Mostly I flailed a bit, asked for more time. Then on Friday we talked about it, I explained that I thought it would be a bad idea for 4 weeks, though 1 or 2 would be fine, but that she could stay for 4 if she really wanted to and needed to. Because it is going to be important to her project, and she and J did it for me. Which she seemed happy with. Nothing's really set in stone at this point though, so we'll have to wait and see how it turns out.

This Wednesday I have to pay my rent, and it'll be the last month I have to pay rent for this flat. It's sort of freeing and nerve-wracking at the same time. I don't think I'll leave the flat any time soon, if I don't have to. I quite love it, even if the heat is a bit variable. And I love Nottingham. Yesterday I discovered the joy of Pumpernickels, which is a sandwich bar with armchairs and tudor benches in the back. There's a bar in town that does a teapot of shots, and the Ted Baker has a spiral staircase. Probably lots of cities have things like that. I quite like this one.

Other things:

  • I'm a bit in love with the [livejournal.com profile] the_sc_files. OH GOD, GABRIEL. OH GOD.

  • I'm watching myself for Heroes spoilers, because people have started to watch it. But I'm planning to watch it myself on BBC2, as a kind of catch-up. But BBC2, WHAT IS THE POINT OF REPEATING IT REALLY LATE AT NIGHT ON WORKNIGHTS?

  • I'm thinking of swapping out a bunch of my icons, but also thinking about not renewing my paid account when the time comes.

  • The Simpsons Movie, which I saw on Friday with K and J, is very very good. I laughed quite embarassingly loudly. And we had doughnuts. That was win.

  • I'm still mostly in love with Draco Malfoy.

  • Some other things, probably.
