Went to see Lemony Snicket with my mother, who very kindly bought dinner, coke and both Maltesers and Galaxy Swirls when I just couldn't decide (nice mother!)

Bit of a mixed bag, really - things I liked, things I didn't like. Did not like the 'secret society/conspiracy' plotline. If it was just random it's-a-movie-so-we-have-to-explain-everything stuff, I will hold it in contempt. If it is stuff from later in the series that we're not meant to know about yet, I will be annoyed. May possibly kill someone. But who wouldn't be missed? Also the screwing up of the series of events (ha ha), in order for said conspiracy thing to work. And random saying of certain sentences very LOUDLY and CLEARLY so everyone understood that they were trying to get a message across here. Growl

The MASSIVELY American accents of the kids were annoying also - part of what I like about the series is how nationality-free it is; it's pretty much as easy to imagine it happening in England as America, or Switzerland, or Transylvania. And Klaus not wearing glasses to blatantly show off how 'reasonably attractive' he and the other children were. Annoying.

Things I did like, on the other hand: the way everything looked. Particularly Lake Lachrymose (eek, leeches!), and the Reptile Room. And yay, the Incredibly Deadly Viper! Was sure they'd leave that out, but no, they clearly recognised its wonder. And liked the real sense of danger you got whenever the kids were in trouble, even if it wasn't quite as it was in the books. They still all worked together pretty well, though.

Meryl Streep was also good, though could happily have done without the Jospehine/Captain Sham innuendo. Also strange Klaus/Violet 'Flowers in the Attic' vibes (shudder). Jim Carrey was not as bad as I was worried he'd be, though did go off into the realms of panto at times. Still utterly despicable and often scary (yet strangely compelling) though. Yay.

Things I REALLY enjoyed: I WANT Violet's wardrobe! And to live with Lemony Snicket/Jude Law in a clock tower. Thought Olaf's 'troupe' was fantastic, as well - hurray for skinny, bitchy chorus girl! And is it wrong to be a little attracted to the hook-handed man? (Also, was it just me or was one of the Littlest Elf's friends holding a shotgun? Hmm...)

In other news, did absolutely NOTHING on my essay. To be fair, it's up to 2,600 words now, out of 3,000, and I can write at least another 400 on Eliot, but I've only covered about half the subjects I wanted to cover. I sense some serious editing and a LOT more writing may be required. Sigh. It's really quite annoying how carried away I can get. I wanted it finished by today. HAVE to get started on the Language essay. Though to be fair I have about 3 weeks left to finish both of them, 4-ish in fact for the literature. It just means lots of work for the next few weeks, that's all. Sigh.

In happier news, my carpet's coming tomorrow, and dad wants a big day of moving my furniture back in, so could be re-installed in there by tomorrow night, and can use the desk for writing essays and everything. Might not feel so good once I'm in there, of course - it's really a tiny room, and there's no double bed. However, being in a green room will mean I'm free to buy those lovely pink fairy lights from Habitat, so perhaps is all good. Yay.

Also found some pretty Christmas earrings in Claire's Accesories (cheap chic!) for a mere £2.50, and realised the fabulousness of the cheap second-hand book stall in the local market. Jasper Fforde for £4 - get in!

Sensing a hard day of shifting furniture and essay-writing ahead of me tomorrow, anyway, so I'll be off. Goodnight all.
