Some bullshit I have heard in the last few weeks:

  • One of the Let's Players I watch 'jokily' explaining that if you guilt or pressure a woman into sleeping with you, she isn't unwilling, it's not like you tricked her into it.

  • My dad, last night, saying that 'people talk about slavery, but in this country we sent children into mines and basically killed people in the mills, maybe the toffs in London had it better than them but we didn't', and then tried to tell me some 'historical facts' about slavery, and then said that really, 'slavery' was just a word, and I don't know what to say to him anymore. I ended up just repeating 'no' till the conversation was over.

  • Some arsehole on my train home yelling at one of our train conductors about how the train was always late, and then they had to de-couple it from another train and we were all left standing on the platform, and there was no 'uniform procedure'. If he had kept it up any longer, I would have suggested he write to the train company if he had a grievance, or, I don't know, the government for having no interest in funding or providing public services, but after the dude insisted he was angry because of the way the train conductor had spoken to him (entirely respectfully), the train conductor said "well, good luck with that", and closed the door so he could decouple the train.

On the other hand, I did quite enjoy all the EU leaders going to Theresa May and being like "he's no good for you girl" about Donald.

I LOVE OGLAF.

Also, there are about 5 million films I want to see on at the moment. At last count, Judge Dredd, Lawless, The Sweeney, When The Lights Went Out, Killing Them Softly and Savages, although maybe not Savages, because apparently it's directed by Oliver Stone, and I'm not terribly in the mood for a lot of blood and gore. Unless I am thinking am Sam Peckinpah. But anyway, the fact remains that I don't have time to see them all. I'd still quite like to see Ted, but I think that's gone from cinemas now. Which is nice, because this week it was only on at Xscape at about twenty to nine at night, and Xscape is kind of a bitch to get back from late at night. And maybe the only thing worse than it being impossible to do something, is for it to be possible but massively massively inconvenient.

Also in film-related news, I accidentally saw most of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo last night. The remake in English, but still set in Sweden. I say accidentally, because I came down to have tea, and my dad put it on, and by the time I was finished with tea I wanted to see how it ended. I didn't realise it was about 3 hours long. Anyway. Spoilers and mention of rape )

In videogame news, I am quite happily get along with Fallout 3, Overlord and Bioshock. All of which are great. The only 'issue' is that since playing Fallout 3, I'm kind of assuming my characters are female in all other games as well. Or at least in those two games. I don't know, I'm just used to playing as a female character, and characterising my characters as female. I MAY NEVER GO BACK. In Overlord, they call you a man a lot, but you're wearing quite a lot of armour, and you never speak, and your main weapon is your minions who you direct to attack other people. So you could literally be anyone under there. And Bioshock is in the first person, all you can see of your character is your hands, and you have no name so far and you never speak, so it's pretty easy to assume you're a woman there as well. And if people keep calling you 'son' and 'mister' and sort of hitting on you if they're a woman while implying you're a man, WHAT OF IT? Everyone's crazy in Rapture. What would they know?

I'm really enjoying Overlord, also. It's probably actually better than Dungeon Keeper, but I still miss Dungeon Keeper. I think that's the one downside videogames and videogame fandoms have compared to books and films and stuff - when you feel nostalgic over a book you used to love as a kid, you can read it again, but that's not always the case with vidoegames. Or at least PC games. I know there's issues with films and VHS and stuff, but they seem pretty happy to bring out quite a lot of things on VHS back out again on DVD, and with games not so much. IDK, maybe I'm just not trying hard enough. Although talking about nostalgia is sort of making me want to play Morrowind and Ghost Master again. Sigh.

Discussion of rape and sexual abuse, based on something I saw on TV this afternoon )

And then after that, while looking for something else to watch during the adverts, I got to see this advert. IT'S OKAY, LADIES. IT'S OKAY THAT MEN ARE SEXIST AND/OR JERKS. THE MEN OF KFC ARE GOING TO LOOK AFTER US. Alternatively, it's the equivalent of pubs putting "ladies welcome" signs up in their windows. Which is nice.

Weekend

[livejournal.com profile] nerdcakes was here this weekend. She was great. We watched Emmerdale, and went to a very bizarre late-night Simon Amstell gig, and explored the gaping underground chasm vaguely near my flat, and watched Iron Man, and discussed how fandom is just RUBBISH at pairings, and she watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with me, and Arrested Development, and Suburban Shootout, and Dr Who, and today we had a truly memorable experience at the Tales of Robin Hood. It started with a live falcon (which was possibly a different bird), and ended with learning that green dye was actually poisonous back in Robin Hood's day, and in between there was a jaunty song about the rape of the Sabine Women, which it turns out was Sobbin' Women from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I'm not sure if that's better or worse than a cheerful incitement to rape sung by and for a band of outlaws in an Errol Flynn-era film, which is what we assumed, but, y'know, memorable all the same. Rape seems to have been a bit of a theme for the weekend. Along with vomit, and people disappointing their dudes.

[livejournal.com profile] nerdcakes went back today. I hope she gets home alright, and the trains aren't too weird and Sunday-ish. I assume I will hear at some point.

Pairings [livejournal.com profile] nerdcakes and I generally agreed don't get enough fic:

  • The King brothers.

  • Richard Nixon/Henry Kissinger

  • Obadiah Stane/Tony Stark

  • Hiro/Ando

  • Anyone on Suburban Shootout (I hadn't actually watched the Oestrogen Patch episode before. Dude.)

  • Crichton/Scorpius (although I was mostly leading on this one)

  • Arrested Development in general

  • Anyone good

I watched the European Champions League Final (yes I did see the game). I really have to start giving more things the benefit of the doubt. I didn't watch James Dean for years because I thought it was just about leather-jacketed rebels scowling at authority figures, until it turned out he cried. Likewise, no-one told me that football was about mostly failing, lovely legs, and beautiful hugging at the end. Oh God the hugs. Possible spoilers? )

I would have posted last night but I was a bit busy being freaked out by Anthony and Opie thing. Only a day and a half left at work before I get to go to London to see Pirates, and Cecilia. Before that I have to do washing up. Damn it.

Dear people. You may have seen adverts for a 'new' film coming out called 'The Hitcher'. You may have noticed that Sean Bean is in it. This is not in any way a reason to go see this film. Or at least let me come round and show you the original first. Obviously, I don't actually know how good or bad this film is going to be. But. Dude. DON'T SEE IT.

I have not much else to say. I hate adverts. At work I sometimes call Dunelm, and while I'm on hold they advertise at me. It's just pain. And I don't like the one on the radio for the local plastic surgery clinic who can "improve your self-confidence, lower your self-consciousness, increase your smile". And I don't like the one for Trent Windows (or someone), who basically say that they aren't faster or cheaper than other companies, but their work is just better, so just trust them, okay? OH GOD GO AWAY. That's essentially my feeling.

In other news, I have keys to Cecilia's house. Mwuhahaha.
