Well. Just when I think Livejournal can't fuck up any harder, they suddenly do. I've attempted to fix the mess as best I could. I know it's a pale imitation at best. Almost makes me wonder what styles, exactly, they offer in the new format. Sigh.

My parents are going away tomorrow. I'm a little concerned I haven't remembered any of the stuff I'll need for Nine Worlds, and I'll be stuck trying to sort it all out at the last minute on my own, but eh. They have enough to deal with anyway. Much like when I was younger, they booked this year's holiday pretty late, so the only flight they could get was at 6.30am. Which means tomorrow night we've got to have ON and MN to stay over while mum and dad are packing, and they've all got to get up at 3am (around the time I generally go to bed) to leave for the airport at 3.30am. Good luck to them.

Haven't been doing much lately. I went down to that volunteering place, and they finally let me through the door, woo hoo! It was a little nerve-wracking sitting there with all these chat websites open, waiting to see if someone would ask me a question, especially when it'd been 2 months since we actually discussed what I was meant to be doing there and what questions I was able to/trained to answer. But I had a word with another volunteer there, and I think I'm getting the hang of it. It's nice to be there doing stuff at any rate.

And I have been playing Far Cry 3, a game I got a year and a half ago, mostly because it seemed to be a game about shooting and stabbing things. It is indeed a game about shooting and stabbing things, and a pretty good one at that, also pretty beautiful. It's set on a jungle island in the South Pacific, which has been nice in the recent swathe of hot weather, because it meant I got to enjoy summer and beautiful scenery without actually having to stand in sunshine. I'm a little concerned the game is heading for a racist place - or more racist, I suppose - but I wasn't exactly expecting great things when I saw the box. Also I can't tell if the main character is meant to be weirdly emotionless because of shellshock-related reasons or they just randomly made a Main Character without paying attention to the story they'd written for him. But on the whole I'm enjoying it.

Nick tried to go on a crime spree without back-up and emotional support from David. More fool him.

Oh David.

Spoilers for Coronation Street, and mention of suicide )

I went to see Pacific Rim again today, mostly because people were talking about it being considered a flop in America, and when I checked lo and behold, there were only one or two showings a day even now at my local cinema. So I wanted to rewatch it again before there were no showings, or I had to wait months for the DVD. Mostly I noticed all the things people were pointing out in fannish posts, behind the scenes interviews and reviews. Like how much they use orange and blue, especially around Raleigh and Mako. Honestly, it's like "Orange and teal, they do it with zeal: The Movie". Some of it was quite nice though. And you know, complimentary colours, whatever. Also I remembered that I actually really like Mako Mori, and think she is pretty. AND, now I know exactly which Tumblr posts I saw were wrong, lolololol.

Christ. We're flying out on holiday with my nephews in a week. Like, this time next week we'll be on a plane. Friday's trip to Leeds went about as well as could be expected. My mum was obsessed with me getting some cropped trousers, even though the shops refused to provide them, for hours until I pointed out actually I had quite a lot of trousers for holiday-style hot weather, just not England hot weather. But I did get some new trainers, since I've basically worn my other pair out, and some jogging bottoms from New Look I'd been eyeing. In my size and everything, after some wrangling with a checkout woman. Unfortunately, I also bought an umbrella that turned out to be broken when I got it home, so I was hoping to take that back before we went away. But tomorrow I have another appointment with a new mental health service that's picking me up, on Wednesday my mum's having my YN and on Thursday she's having my ON. And then Friday will be our last weekday before we go away. So if I have to actually go back to Leeds and want a day of peace to do it on, they're probably going to be in short supply. They'll probably take it back in my local branch, to be fair.

I've been thinking about nuclear radiation a bit lately. Which may be a bit odd. There was a post I saw on Tumblr saying some pretty horrific things about the Fukushima plant in Japan and it's outcomes, which I have since learned basically came from a regularly debunked 'news' site. So it's just Pretty Bad, not Unimaginably Bad. But between that and playing Fallout 3, a game set in a post-nuclear wasteland, and watching Pacific Rim, which had it's fair share of nuclear plot points, it's sort of got me thinking. It's so weird that it's something we did. Like, at the moment obviously people are really worried about nuclear threats and what would happen if a nuclear-equipped country went to war with anyone. But sometimes I forget that people have actually dropped nuclear bombs. Two on actual inhabited areas. Areas people still inhabit. And so much testing in America, and in the Pacific Ocean itself. And so many accidents that were so horrifying - and yet we still build them, and have nuclear power plants. Everyone's SO worried about it, and yet we have done all that stuff, and continue to do it. I don't know, it boggles my mind sometimes.

I've been catching up with some old Coronation Street, and:

  • When did Anna become sort of evil? And why?

  • Omg David.

  • I love that Nick brought up the fact that Leanne burned down her old restaurant, given that she did LITERALLY AND DELIBERATELY BURN IT DOWN, because it was doing badly. Her reaction: affronted. Fucking Leanne.

  • I hope that at some point David offers Nick comfort sex for the many troubles he is suffering from. It seems perfect, and also unlikely to be something they do in the storyline now, after yesterday's episode.

Coronation Street:

NICK IS SOME KIND OF GENIUS.

And Steve would obviously get Tracy sent back to jail if he only could, if she only would.

Further notes on Pacific Rim:

  • Stacker Pentecost is an amazing name, but slightly less impressive if you (vaguely) knew a man in real life called Lazarus Baptiste. He was a computer engineer. The computer engineer you would probably want turning up if the world was ending.

  • I get that Mako and Raleigh were the main characters, and the canonical semi-romantic couple. But Mako is a kind of shark, and Raleigh is a kind of bike, so if you say you want Mako/Raleigh you're just saying you want shark-bike in funny language, and I never stop being confused by it.

Other things I have been doing in my life, apart from watching Emmerdale:

  • Watching Coronation Street. The thing I love most about David's current court case/possible epilepsy storyline - aside from watching David freak out and worry and pass out occasionally - is that he's having massive friction with his mum over it, he's bonding with his gran because she's on his side and believed him all the way through, and his mum and gran are having massive friction over it...and his brother Nick, who lives on the street, is nowhere to be seen. I don't think I've seen David have a single scene with him since it all started. At one point someone asked Nick how David was, before they found out it might be epilepsy, and he said David was in bits over it all. That was it. He doesn't seem to care if his brother tried to kill his best friend, if his brother was about to get charged and possibly sent down for attempted murder, or if his brother has epilepsy or possibly something worse, like a brain tumour. It's kind of amazing.

This paragraph is about Maria and a bit of Tony/Maria )

It's Halloween tomorrow, and it's seeming more and more likely that Coronation Street aren't going to make me that 'Ghosts of dead characters haunting people on the street' episode I wanted. Sigh.

  • I have been watching Hollyoaks and Hollyoaks Later, and I didn't really want to watch Hollyoaks Later because I don't even love Hollyoaks that much and it sounded like it was going to be all about footballers and possibly have a gang rape in it. But then it turned out that Mitzeee, who is a character I've heard good things about and quite liked when she was onscreen and hasn't been onscreen much lately, was going to be in it, so I tried to watch it when I could. Happily, there wasn't a gang rape, and especially since Mitzeee seemed slightly in danger of being involved, she wasn't gang raped. But oh my God, dudes. She's - so beautiful, I'm actually finding it hard to look at her sometimes. Not in the way I used to be with Michael Bluth, where I actually had to look away from the screen, but where I find myself focusing on just one part of her face, like her hair or her eyes or her teeth. She has AMAZING teeth. And I don't even care about teeth. This is her:

Isn't she amazing? And she has a beautiful accent. And, unless I'm massively lowering my standards because I'm watching Hollyoaks, she can act. I think I'm a little bit in love with her. Oh my god.

  • I have been to two Halloween parties in the last two days, with my nephews. They put on some quite nice dos for Halloween in my home town, and the kids seemed to be enjoying themselves. So hurrah.

  • I'm kind of irritated with my dad at the moment, because he shut the car door on my back while I was trying to strap my oldest nephew into his seat tonight. After, I thought, huffing about having to take my youngest nephew over to the side of the car where his seat was, rather than just putting him in the back and leaving him there. And then he didn't even bother to strap him in. But I'm sure that irritation will pass. Ow.

  • I saw the film RED/R.E.D. Spoilers, some pretty big )

  • Other things probably, but I have to go and watch Casualty now.
