They are doing some genuinely weird stuff on Celebrity Big Brother at the moment. My mum watches it and I caught bits of it as I was walking to and fro - they've had one celebrity become the 'Dictator' of the house, complete with weird big hat and sunglasses, and they've had a bunch of the other housemates organise a 'revolution' against him. Wasn't it just this year or last year that people in Libya revolted against Gadaffi, and he ended up dying? Also, the housemate they picked to become the Dictator is the only one, beside the Americans, with a noticeably foreign accent. Make of that what you will.

But anyway. What I actually wanted to post about were two-second ships. And by two-second ships, I don't mean the ships you love for about two seconds. No, that bearable, because it only lasts about two seconds. The ones I'm talking about are the ships you have based - relatively - on about two seconds of canon. AND YET YOU LOVE THEM BEYOND WORDS. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person that feels like this. Sometimes I feel like it's what fandom is built on. But anyway.

I suppose what I really mean are those scenes in a TV show or book or whatever that are so suddenly, unbearably slashy that you suddenly take interest in a pairing, even though nothing else really appeals. The main examples I can think of from my own fannish history usually occur when there is a character in a fandom that I really love, but up to that point they've not had any obvious boyfriend (or girlfriend). EVEN THOUGH THEY DESERVE ONE. And then suddenly things get slashy with Background Character No. 8. However, I can only think of two examples from my own history, so chances are even I've broken that rule at some point in the past.

One of those examples was from Psychoville. I have no idea how many people have watched Psychoville, or want to, but in any case Season Two spoilers ahead. In season 2, they introduced a new character, played by Reece Shearsmith, who I've had a crush on since early League Of Gentlemen days. This new character was a librarian who saw visions of an evil clown sort of thing that ordered him to keep everything neat and ordered (in traditional League Of Gentlemen fashion). Most of his storyline involved a lost library book, and his increasingly obsessive and violent attempts to get it back. Then in one of the later episodes, he got caught by the police. And because of his past involvement with the main plot, he ended up being interviewed by this detective that WE knew was actually a psychopath murdering people on the whims of a terrifying company, because of their involvement with the main plotline. And they have this scene where the detective tries to get information out of the librarian by waving the no longer missing library book in front of him, and then spilling things on it, and finally threatening to burn it. The parts that hadn't had things spilled on them, I guess. And the librarian finally broke, and the detective put the book down so he could as him questions. And the librarian tried to grab the book reassuringly, and the detective just held it flat and gave him this look. And I couldn't. I JUST COULDN'T. That is the only scene they had together, and yet it remains INDELIBLY BURNED ON MY BRAIN.

The other major one I have is a pairing from Death Valley. I'm not going to go into details about that, because I still hold out hope someone else will watch Death Valley, and I'm not going to spoiler people for it. But yes. Essentially, I had a favourite character (who was occasionally rubbish), he had no obvious boyfriend, he suddenly got one and had about three scenes with him. AND I SHIPPED IT LIKE BURNING. I SHIPPED IT FOREVER.

It genuinely appalls and upsets me, even now, that there is no fic for these pairings. EVEN THOUGH THE SHOWS DIDN'T REALLY HAVE MUCH OF A FANDOM. EVEN THOUGH THEY ONLY HAD A FEW AND IN ONE CASE ONE SCENE TOGETHER. EVEN THOUGH I WAS ESSENTIALLY SPOILED WITH PETER SCHIBETTA/ADEBISI FIC. And then I think 'well, of course there's no fic for them'. And then I think about it again and think 'but why isn't there any fic for them???'.

So yes. Two-second pairings. Two seconds is all it takes apparently. They are the worst, because you can't even really defend them. Not even to yourself. BUT THERE SHOULD BE FIC FOR THEM sdfdjkhfdjksnx.

Mum and I and my ON and MN are meant to be going to a pantomime tomorrow night at 7 o'clock. Which, according to the local weather forecast, is exactly when the blizzards are supposed to hit us. We'll see how that goes.

I spent most of the rest of yesterday putting some music on my new mp3 player. And frankly, it's good that I set aside a day for it, because it took me about that long to even put a bunch of music I wanted on my computer, never mind on the player. I forgot how long it takes to rip things, sometimes. Well, technically it took me up until Coronation Street was on anyway, and I went down for the soaps/Case Histories/Psychoville portion of the night.

I had a hard time believing all the CDs I wanted to rip would even fit on my computer, never mind on my MP3 player. But they totally did. Except that my computer seems to have a weird aversion to playing Tori Amos CDs, or even recognising them as discs. I don't know what it is. A while ago I tried to rip my Tales of A Librarian CD, and it wouldn't play it, so I just figured there was something wrong with the disc. But yesterday I decided to try it again, and it still wouldn't have it, and then I decided to rip some of the songs I wanted from a few other Tori Amos albums I've got but haven't listened to all the way through yet, and it wouldn't have them either. But I tried ripping my old Scarlet's Walk CD that I've had for a few years, and that went fine. I don't know. It has a very specific aversion to some Tori Amos, it seems.

Anyway, my MP3 player conundrums continued when I spent quite a while putting a load of music from my Windows Media Player to sync to the player, it was easily about half an hour, maybe up to an hour. Then I unplugged the player and went to look what music was on it, and could only find the MP3 files I'd copied over from my downloads files. And THEN I realised that putting the songs from my Windows Media Player TO sync only meant putting them in a list, and I had to press another button to actually sync them and copy them over. So I had to do that all again. I was hoping to be finished with it before midnight, but it took me a bit over that, in the end.

And THEN I finally had my music on my MP3 player, and all I had to do was figure out how to use it. Which was not the easiest thing in the world. The tiny, one-page instruction guide turned out to be some help, with this, but in the end, only the fact that it said so on the back of the MP3 player box kept me believing that there WAS indeed a shuffle function, and a volume control. Eventually I found them. And now I have a working MP3 player! And since turning the shake function off, I have an MP3 player that doesn't skip songs when I move it the wrong way! All I need now is a case thing for it so it doesn't get scratched, and I am golden.

The main problem I have with it at the moment is that the battery apparently only last for up to 5.5 hours, I'm pretty sure my previous MP3 players lasted longer than that. But I can probably deal with it. And it's probably better for me to not use it all the time anyway.

Also I watched a bunch of programmes last night. The round up:

  • On Hollyoaks Mitzeee wore an amazing white toga-style dress, and literally everyone tore her to shreds when they saw her, instead of falling to their knees due to her obvious superiority.

  • On Coronation Street, Tiny spoiler for last night ).

  • I watched Case Histories, it was very good, I quite like Jackson Brody.

  • And we had the Psychoville finale. Spoilers )

So. I had a 'courtesy call' from the Department for Work and Pensions this morning. I have been decided to be capable of some forms of work. How I feel about that )

Anyway. Some happier things include: Slight spoilers for Coronation Street from Friday ). I really liked Scott and Bailey last night, even though sort of spoilers ). And a comedy email newsletter I have been getting for a bit basically justified all the months I have been getting it today, by informing me that the Psychoville finale is on tonight, not on Thursday. I'm really enjoying Psychoville at the moment, especially last week's episode, so I'm glad to have heard about that (although it was on series record anyway, it turned out).

Also, is it my imagination, or did Horrible Histories repeat a sketch they'd already done in Friday's episode? The one with Queen Elizabeth? I'm really sure I'd seen that before, down to being able to predict what happened up to the end of the sketch. Either they've repeated it, I saw some sort of preview somewhere, or I HAVE THE POWER TO SEE THE FUTURE. That's all I can think of.

Also, is it my imagination, or are there tons and tons of new dramas, and detective dramas, coming out at the moment? Maybe I've just not been very into the genre before, and this happens every spring, but my god. There are tons on, and I'm having trouble watching all the ones I like the look of. I watched Vera all the way through, and I would have liked to watch the Shadow Line, but I just don't have the mental room for it alongside everything else I watch. I was sort of interested in Case Sensitive, but again not enough to remember to watch it alongside everything else I was watching. I missed Exile with John Simm as well. I'm watching Scott and Bailey at the moment, have started watching Case Histories, I think new Luther is starting this week, and according to the itv drama preview, they have a couple of new shows on the way, including a new series of Single-Handed. Now, I'm pretty happy about there being a new series of Single-Handed, but I hope at least some of the other series' finish before I start watching that. Seriously. Is it just me, or is this a thing this spring?

I did quite enjoy Case Histories, though. Spoilers )

Oh, television did things tonight.

Coronation Street )

Scott and Bailey )

There's other TV I've been watching. PSYCHOVILLE IS BACK. It has been back for about three weeks now, it's more than halfway over I think. But it makes me really happy. Especially when Mr Jelly's in it. And really loves that old woman. And David and his mum are in it. Any of them could die any episode now. But at the moment they're not dead, and they're making me quite happy.

I can't think of anything else now. Mostly I'm all caught up with Hollyoaks now and watching it most days, and reading welovehollyoaks.com and loving Brendan Brady. And Seth Costello. And Ste Hay. And Jacqui. And Theresa, sort of. And Mitzeee. Well, lots of people really. Hollyoaks is still quite shit, in many ways, but I'm still quite enjoying it at the moment.

I have also been to the cinema twice in the past few weeks, after not going at all for nearly four months. I have a lot of thoughts about both films, but not really enough understanding of what I really mean to make big posts about them. I saw Attack The Block and really enjoyed it, I think in terms of race it wasn't perfect but it could have been a LOT worse. And I saw Blitz, which. Well. When I first heard about it, it sounded like a perfectly decent little chase/cat-and-mouse thriller with Jason Statham. And then I found out that Paddy Considine was in it as a gay cop, and I was pretty much sold. Then I found out that Stuart from Queer As Folk was in it, as the psycho, and apparently really good. So I was quite looking forward to it. But I didn't realise Vague spoilers for the general tone of the film ). Paddy Considine was still pretty good in it, though, even though I sometimes felt like they had him dressed a bit oddly. And I really liked Zawe Ashton as a fellow police officer in it, who I've just found out from imdb was both Jessica from Misfits, and Sally Donovan from Sherlock. I didn't even realise they were played by the same person. I'm rubbish sometimes. But yeah, anyway. I saw both of them. And enjoyed them to varying degrees.

In other news, my terrible week last week didn't exactly go off without a hitch. There was a bit of family drama, which I may post about later. But I'm glad it's over, anyway. I'm looking forward to this week more than I was to last week. Although I still haven't heard from the DWP about my claim for Incapacity benefit. Gulp.

In other other news, apparently I'm going to Prague in three weeks. Eek.
