My sister has gone to Blackpool for the night for her friend's birthday, so we're currently trying to coax my YN to sleeping here for the night, which he's never done before. So we'll see how that goes.

My computer building has hit a slight snag, in that I asked my dad if there was any chance I could get my last £1000 back that they borrowed from me. The build I'm looking at is about a grand, and my mum recently renewed her passport and started talking about how she and dad might book a holiday soon, and I was like '......?...'. I mean, they deserve a holiday. But I really thought they would be paying me back the money they borrowed from me as soon as they reasonably could. And if I take another grand out of my ISA, it's going to start getting to the point where I can't replace it within this tax year, because of ISA rules and everything. So I said to dad it would be easier if I could just use the £1000 of mine that's already out. He agreed, though, and he's going to give me the money. But I asked today, and he said he'd need another week at least to get it to me. So...I can't really do anything until I have the money, so I can buy the parts. So nothing will be happening for at least a week. I will have to stick with my netbook. Which is lovely, but occasionally lags when I try to type sentences too fast, and tends to stop and start when playing Youtube videos. Hmm.

Also, I noticed that the internet went down this morning. That was interesting.

ETA: My nephew has agreed to stay for the night. Once again, we'll see how this goes.

I have my tiny wee netbook on the desk where my laptop used to be, and it's so tiny, I am caught between the cuteness and the ridiculousness. But mostly it's just a feeling that I love my netbook. I think it has basically paid for itself at this point. Keyboards are so good.

I have gotten a guide for building a PC in the price range I want though, and I went to my local computer store and asked them to give the parts in it a once-over, and I've asked my dad about maybe getting some of my money back to pay for it with, rather than taking any more out of my ISA and maybe not being able to pay it back this tax year. So - I'm getting on with that, even though I'm a little apprehensive about it. The guy at my games store was giving me tips about installing the processor, and he was like "you know the gold pins? And the gold triangle in the corner?". And I was like "...no." But I'm sure it will all work out eventually. And I can play games, hurrah! Hopefully it won't take too long. At the moment I'm mostly a little sad about having to go through Halloween without playing my custom Scary Soundtrack that I created last year. It's all on the hard drive. And possibly (hopefully) on my backup external hard drive. Like so many other things. Fingers crossed.

One thing I have learned about my netbook is that hotmail's stupid setup doesn't love it resolution enough to actually, really, let me read emails on it. Which is a shame, because that's the account I'm meant to be using to work out a problem with my references at my new job. Hopefully it won't be too much of a problem. But fuck Microsoft, what the fuck? Fix your shit. And now to find out how it handles playing 60fps videos on Youtube. Hopefully 'well'.

My laptop finally died. Well - the LAPTOP seems to be working fine, but the screen is showing nothing but black. Not exactly a surprise at this point. I'm on my netbook at the moment, and will be for the forseeable. While I attempt to quickly research how to build a gaming pc, and organise the start of my job in a week and a half. But if I seem a little incommunicado for a while, that will be why.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
Also they're going to start putting ads on Adblocker. The Youtubers I watch who produce content for 'free' are thrilled about the irony of this, but it's pretty annoying.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
I don't know why my computer is slow forever. But between lack of money and being baffled, I might not have a new PC anytime soon.

We've got an electrical storm flashing disco lights across the sky where we are. No rain, no thunder, but on just one side of the house there's sheet lightning flashing across the sky once every few minutes. It's pretty awesome.

Anyway. In what I'm sure is more interesting news than my job-hunt, I decided the computer that the guy in my computer games' shop's mum was selling wasn't really for me. I started looking at some of the new games coming out that I wasn't even paying attention to, because I didn't have a machine that could play them, and a lot of them need a much more powerful processor. His mum's only had Intel i3, which is what my laptop actually has at the moment. So I said thanks but no, and that I'd have to go to PC World instead, and he said you were generally better off and saved more money by building your own. So...I'm thinking about it. If it's cheaper, I may as well. It's a lot easier to get parts than I thought, Amazon literally sells them off individually, but none of the sites I've seen so far in my search for 'how to build a gaming PC' actually tell you how to build a gaming PC. It's just 'pitfalls for the beginner to avoid', not literally how the nuts and bolts screw together. So I'm continuing to search. Because I'm a fool who always wants to go big or go home, I have my heart set on an Intel i7 processor. The rest of the parts are to be confirmed, i.e. whatever some site tells me are the best ones. A site like techradar or pcgamer though. I'm not a total mug.

Well. My laptop completely died a couple of hours ago. I was watching a Youtube video, tried to skip back a few seconds, and it completely froze, then went black, then went black and red, then went black, then went black and red. I tried to use Crtl-Alt-Del, and it went white with little stripes of red and green. So I crashed it, then when I turned it back on the screen just stayed black, and then after about 30 seconds the computer crashed itself. I switched it back on again, and it stayed on, but the screen just stayed black.

So I basically gave up on it for a bit, but then I switched it off completely, left it off for about half an hour, and tried it again, and now it's currently working. So I took this opportunity to back up everything I have written or saved to the computer recently and want to keep, clear my browsing history, and clear my google search history. Just in case...just in case anyone goes rooting around in my hard drive for repair reasons, or refurbishment reasons. Some things are private, world. But I think it's probably better to consider the laptop only temporarily functioning, and start looking for a new computer soon. Not that I can hugely afford it at the moment, but. Needs must.

My Windows 10 Start menu is 'suggesting' Facebook to me. Telling me it's 'free' and giving it a star rating.

This is hell.

My parents are coming back tonight. Mum claims they'll be home around 2am, which is generally after I go to bed, but generally before I go to sleep. So I've decided to wait up for them. I've really enjoyed having the house to myself - really quite enjoyed it - but I have also been sleeping in a lot and eating more than I usually do (partly due to having a rubbish, busy week last week, but still). So maybe it's time for them to come back home.

I generally scan my computer for viruses before I do anything, even signing an e-petition just in case there's malware. Over the last few days, every time I have scanned it it says it's found and removed the same virus. One time I did a scan, then did a scan again just to be sure, and literally fifteen minutes later it was also like 'found this virus, you're welcome'. Which makes me think it's NOT getting rid of the virus. And also makes me paranoid about doing anything personal on my computer. I want to put some money on my Playstation account and buy a vita game. Oh.

Laptop woes

My laptop spontaneously died last night. I was watching a Youtube video, tried to move it back a few minutes, and my whole laptop crashed. So I figured it was finally time to format my external hard drive and back everything up again. I forgot exactly how long it takes to format it, so I stayed up late last night then had to leave it running all night anyway. And now I'm remembering how long it takes to copy all the files over. Which I have to do without a mouse, because my external hard drive needs two USB slots, and I only have the two. Sigh.

A part of me would just like to replace the laptop, but a) that's expensive, and b) I may have convinced myself it's old and tired when actually I've just let it get dusty. And maybe I just want some up-to-date specs so I can play more PC games on it. I mean, it does struggle sometimes just to load webpages, but sometimes it runs completely fine, so I can't be sure it's not just Windows downloading updates and slowing everything down itself. I've tried to turn off Windows updates, but sometimes that doesn't seem to make much difference.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
So, Windows just crashed my Flash plugin to close down a video I was watching, closed my browser window, and then shut down my computer, without any warning that I saw, in order to configure some new updates.

What a subtle and unobtrusive way to deal with updates. WELL DONE, Microsoft.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
Last night Dragon Age crashed because of an error, and I didn't think much of it, but today when I turned it back on as it was loading up the menu it said "Save data corrupted, and could not be retrieved" and for a minute I thought I was going to have to replay the first 40 hours again.

It turned out I did not, it was just that I couldn't have the 'Continue' option so it had to reload the menu. Still fucking terrifying though.

In other news I am on my period and nearly out of Mefenamic Acid. I noticed on Friday, too late to get my prescription refilled before Monday. I actually have enough to last me till then, since I can't have more than 3 a day, and I had cramps yesterday anyway, despite taking a pill. But it was a slightly more stressful day than it needed to be, which was a shame.

I also got my DBS check back from - wherever that comes from. So I can call the volunteering place and tell them I'm ready to start, pretty much. I sort of forgot that's going to mean I have to start getting to a place for work for 9am every other Saturday. Oh well, hopefully I will rise gracefully to that challenge.

The would have been the title of my last post, if I'd watched the episode of Futurama I saw before posting it instead of after.

Did a random scan of my computer today, and it found some malware. I do scans all the time and they almost never find anything, so I'm a little worried that malware/adware from before is still lurking around. Plus my laptop was running hella slow yesterday, although I did have a few youtube videos open at the time. Still. My antivirus software suggests running Windows in Safe Mode and scanning again - after a number of experiments I have determined I don't know how to restart Windows in Safe Mode on my laptop. Pressing F8 didn't seem to ever do anything, and there was nothing helpful in my Samsung Recovery software either. The other option suggested is restoring to a previous version of the hard drive, which seems a little drastic since I don't know if anything's actually wrong.

Q: If you think you might have a virus on your computer, are you safe to back up any files? Like if it's just a word document and it looks uncorrupted is it probably safe, or are you risking just spreading the virus to other machines? I have some writing I'd rather not lose in restoring a previous copy of the hard drive, if I don't have to.

The malware I got yesterday was adware, and even after I uninstalled it I still had a few adverts popping up on my Google results. I don't know if that means it's still lurking about somewhere, or it just messed with my Adblock plugin. I checked the Adblock settings and apparently it was allowing 'unintrusive advertising' - I changed that pretty sharply. But I still don't know if it's on my machine, gathering data I input. Including this blog entry. Apaprently it's not too harmful, it only takes stuff to target you with ads. But still.

Also, FYI, if 'Browser Champion' pops up on your toolbar telling you it's 'protecting your machine!' - it isn't.

I know there are a lot of people right now who think that technology is taking over our lives and keeping us separate from real life. But honestly, I don't think we're going to have a problem until technology works well enough that it doesn't make you want to constantly break it into tiny pieces with your bare hands.

For example, right now I'm having to weigh up the fact that 8tracks is really convenient for making online playlists, next to the fact that sometimes - frequently - it just substitutes entire tracks for completely different ones it's found on Soundcloud. Something to do with reducing the bandwidth for the site apparently, and there's an option to turn it off. But that option apparently doesn't always work. I wouldn't mind, but when it's a track I got off an album that I bought, full price, ripped myself and converted to an MP3 myself, I feel like it should I don't know, work. And not be replaced with A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SONG, NOT EVEN A REMIX, YOU GOT THE LADY GAGA PART RIGHT BUT NOT EVERYTHING ELSE, WHAT THE FUCK 8TRACKS.

Ahem. And then there's my Playstation 4. I have Minecraft for the PS3, and apparently when you have that it's super cheap to get the PS4 version. So I figured why not? When I went to the Playstation Store it was in fact free, which seemed odd, but there was no other option to get it, so I downloaded it, and bought a couple of cheap add-on packs to go with it. But now when I start Minecraft on the PS4, it will only let me use the tutorial, I can't play the actual game. There's a button to 'Unlock the Full Game' - they offer me that button very often - but when I click it it just takes me to the Playstation 4 Minecraft page, which says I've already downloaded the game. I've contacted Sony about this, and they're "oh yes, lol that's a glitch. Just delete EVERY SCRAP OF EVIDENCE MINECRAFT EVER EXISTED from your PS4 and download it again, it should be fine". I have deleted the game and re-downloaded it twice, and it still won't let me do anything but use the tutorial. If I'm supposed to delete those add-on packs, then I can't see a single option anywhere that will let me do that. Or where I should go to re-download them - having paid for them - if I successfully delete everything and then get the game working. adlkjaskldfjasklfjskl.

Also, in non-technological news, they're apparently releasing the new Dragon Age game in America three days earlier than in the UK, so I'm going to have to avoid Tumblr until then. And probably for a while after then, if I don't want to be spoiled.

And just so you all know, between playing as Handsome Jack in Borderlands (sort of), picking up GTA 5 today and having the new Dragon Age game come out on Friday, I might not be - around. So much. For a few months. Or nine. I'm either playing games, or I have choked on electronics from trying to eat my PS4 in a carefully considered protest. So yeah. I mean, I'll probably be back next week to talk about Gotham. But if I'm not.

I was away over the weekend and now my laptop is backing itself up forever.

I was away over the weekend. I went to see [livejournal.com profile] jekesta, [livejournal.com profile] slemslempike and [livejournal.com profile] alicamel, it was brilliant. I watched Coronation Street with someone who truly appreciates it and I watched the first few episodes of The Invisible Man, and learned exactly how quickly a man could get over the death of his brother. Also little Rita was there to lick me forever. It was great.

I'm so tired. I don't know why, I had some VAGUELY early mornings over the weekend, and today on the train I had a moment of dizziness that instead of happening and then going away, lasted for about thirty seconds. While I was sitting still and the train was sitting still. I'm going to get some sleep tonight and hope it goes away. I'm considering just getting up around 10am from now on though, rather than about 12, and letting my body get used to it. I'm getting kind of sick of this now.

I need to sign up for Dragon Age Keep and see if I can pre-order Dragon Age: Inquisition at my local games store and see if I can pre-order Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel at my local games store. Also I should probably email my volunteering dude and see if he's back in the office yet, and maybe wants me to come in soon. For some forewarning.

I hate the Dragon Age prequel novel and want it to die and want Maric to die and want Katriel to die (I think I'll get my wish with her), kind of want Rowan to die (next book) and kind of want Loghain to die. I really wanted to like it because I do think Loghain is an interesting villain and wanted his backstory, but. No. At this point I think I'd prefer a really dry recounting of all the Fereldan battles and a genealogy of all the noble houses to the endless double love triangles. At least that would have some facts I can work with.

After leaving the External Hard Drive to format overnight, and spending the morning copying files over with no mouse, my computer is now backed up and can BSOD to its heart's content. I need a USB flash drive, is mostly what I've realised. But at least it gave me a push to finally delete all my old porn links, just in case it needs to go get repaired somewhere soon. Sigh.
girlofprey: (R for raygun)
ANOTHER Blue Screen Of Death, right as I was in the middle of a big format of my External Hard Drive so I could back my files up anew, which had already unexpectedly taken 4 hours and was only halfway through, that's just great, computer, that's just absolutely superb.

I am concerned that I might have blocked a plug-in and that's what's making my computer crash. Yesterday as I was clicking away from a Youtube page I clicked on a 'plug-in' symbol in the address bar, and it said something about blocking it. I didn't select anything though, I just clicked away from it, thinking 'oh I clicked the wrong thing'. But now that's all I can think of that might have caused a problem, my computer crashed last night when I put on a random Youtube video and then tonight when I opened my Tumblr Dashboard - which I'd already had open earlier today. I have no idea how to check for that problem though, or if that would even cause what's happening now, or how to fix it. Alternatively my computer is just falling apart. Amazing.

Firefox has updated itself, and it no longer lets you put a bookmarked page into a particular folder in one go. It puts it into 'Unsorted Bookmarks', and you have to draaaaag it out of there and into the right folder, which might be many scrolls down the page. I don't understand why they have done this or why they would do this or why they haven't emailed us all profusely apologising yet.

Borderlands 2, spoilers for the Wildlife Exploitation Preserve mission )

Have I mentioned to you all that my house is slowly breaking at the moment? For some mysterious reason our internet only works on a some of our computers, and not any of the new ones, and a month or so ago our bath started leaking slightly through the kitchen ceiling, and hasn't been fixed since. Well, it was briefly, but my dad used too much sealant and the new plughole sat a little too far above the bottom of the bathtub for him to be happy with it, so he took it out again. Since then, a light in the bathroom went, and when dad was fixing it he stepped too hard off a ladder and broke the bathroom scales, and then the shower in the bathroom broke for no apparent reason. So we're currently without a shower or bath. It's not a problem for me with my laidback hygiene routine, but apparently my mum's been having to wash her feet in the sink. Hopefully the bath'll get fixed this weekend. If not, I don't know what we're going to do, other than go feral.

Meanwhile though I finally set up my Playstation 4 last week, mostly just to check it worked. Happily, it turns out the PS4 connects to the nearest TV with a HDMI cable, while the PS3 connects with SCART leads, so I won't have to be messing around with the back of the TV to change over from one to the other. They just have to share a double plugsocket with each other and the TV plug. But I don't need the PS4 too much at the moment. It doesn't connect to the internet, that I have noticed, but I've decided not to bug my dad about it, since even his brand new PC doesn't at the moment. Also I asked him to take out the VCR machine we have in the room since I don't use it, and it, the PS3 and the PS4 are all stacked on top of each other at the moment, but - I'm not going to ask about it for a bit.

I have CBT tomorrow, and I have to put some more situations and rituals on my 'Hierarchy of Anxiety'. I also have period pains. Life is hard.

So. I went to the comic convention. Paul Cornell wasn't there, or if he was he was SHIELDED FROM MY EYES. I did have to get up at eight though, which basically left me feeling a bit not-real all day. I decided to eat some lunch before I tried spending any money, which was probably wise. I still spent loads though. But Thought Bubble is only once a year and my arrears have just come through, so eh.

When I got there this morning I was all proud because I'd booked my ticket in advance and could walk past the queue going all the way around the block and just walk in. Then I learned that the queue was FOR people who'd booked in advance, to have their paperwork checked, since everyone had apparently had the same idea. So I had to walk all the way back again. At least it was quick. And I don't know if this is a new thing or I just never really noticed before, but it was a little annoying how a big part of the first aisle was taken up by the major comics publishers. I know it's a comic convention and they're the big suppliers, but I've always seen Thought Bubble advertised mostly as a Small Press and Indie Convention. So to have the first set of stalls taken up with books you could buy in any comic book shop or on Amazon at any time was a little irritating, really. They used to just have stalls somewhere in the middle of the showroom, or on the end of each aisle, so people who were just interested in major titles or in looking for back issues could go there while everyone else wandered around with the indie creators. I don't know, I did see some - I don't know, "well-funded" - titles I'd never seen before, but...it seemed to not really be in the spirit of the convention.

But it was good. I had my usual problem of not being able to talk to the people on the stalls, as though I am literally just going "No, I don't want to speak to the ARTIST, I just want to see the PRODUCTS". But most people were pretty nice about it, and I actually had a chat with one writer about her having come up from Milton Keynes. Huzzah. And I got some art, for the first time ever. Two £5 prints, one of which is a picture of Mako Mori drawn by Nich Angell. You don't get that every day.

Steam, however, continues to irritate me. And Adobe Flash Player - Adobe Flash Player won't let me update the Adobe Flash Player. When it gives me a little notice about a new version being out, I go to download it, go to a nice page claiming to be Step 1 of 3, click the "Update Now" button, and it just sends me to Adobe.com. Is anyone else having this problem? I don't know what to do if it continues. I can still play videos and animations NOW, but in a few updates time I probably won't, and if it still won't let me update it then what? When I go to the Adobe support page it just tells me to check if I have the latest version of Flash Player, and when I click the link it just sends me to the page that eventually sends me to Adobe.com again. I can't even see an address to email them at. I'm starting to think I'm going to have switch my updating options to "Yes, update whatever you like whenever you like, it's your computer not mine".

And my MN is apparently about an inch away from being expelled from school. That's the 5 year old. Yesterday mum and I had to go pick him up from his school because he was kicking off and messing about so much his teacher couldn't handle him, or have him disrupting the lessons any longer. And I don't always hear a lot about it, but this is an ongoing thing, he's had a special teacher sort of sitting with him and trying to keep him focused for months now. They've mentioned getting him a mental health appointment, but so far neither the school nor my sister have done anything about it. For now we'll have to wait and see what happens on Monday, I guess.
