And things

Mostly I've been having very good taste lately. In that everything, almost everything, I want and pick up and then put back down again until I've proved it's not just a wild impulse, is gone by the time I go back to get it. I saw a necklace in a local art gallery that I really really liked, and I went literally the day my parents came up with my birthday money, straight after that play we went to see, and they'd sold it that morning. I've got in touch with the woman who made it actually, who's based in Nottingham, and she's kindly agreed to make another like it, and she said it would take about a week depending on how long it would take to source the materials. It has now been about three weeks. But oh well.

Cornwall was sold out. There was another holiday for the same weekend, but it was only two nights, which means two days of travelling and one day of holiday, which was slightly more expensive. So no. The next holiday they had similar was in June, when they will no longer be having the special thing with the bulbs flowering at the Eden Project. I told myself that I wasn't going to (finally) get Castle, Waiting from the comic book store to cheer myself up about this, because I wanted to get it on its own merits. When I went back the next day, they'd just sold out, and it would be another week before it might be back in stock. Another week was Thursday, and they didn't have it, so now I should wait until next Thursday, or the Thursday after that. Castle, Waiting is becoming quite apt. I was going to get Angela Carter's Book of Fairytales last night, but was already buying something else, so didn't want to splash out too much. When I went back today, it had sold out. Another week before the new order gets in. Also there are no Flamenco classes in Nottingham, an interest in which was the main thing I took away from Happy-Go-Lucky. Hmph.

But the mail is still working, and what I do have, as of Wednesday, is the DVD of the John Simm version of Crime and Punishment. Not released in the UK, but released in the Netherlands. The front is all in English, and the back is almost all in Dutch. I love it a lot. And I was so right to love John Simm's Raskolnikov. He wanders around staring at things. He has the most beautiful messy hair I've ever seen. He shouts in police stations then faints. He is great.

I also got the first series of Peep Show because it was £4.

Spoilers up to 1.3 )

And stuff. I still have to buy flat shoes and two new pairs of jeans before the gig in two weeks' time. Hmmph.

At uni. Have to do What's On guide for the radio for tonight. Nothing is on. This is a problem. I am annoyed. But yay, have Marks and Spencer's chocolate buttons. All is not lost.

Still MAJORLY crushing on the dance thing I saw. Slight madness, verbal incontinence, and dubious morality down yar )

Mum apparently did not get my mother's day card, even yesterday, which I sent on Friday by first-class post. This makes me worry for my Connotations letter. Is the post playing up again? Or does it hate me? I shall have to wait in fear for packages or e-mails or whatever the hell they send until they send them :(

But eeee, new icon! R is for Raygun. And also red. And also foxy ladies with Rayguns apparently. And also Rachael, which is the most important thing omg.

Finished Crime and Punishment! ::blows lone party-popper:: After 2 years of reading the damn thing. But had seen the TV adaption, so it was not really suspenseful for me. Raskolnikov continues to be loved, and omg they sent him to Siberia for not admitting he was gay, until he felt to his knees and cried about loving men like Sonya loves Dunya? This is cruel punishment indeed. Can we get that law passed here...?

And oooh, Eastenders tonight. Night of Andy's funeral when all the gay gay men who did sex with him, but secretly, afterwards only Pat and johnny Allen will turn up, and then Pat will yell with love for him :). Hehe, yay - my flatmate so totally sees the Johnny/Stacey too, and is all freaked out by it. I lord my non-squickedness over her like jam. Yes. But Andy :(. I will mourn at your grave, Andy! I will mourn!

Mmm, yes. It turns out I do still like Creme Egg McFlurries :)

Went into town yesterday on a DVD hunt, but could not find Sea of Souls Series 2 anywhere. According to Amazon.com, the release date has been pushed back to April 25th. This is annoying. However, it will make the 'Hero or Oldboy or Sea of Souls?' question slightly easier to figure out.

Having watched the 100 Greatest Cartoons on Sunday though, I now have the urge to buy Family Guy DVDs. And Belleville Rendevous. And Amelie SE is only £10 in Nottingham's marvellous little independent HMV, 'Fopp'. And the Prisoner complete box set is all white and shiny. Sigh.

It is times like these I wish there were things in the world just for me. A Rachael Sale in HMV. Buy any 5 of the DVDs Rachael wants for £30! All the CDs Rachael wants, half-price! And a magazine. A magazine just for me, that keeps me up to date on all the issues that matter to the Rachael of today. That tell me about sudden delays in DVD release dates, for example. And gives reviews of 'The Chorus' more than 2 stars (damn you, Total Film! I trusted you!). This would make life much easier.

However, it is March! Month of my birth! And there is vague sunshine. And the daffodils are poking through. And I am almost finished with Crime and Punishment, after two years. So there is happiness. Roll on summer.

...but much nicer things happened to me over the weekend. I went shopping on Friday, and actually managed to buy a new pair of smart black trousers, after about four years of wearing my sister's hand-me-downs, which continue to be and look fine, but they make my mother cry. But got lovely new ones in River Island, for only £20! And then a pair of lovely smart-casual trousers, which a snaky green belt, for only £25. And a lovely new pair of sunglasses, which actually look nice on me. It is very clear to me now that River Island is a thing of beauty and a joy forever, and should be treasured by everyone. Yes.

And today is Valentine's Day, which always turns out quite interesting for me. At least since I stopped mourning the pretty chocolate and realised i don't actually NEED a boy to buy it for me. Mark's and Spencer's heart 'mosaic', you will soon be mine. And given that i managed my not eating chocolate/sweets/nice things goal, I think I deserve it. Sadly, I do not think that there will be marvellous adventures tonight like there have been in previous years, like attempted dog-rescues and gay clubs - I like to think that buying nice chocolate and marvellous adventures are somehow cosmically linked - but....all my flatmates will be out, so i can rent some nice DVDs and sprawl out in the living room, yay! Amelie, perhaps, since I have not seen her yet. Perhaps followed up by something horrory and beautiful. hmm....

I need to make more lists. Clearly I do not make enough. And clearly there is no time like the present :)

Also I need the Internet in my room, but that will never happen now, and I must rely on uni computers. Growl. I'm sure I could insightfully ramble so much more than this. Sigh. I hate you, Ntl

Spent the weekend at home in Yorkshire (ee by gum, and whatnot), where I had more access to the Internet than I do here, and yet I updated less. Mysterious. Wasn't as boring as usual (no offense, padres), possibly due to the three week old baby constantly crying, or sucking his fist, or doing something else fascinating like, y'know, moving his arm. He continues to be marvellous, and I didn't even do anything foolish like kiss him on the nose or sneeze on him or accidentally drop him in the bin or anything (is proud). The weekend also involved Pizza Hut takeout, and a good £85 'earned' through premium bonds and a generous grandma, and so can be considered a success all round.

Long rambly ramblyness ) Long rambly holidayness ) Long rambly readingness )

And of course, have been watching plenty of TV - I didn't want one in my student digs at first, because I can waste so much time with it, but I'm glad for it now. I would never have known the glory of Green Wing and Sea of Souls otherwise. Yay. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Andy Hunter - he ain't no gangster, just a crazy, mixed-up kid in a sharp suit. I want to say 'do yourself a favour, kid: close down the bookies, buy the Vic from dirty (dirty) Den, rehire Alfie, and live together with him and his cousins in shacked-up alcohol-fuelled bliss'. But I can't :(. Was distinctly cheered up by Danny luring his 'brother' into a dark empty house so he could stare longingly through the darkness at him and say they 'could be very happy here'. You go, crazy psycho-boy. Shag that family. In Hollyoaks news, Ali and Justin are clearly about to become New Boy's bitches in the hopes of being signed to his dad's team, and Lisa has magically become a complete cowbag through the glory of character-rape. I miss Bella :(. Not even new notannoying!Zara is as cool.

Also caught last night's episode of Look Around You, a crazy, faux-70s science show which effectively takes the piss out of every show like it, and is truly hilarious sometimes. I'd listen to 'Machadynu'. Was mostly just shocked at the fact it was hosted by Peter Seracofawitz (?), aka the voice of Darth Maul (I love you, The Sith Academy), aka Evil Duane from Spaced. I was all 'what are you doing in the Seventies, Duane? Tim has not even been born yet, how can you possibly shag him?'. Also with him was that man of a thousand faces, Mark Heap, looking actually rather Jack Nicholson-like and sexy. It was a half hour of shocks. But reminded of the mmm, Duane/Tim, which possibly I will squee about as part of the 'explain three of the random interests in your interests list' meme. But not today, as this post is already long enough, and i have (stupid) very good reading to do (strike-through effect, anyone? Anyone at all?)

Eek! Mum just called and my sister is in the hospital, possibly in the first stages of labour! It's all going on!

It does mean I'm gonna have to hurry up and decide whether I want to go back home for the week or not though. I do want to be there when he's born, but I don't particularly want to pack, move back for a week, then pack and come back. I'm settled in here now, and I'm enjoying it more than I would at home. Sigh. Maybe I'll just go back for a few days. That'd work, I guess.

Can't go back till tomorrow anyway, after I've handed in my literature essay, which is completely edited and finished, aside from the references, which i will do today, and then that's it. I can stop talking about essays, and start acting all smug around Jos (housemate who USUALLY has essays finished before me, but not this time!). Gonna have to start buying up next term's reading list as well, tomorrow probably, but still have the Knight's Tale to finish, and REALLY want to finish Crime And Punishment, which has been a noose around my neck for about two years now. I mean, I'm enjoying it, but i know what happens (thanks to the TV adaption with the foxy John Simm), so it's just so easy to put down. Sigh.

Spent lots of money on Thursday, of course. Got the Garden State soundtrack (YES!), half-price Adrian Mole hardback, and some very pretty £10 fairy lights from habitat I've been coveting for a while. And DVDs, of course - the Boondock Saints, because it was only £6, and a Tale of Two Sisters, which is not my most favourite film ever, but very good, and the only film that's ever REALLY scared me as an adult (I actually whimpered in the cinema!). There's still plenty of stuff I want, of course, but I'm going to leave it until all my debits go out and this month's rent, and I know where I am money-wise.

Sigh. Still coveting though. An Eddie Izzard stand-up DVD, to be precise - I'm trying to widen my DVD horizons. Circle has been recommended, but...£20. And the Fast Show complete boxset is out - every episode of Ted and Raplh known to man! And then in February there'll be Hero and Oldboy, and Dead Man's Shoes in March!

And I should probably get some new clothes to replace the old broken ones.

I need a job.

Anyway. Today's plans include doing the essay references and possibly going to see Lemony Snicket again, since I have a press pass for the Savoy (cinema round the corner). And hopefully Sea of Souls tonight, since last night's episode was quite intriguing. Hmm. And deciding what I'm going to do about home, of course.
