But anyway. As a palette cleanser from that - I don't think I ever made a New Year's post. What with being in Lancaster and the Red Death and all that. While I was at Jen's we held the Slash Awards 2016, which was quite a nice round up of the year. I would love to post the whole thing, but I'm just really tired, so essentially the results were:

Best Buddy Pairing: - Gavin/Ryan from Achievement Hunter (RPS). I love them SO MUCH, and I didn't talk about them for ages because I was ashamed of my RPS, but - as a group Achievement Hunter really love each other, but Gavin and Ryan are just so weirdly interested in each other, and the weird way the other thinks, and they both follow along the other's weird logic so they can figure out what they really mean, and laugh at the end. And Gavin just wants Ryan to protect him because he knows Ryan's quite good at games and quite patient with incompetence, and Ryan generally goes along with whatever weird idea Gavin has because he knows Gavin is really funny and knows how to make and direct videos, so it will make the video better, and they play together, and it's just really lovely.

Best Enemy Pairing: - Jusis/Machias from Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (video game). You can tell they're going to be the slash pairing from the game's anime intro, and hated each other for reasons of status and attitudes to status, but within an hour of meeting each other had beautifully romantic moments of being really impressed by the other's skill at court fencing, and really relieved that the other one had come to save them after their group failed to kill a huge monster. And all the other characters were like "you're totally soulmates in sync deep down, you know", and they both just refused to countenance each other for the sake of it, and then Machias beat Jusis at chess even though he was a commoner, and the game ended with them being made to do a duet at their class' concert at the end of year school festival. Because the game maker's know what's up. I am very much looking forward to whatever's in the next few games.

Best Hatesex: - Jacob Frye/Maxwell Roth from Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (video games). Well I wasn't expecting that to go canonical. Maxwell Roth started out calling Jacob "my dear", and inviting him along to blow things up for great justice, and Jacob Frye was enamoured with him because he was a criminal and finally let Jacob fix things by blowing things up, rather than his sister who just wanted to do everything legally. But then it turned out Maxwell Roth had no problem with killing children "for great justice", was quite okay with it really, and he was too much of a criminal. So they had to have a big showdown in a theatre with a show Maxwell Roth had designed entirely for Jacob just to fuck with him, while Jacob tried to kill him. It was epic.

Best Incest Pairing: - Ross Barton/James Barton from Emmerdale (TV). There were SO FEW NOMINEES this year, but this one wins out mostly because James died this year, so we will never have their pairing again. James is Ross' dad, I know, I know, but he was always a little too interested in him, and last year Ross had a baby, and pretended he didn't have a baby for a long time, but then decided to actually be a dad to the baby, and James just so supported him, and understood him, and when it came down to it was the only one Ross really listened to, and in all the interviews people were like "Ross hates James, because basically he is just like James, and they can almost never talk". And they both just casually looked after Ross' son, because they were both really good at looking after babies without being creepy about it like Ross' mum, and Ross was always getting into trouble with people and James would just watch with a little smirk, and then eventually if it went too far having a short word with him, and Ross just pretty much stopping or deciding it probably wasn't worth the effort. Then James died, and Ross had a breakdown for a week about how he'd let his dad down, and had never told him he loved him, and couldn't get justice for his dad, but also because his dad was a shithead who'd just cheated on their mum a few weeks before, and now they'd never be able to sort it out together or argue through it. And I just really loved them.

Best Newcomers: - David/Max from Camp Camp (web series). This pairing contains an underage boy from an animated show, but just HEAR ME OUT. Or skip to the next section, whatever. The series is about a terrible summer camp, and the incredibly optimistic camp counsellor who works there called David, and the young boy called Max who hates being there and hates everything, especially David. And I love them. They have the kind of relationship and slashiness that I just didn't think we were allowed to have anymore on TV or in fiction, Max is just so randomly obsessed with David, in a way that is clearly about his own emotional incompetence and issues, and stuff he hasn't worked out yet, and it is just so clear on the show in a way that characters just don't seem to get to be anymore, like they all just have to be emotionally competent. And I couldn't believe it when I saw it, it was such a relief to know it was the way characters were written that was why I don't really have a lot of pairings anymore, not just that I'm dead inside. I still have trouble with the pairing, just because I see Max as the aggressor (dominant one? something), and that's hard to put together with a character that isn't emotionally/sexually mature yet. But they really restored my faith that slash could exist in the world, so for me they are the best new pairing.

Best Pairing: - The big one, duh da da duh! And it's - Ryan/Gavin from Achievement Hunter. Just for the sheer longevity, and amount of fic there is for them, and the sheer amount of AUs they almost canonically have from all the different games they play. They're a really lovely pairing to have long-term. Ryan loves Gavin's girlfriend, did I mention that? I think they were friends before he joined Achievement Hunter, and they used to host a bunch of shows together before she had to leave the company. Gavin and Ryan used to tease each other with random bits of knowledge of each other they picked up from her (Meg). It was incredibly lovely.

Most Inappropriate Villain: - Maxwell Roth from Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (video game). See: Best Hatesex. Maxwell Roth really went all out with the 'my dear' stuff.

Best Gay Cop Lovers: - There were no nominees this year. It was the saddest thing.

Best Gay Killing Scene: - There were actually two nominees this year. The other one was (AU) Gavin/Ryan from Achievement Hunter, for this scene from their live playsession of Dead By Daylight. But the winner once again has to be Maxwell Roth/Jacob Frye from Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, because - SPOILERS - on top of all the other stuff Maxwell Roth did with Jacob, when Jacob finally assassinated him and he lay dying, he jumped up and kissed Jacob, and said he'd done it for the same reason he did everything else - "because I can". Gay as fuck.

Most Beautiful Man: - You get the nominees for this one! And pictures.

The Supervillain, Genghis Khan (music video)

Ross Barton, Emmerdale (TV). He's so pretty. So, so pretty.

David Platt, Coronation Street (TV). His wife died this year, and it was unbelievable.

Deacon, Fallout 4 (video game). He's wonderful. He's so sad. He loves the Sole Survivor so much.

Dick Grayson, DC Comics (comics). Better than Batman. Finer and better than Batman.

Church, Red Vs Blue (web series). Everything I have to say about him is spoilers, but laskdjaslkdjasl.

And the winner is...David Platt. Because he's David Platt.

Most Beautiful Woman: And again! Woo hoo!

Erin Gilbert, Ghostbusters 2016 (film). I can't believe her, I love her so much, I can't believe she got to insecure, and all over the place, and have a proper hero moment of running into a disaster while everyone else ran away, and figure out what she really wanted. I can't believe so much about the Ghostbusters film.

Amanda Waller, Suicide Squad (film). She won't take your shit. She'll kill you.

Charity Dingle, Emmerdale (TV). Always the most beautiful, forever the most beautiful, she's an incredible character and Emma Atkins is an incredible actor. See here for the most incredible scene about child abuse, and prostitution, and domestic abuse (tw for violence) ever seen on British TV.

Hillary Clinton, reality. There are no words, and it's so incredibly sad, and so incredibly amazing. I don't think I ever had a hero before Hillary Clinton, and now she inspires me every day, and I can't believe she got up in front of so many people, so many cunts, and tried to be President of the United States, and she cares so much, and people are so awful about her, and she's just amazing and I love her.

Klementina Rystovich, The Fuse (comic). That's her at the front, I love her. She's everything a female character could ever be, all rolled into one. The last book opened with her just weightlifting in her apartment, even though she's in her sixties. I love her.

Keira Metz, The Witcher III (video game). !!! The best part of the Witcher III to be quite honest. She just didn't care, and liked whatever she liked, but then did care, and nearly died or passed out in a dungeon from using her powers to help the main character so much, and you get to catch her and have a conversation with her while she's all droopy, and she doesn't care and just wants her old soft bed back, and I love her.

Stryx, Secret Six (comic). She's the one at the back there, I love her. She was raised as an assassin for a corrupt organisation, but then either Batman destroyed them or she left and she decided not to do that anymore. She can't really talk, and she can't really spell, and she doesn't know how to home, and she just loves things and kills people and I love her.

And the winner is...Hillary Clinton. Because she's...speechless-making, she's all the best parts of all the women above and so much, and actually real, and she tries so hard for us, and she tried so hard to save us, and she knew people would probably be awful and not really care for it, and she put up with so much, and just kept going. And she still really cares, and is really trying to help us. And I can't believe it. I love her. She makes the world a better place to live in.

Best Dressed: More pictures! And I've just realised I have no idea how big these pictures are, so um, apologies, I guess. Also I realised that I forgot a few people when I did the Slashies at Jen's, so I'm going to put them here, hurrah.

Ross Barton, Emmerdale (TV):

This was from a jewellery shop heist he did, where as a disguise he put grey in his hair, put on some glasses, and wore a suit, and also he took his baby on the heist. It was unbelievable.

Suzaku, Exist Archive: The Other Side Of The Sky (video game):

I don't even really know why I'm so enamoured of this outfit, but I am. She's using her boobs as skull eyes! Her boobs are out, and I don't even care! Also she's wearing cobweb-style tights, I can't believe her. And her weapon in the game, that she's holding there, is a sword-whip. This outfit and what I felt is said about her character was the number one driving force for me ultimately getting the game. And she did not disappoint.

Debbie Maddox, Yonderland (TV):

She's on the left there, she had to dress up as basically Catwoman to convince a guy who was going out trying to be a superhero and causing more damage than he prevented, to basically stop doing that. It was a complete surprise, and completely wonderful.

Eddie Brock, Truth in Journalism (web short):

There's a body in that scene with him, but it's the best I could find. You have to admit, he looks good in a suit.

And the winner is...Ross Barton. Because when that happened I couldn't believe my eyes, or my own mind, or whether or not it was happening, or how wonderful TV can be. It was a very good outfit.

And finally, the Lifetime Achievement Award: This year goes to Spike/Angel from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Because it was a really good pairing for a really long time, and in a lot of ways was how I got into slash. I'd always had little pings of interest whenever guys got very close on TV, and when Robin took Will's face in his hands in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. But Buffy the Vampire Slayer was on around the time I was reading J17, probably my favourite magazine that was around when I was a young teenager, and in one of their issues they just had a little side bar about this new thing called 'fanfiction' that was popping up on the internet, and they gave links to a Daria archive, another archive I can't remember, and a Buffy archive. The next year, Spike came onto the show, and had the whole scene with Angel where it seemed like Angel was on his side but then really wasn't, and Spike had a whole angry thing about he was his sire, man, and how let down he was, and then I started looking for fics about their dynamic, and I realised it was only really in the over-18s sections that that stuff was there, and then - to my embarassment and blushes - I learned about the sexually explicit fics out there, and then I started reading Spike/Angel fics, and then I started reading slash. And that was how I got started, really. And Angel and Spike were really slashy, and really good, and have probably been quite formative in terms of a lot of the pairings and relationships I liked, or at least had an influence on them. And so, they get my lifetime achievement award. For affecting my life. And still being one of my favourite, solid pairings I look back on. Even though I never really liked Angel all that much. Still. Angel/Spike.
