Okay, meme. Much shorter hopefully than previous comments. I would like to spend less than all night on this. Also, I am using the 'Jekesta method', which essentially means these aren't at all my 'top five', but the five I can think of/like the best today, particularly. Yes.

Top 5 fic genres:

  1. Slash. I think this is a genre. Is it a genre? I think it is a subsection of romance, wherein people do not go all goopy and wax lyrical about partners before settling down into socially acceptable ideal roles of nurturer/protector. Rather, wherein everyone is fucked up for ages, and thinking naughty thoughts, before finally not being able to take it anymore/saying 'screw it', and having lots and lots of sex and perhaps running away in a car to live in fucked-up bliss by the sea. Also, pretty boys do sex in it (or girls. Or boys and girls if they are unconventionaly enough. Equal opportunities, yo?)

  2. Vignettes. I do love a good angsty, complex thought process about an annoying but enigmatic character in a person's life. Or just a general lovely lyrical contemplation of how weird their life is. Because fanfiction is mostly about 'filling in the gaps', I think. The fact that it often allows for long descriptions/discussions of my favourite characters is merely a bonus :)

  3. AUs. Because they are interesting and generally different from most of the other fic you will read for a fandom (duh), and they can allow the 'fixing' of certain unpleasant canon situations (like Wesley not being a streetwalker) or the very least they shake them up, and because they do often tend to be mostly about the characters, funnily enough. Because what else is the point of them? And when they're well-written, they even get it right.

  4. Crackfic! I did not truly appreciate or even really understand the term until a few weeks ago, but I have discovered the glory of them now. Because they allow you to really cut loose from canon, in a way even AUs don't, and just really go wild with an idea, and they also tend to generally be more character-based than anything else, and that's really what I'm in fanfic for. And hey, who wouldn't want to read about Spike and Xander running away to join the circus or joining a bomb disposal squad? I'd read it.

  5. Mpreg. A recent addiction interest, but a powerful one nonetheless. I suppose they're pretty much crackfic too, but not really so I don't care yay! They are better! When they are well-written of course, and not goopy (see: Romance, above), but actually written semi-realistically for the characters, if not for the universe. Just picture the look of confused panic on your favourite character's face, and all the arse-kicking they will do eight months down the line when it is too hot in the house and someone forgot to buy more milk!!!, and you will be fine ;)

Okay, first off I have waaay more than five. But this is not a listing exercise, it is a choosing exercise, so:

  1. Lindsey! At the moment Lindsey is the best, because he is blond and pretty and lovely blue eyes and I love him, and has razor-sharp intelligence despite being trailer trash, and has moral crises despite being evil, and acts all immature with Angel despite being one of the top lawyers in the city, and pretty much just does whatever the hell he wants, kicking ass and taking names all the while. He is also clearly Wolfram and Hart's prettiest whore, and also clearly doesn't mind about it, and just hurray for Lindsey! Hurray.

  2. Second is Spike, and always will be unless he is first, which is often. He was in Angel recently, and I had forgotten how scary he could be when he wanted to. Militant. And how hilarious he could be. But he is also wild and crazy and vulnerable and lovely and sarcastic and nail-polish-wearing, and has only one outfit but so many sexy looks! I like it when he just wears the t-shirt best. And has lovely boots, and is not a mastermind but sees all sorts of emotional things anyway, and always survives, and fights like a beautiful animal, and I love him. Yes.

  3. Bernard Black! Because he is drunk and horrible and smelly and dirty, but also randomly intelligent and fearless (which one of you bitches wants to dance?), and doesn't care about the dirt and the mess, and hates everyone and just wants to read his book, dammit! Nothing else matters, and he doesn't care what anyone thinks because they are neither books nor wine. And he would so have won the fight against Evan, if only he hadn't drunk quite so much bleach. Yes.

  4. Guy from Green Wing! He is a bastard, but a lovely shameless bastard. Confident, at least, and somehow sexy despite his bastardly ways and donkeylike face. He recurls his hair! He undoes scrubs with his teeth! He speaks the French! He weightlifts Martin! But also kisses him on the forehead (incest, anyone?)! But it is all only hiding his onion layers, or onion layer, because underneath he cries about his mum and keeps a picture of the dad he never met by his bedside table and wouldn't cut Mac's hair (because he loves him!), and is just lovely generally and I love him.

  5. Sonny from Dog Day Afternoon. Because he is the kindest bank robber in the world, and perhaps the smartest, I think, and gets aspirin and doctors and pizza for his hostages, and knows to pat down people before he lets them in but still lets cops touch the cut on his forehead (o m g!), and calls his gay lover his wife, and isn't afraid to shout to him across a huge crowd and tons of newspaper people and he is lovely and I love him. If the world was a fair place I would live in a big house with him and all these characters forever. Yes.

Top 5 gay love moments that never happened:

  1. The one where Lindsey goes to Angel's apartment with his hair all in his eyes and just stands at the edge of his bedroom, looking down at the ground and just tired, and Angel sees him and just walks over to him and puts his arms around him and holds him against his chest. You know the one.

  2. The one in Six Feet Under where Billy is a little bit mad and a little bit off his meds, and Nate turns up wherever he is, organising his photographs, and Billy sees him and is tense for a moment, then turns back to his photographs, and Nate walks up behind him, and Billy starts explaining the photographs and why he likes them and things and Nate just looks at him sort-of-helplessly but sort-of-'here' and puts an arm around his shoulders, and Billy goes quiet and then puts his head on Nate's shoulder, and it is good.

  3. The one in Green Wing where Guy is tired and fucked-up and at a hospital party and keeps getting rejected, but doesn't care anymore and goes to sit in the cloakroom, in the quiet and warm, and Mac notices he's gone and leaves the party, and all the women and even Caroline and finds him in the cloakroom, and just sits with him. Without saying a word.

  4. The one in Sea of Souls where during one of Craig and John Wade's many corridor conversations (preferably a private one), Craig is talking a lot about ethics and making people believe in things that aren't true and the little girl dying of cancer, and then Wade suddenly pushes him up against the wall, looking at him really intensely, and shutting him up and reminding him that all that may be true, but they also really, really fancy each other. And Craig doesn't say anything, but he knows. And then Wade lets him go, and all is semi-normal again, until the end.

  5. The one in Angel wherein Angel goes to Lindsey's office, and Lindsey is taken aback but covers it mostly well, and tells him to get out, but not as angrily as usual, and that if security catches him they'll kill him, and that Lindsey wants nothing more to do with Angel, but Angel just looks at him, and Lindsey sounds more and more tired as it goes on, and then he looks up at Angel and they are just kissing, kissing, kissing, and Angel lifts him up and sits him on the desk, and pulls his shirt open, all while kissing, and they do 'I love you and I can't take it anymore' sex on the desk, on the very desk of Lindsey's evil. This is the best moment. Yes.

That was fun. Though it makes me sort of hate regular TV. Hmph. Have been watching more of Angel - every day, in every way, I know where more and more of the title clips come from. I do not like Buffy. I do not like the episode with Buffy in it. I cried nevertheless. But now I want to write fic wherein they both get their wish, and Angel is human and Buffy is not a Slayer, and they are both just so. Bored. With each other. Hmm. There is still not enough Lindsey, but as of next episode there will be Wesley, and I think I might love him enough to put me on for a while, from what I've heard. And then he can have a part in the Mpreg, doing research and being flaily and telling Lindsey how to breathe during the labour, which is all for the good.

I love everything you say in this post. I LOVE IT IN CAPITALS. I love you also. Your top 5 gay moments are particularly beautiful and steal most of my love, especially the last one, and even more of my love than your fic genres which are all PERFECT YS.
