You know what would be nice? A book allowance. From the Government and whatnot. Wherein you could just have one book - any book - a week, for free. It would work - you would wait for the beginning of each week to get another book, rather than buying 3 in one go and shoving them under the bed. Which I'm sure no-one anywhere does ::sets fire to under my bed:: Just a thought I had, in a bookshop just now. Contemplating petty theft.
Also, weather that would make up its bastard mind. Just pick a theme and stick with it. I wouldn't mind continuous rain in the winter. At least then you could buy a scuba suit and be done with it. Have a floor of your house that converted into a swimming pool. But no. We have to have the ever-changing miracle of weather. Hurrah. Another annoying thing is thinking you can't possibly write a 400-word film review of Sin City, and then getting started and writing 500. And walking to campus in the rain only to find the travel office has closed and you cannot get a coach ticket home for Friday. Growl.
But - I have finished Lemony Snicket, up to press! Except for the Unauthorised Biography but we ignore that! The Grim Grotto much more serious than all of the others - more grown up, I suppose, like the kids. Hmph. Wasn't sure about Violet in this one - all 'Quigley, Quigley, Quigley' ::swoon:: - wasn't that swish. I am so sick of love/boyfriends making girl-characters all weird and blah - you never see it happen to boys! And she was insensitive to Klaus' love and Fiona's family, and believed things printed by the Punctilio, and told the Hook-Handed Man he was a wicked person. Growl. But Fiona kicked arse, and Fernald! My beloved Fernald!
Things we have learned about the Hook-Handed Man:
@ His name is Fernald
@ He used to raise salmon, and have favourites!
@ He shuffles cards, and has his own card game!
@ He has a 'not my favourite poet', which implies he has favourite poets, which implies eeeeee!! and he might have studied T.S. Elioteeeee!!
@ He knows things about fungus!
@ He was a 'goody-goody' who got seduced to the dark side!
@ He would prefer less killing/arson/kidnapping in his career.
@ He is disillusioned with VFD, and with good/evil in general.
@ He does not believe anyone is either 'good' or 'evil'.
@ He smiles and is a teenager in old photographs!
@ I love him more and more every day!
Of course, his new, slightly classier persona ruins my old, fierce, perhaps even animal conception of him - but now I'm imagining poetry!sex with Violet, wherein he kisses her chest and quotes morally grey things, and she half enjoys it, half keeps one eye on the hooks he's resting on. Which is nice. Also, VFD - Violet,Fiona Fernald, Duncan? Interesting, no? But he's getting a backstory, which speaks well of his possible appearance in the next books and chances of survival, and perhaps redemption? Sort of. Keeping his hooks. At this point, I'm hoping for a big 'screw you' to VFD and Olaf in general, and all the kids and Fernald running off to live and study on their damned own with their fortunes, protected by a wicked pair of hooks which they don't need to know he uses. Yes. ::Hopes::
Also; I completely ignore all drawings of him as a middle-aged gangster-ish man! Omg he will always look fierce and young and slightly scruffy like in the movie! Of which their will probably be a sequel, apparently, yay!
