Other things that happened over the weekend: I learned that my dad reads the Daily Mail these days. Apparently the online articles are 'very quick', and you can catch up with a lot of stories during your lunch hour. Given what my dad was already like, it's not really a great combination. More like two disastrous tastes that taste disastrous together. But there you go. It's happening.

Also we had to have a discussion, after he said the English were 'a bunch of French people, ruled over by Germans' (because apparently Queen Victoria is German/was of German descent, so the Royal Family is just Germans), about whether or not the English are mostly descended from the Anglo-Saxons, who originally came from Germany. Spoiler: they are. I know for a definite fact they are.

But meanwhile, Vera literally just gets better and better. I mean it's still ridiculous, but it's amazing, she is so beautiful, I genuinely find it feminist in a lot of important ways, especially the last episode. So beautiful. So beautiful.

So - the money thing turned out to be that mum and dad didn't quite have enough money for the house. Because the house is still going to be in their name, they didn't realise that they'd have to pay stamp duty, because they owned two properties at once, which meant paying out a couple of extra thousand. Which would have been fine - apparently - because they're both getting paid by next week - but it turned out the people selling the house wanted the money today. So my mum came into my bedroom this morning, asking if I'd transfer some money from my ISA into her account. Which is still way more involved than I wanted to be, but whatever. It took a few calls, and I had to transfer it into my own current account, then into her account, but I did it. Apparently they didn't actually need the money at the appointment they had today, like they thought they did, but it's being transferred overnight, so by tomorrow they should have the house. And I am assured that my money was just for a short term loan, and I'll probably have it back by next week. Of course, because I haven't paid anything into my ISA for a while, I'll have to go through a whole security rigmarole to pay it back in. But, other than that, it should be quite straightforward at least.

When my dad got home, he - half-jokingly - asked why I'd only transferred £2000. He said I had £3000, so he'd thought I might transfer all of it, so mum and he had £500 spending money each. Fuck off, dad. It was half-joking, but still annoying. He's only got £60 in the bank, apparently. But he's meant to be getting paid this week, so not for long. I also suggested he shouldn't have booked a holiday for my sister's kids, if he was going to be in that sort of dire straits. He blamed mum for that.

Meanwhile, my sister's contribution today was to repeatedly text mum while she and I were sorting out bank things, asking when mum was coming to take the kids to school, and could she bring some clean socks and underwear because the kids didn't have any.

Anyway. So my trip to Leeds is on hold till tomorrow. If I'm allowed to spend any money at the moment. Mum will never know it was a trip to buy her own birthday present that got postponed. Or at least not till Sunday. Also I went to vote today. Please let Britain stay in the EU. Please don't let the racists win. Please don't trap us in a country with the racists.

Today our toilet had a big puddle of liquid at the base of it, on the floor. For a few weeks now I've been noticing an odd damp outline around the bottom of it, where it joins the floor, but my dad insisted it must be condensation - even when there wasn't any on the toilet - because there was no other way water could get out. Today he's saying it was probably because my MN was at our house - he seems to think none of my nephews have the ability to aim. My MN has never done anything like that when he's stayed over before, but the toilet hasn't been leaking since. I am still unconvinced though.

Apart from anything, we're having a problem with the toilet because it's got this tendency to run after you flush it, so you have to jiggle the lid about before the cistern will fill up properly and allow you to flush it again. This has been a problem for at least a year, but this last week it's just been running and running, and no amount of jiggling could reliably fix it. I don't like that stupid toilet. I'm also pretty sure I'm about to start, or have already somewhat started my period, and I don't think that's going to be enjoyable with our main toilet broken.

Also it is Mother's Day tomorrow and my mother has taken off. She will not be up waiting for my card from Clintons or harriedly selected gift tomorrow morning when I get up, because she is off on a spa day, and will be staying there until after lunch. So Mother's Day has become a bit haphazard. Also because mum thought she WOULD be back for lunch, so didn't get my dad and I anything to eat in her absence - dad suggested going out, and I had to point out it would be Mother's Day, and that would probably be a nightmare.

So somehow today turned out to be needlessly aggravating. On the other hand, the Hospice have offered me shifts every Saturday, rather than just alternate Saturdays, which will make getting a regular routine going a little easier. And I thought I'd be working those shifts alone, but it turns out they're hiring a paid receptionist to do admin work over the weekends and man the station if people need toilet breaks and stuff, so I'll even have some form of company. So that's turned out quite nicely actually.

Hello. I saw both Captain America and The Avengers last week. I've been sort of trying to figure out what to say about them. But anyway, here it is:

My thoughts on Captain America, spoilers for Captain America )

The Avengers, spoilers for The Avengers )

Right. So. The other thing I've been meaning to post is that my mum's been on holiday, and I wasn't really looking forward too much to spending two weeks home alone with my dad. But it turned out to be a lot better than I thought it was going to be, quite nice really. And my mum's back tonight. So that's that, I guess.

Family stuff, mentions periods )

I learned a new word today - "snurkling". Which is apparently a 'gypsy word' to describe what men my dad doesn't like do around other men's women. Every day I marvel a being granted such of font of esoteric knowledge as he. I love you, dad.

I'm making a Fandom Diary. It now contains pretty much every film, book and DVD release I'm excited about over the next year, as well as Livejournal/con stuff. And family birthdays because, y'know, as many reminders as possible are for the best. It is silver and vaguely professional looking. I'm quite proud of it :)

Also it has maps of the British rail network and London Underground on the back. I did not realise Preston deserved a bigger circle than Lancaster. And there are nice little quotes in the corner of every page. I'm not quite sure why it wants me to put all the details I have on the front page though. Everything except 'I am generally alone during the week at...'. And a nice little note saying 'Please stalk me!'. I'm not sure how much my National Insurance number matters to my fandom schedule anyway.

The kitten/dog swap is happening today. It's going to be a bit odd without the dog around, after 7 years. I still remember the night we got him - mum, dad and Katie went, while I stayed home and discovered Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Another William. But there will be kittens, so it's a pretty fair trade I think. For names I have decided on Kell and Jasmine, or possibly just Jas. After finally deciding against 'Sloop'. Probably there will be pictures later. Probably of them being terrified and not knowing where they are.

There is a woman who has apparently gotten back to my dad saying she might be interested in one, and since we were only taking two to hurry things along mum and dad seem to think we should let her have it. She can't until August 25th though, so we are taking both to 'see how things go', and I am pretending there is no woman at all. And planning to - cry, if they still want to give it away by the 25th. Surely that will work.

I have no money again, a mere week after being given roughly £300 by my parents for food and bills and living and such.

Seriously, like £14. This morning, before I went to town.

This did not stop me buying Nathan Barley on DVD. For lo, it was my whim promise to myself, and if you can't keep those, what's the point yeah?

The Futurama ultimate boxset is only £60 in Fopp ::pines::

Christmas is of course coming, not that I'm allowed to think about it until I've done about three essays, SERIOUSLY AND WITH THE PROPER DILIGENCE. But I'm really not sure how that's going to turn out this year, since as far as I can tell my dad A) doesn't want to just give me money, and b) doesn't want to hear what I want. Hold onto the receipts, dad. That's all I'm saying.

As for you people,

Christmas wishlist meme. Oh yes. )

My list seems slightly angry, for some reason. Perhaps the fact most of the things I wish for are things I wish I would write. Dammit.

I went to see the doctor about the crazy spots appearing on my hands lately, and she tells me they look like insect bites. So now I'm infested. Joy.

That is mostly all.
