My adventures in the last few days have also included:

  • Going to the doctor's and getting a sick note that will last me indefinitely, until a decision is reached on my appeal, yay!

  • I got the bus to my local cinema on Wednesday, and just before we reached the cinema a man on the backseat - who I'm pretty sure got on the bus in the bus station with me and seemed alright - suddenly starting shouting loudly. He stopped after a minute, and everyone looked around at him, but he didn't say anything else (that I heard) so I assumed he probably had Tourette's or something. Then, he started coughing really loudly and quite noticeably. Then a little closer to the cinema he got up and walked down to the driver, and his jeans were pretty clearly wet, in a way that it seem pretty clear he'd wet himself. He went and spoke to the driver, something I didn't hear, and then walked back to the backseat, where he'd left a jacket, but because of the bus swaying as it drove, he fell, literally, on top of a young woman in one of the seats. Still with partly wet jeans. He got up, went back to the backseat, started coughing again and then put his head to one of the top bits of bus windows that open, and clearly spat a bit of sick out. Then he walked down towards the driver again, with a jacket still on the backseat, and then violently vomited, all over the floor near the door. And then got off the bus at the bus stop the driver was just pulling into. My stop and most of the other passengers' was the next one along from there, and we all had to tread carefully over the sick to get off. I held onto one of the rails to help with this, and then realised that his sick had probably hit the rail as well, and part of one of my fingers felt a bit sticky, so I had to go and wash my hands.

Later on, while waiting for my film, I was wandering around near the cinema, and I'm pretty sure the guy walked past me, and he didn't seem drunk and wasn't staggering or anything. So I'm not sure what was going on there. A part of me feels a bit bad for not telling him about the jacket on the backseat, but I didn't really want to speak to him or get involved much. And it might not have been his, I guess, since he left it there twice. In any case. That was fun.

  • I have discovered a new-found love of the Simon and Garfunkel song "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard". It's quite ace.

  • I bought this necklace from Topshop, after wanting it for quite a while. It's not a collar like I thought it was, sadly. But it's still quite cool.

  • And I went to go see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, yesterday. I understand that this might be a bit confusing, considering all the other Deathly Hallows posts that will probably be all over the place at the moment. It is Part 1. I never saw it when it first came out in the cinemas. I saw it yesterday.

I have to say that hands down, the best part of it was that Gellert Grindelwald is David Platt's grandfather. In many ways, it explains so much. Man. That was almost as good as when the Devil from Reaper turned up in X-Men: First Class advising the American military department on a possible war with Russia. NEVER LISTEN TO HIM, AMERICA.

    Anyway.

Well. You know, I wasn't that thrilled to go see the film, because I think I've made it fairly clear I'm not a big fan of the main trio, and am mostly interested (for whatever reason) in Draco, which I guessed there wouldn't be much of. That said, I think the film did a pretty good job of showing how alone and scared and desperate they were, and really making me feel for them. There were some things I thought the film did worse than the books - Dobby's death seemed a bit over-egged, and the bit where Ron comes back wasn't as good as the part in the books, just because he didn't seem as furious and bewildered by what Harry was doing - but some things I think they did really well, like as I say, the sense of how alone they were, the fight in the tent between Harry and Ron, and the bit where Harry and Hermione went to Godric's Hollow. I actually felt really sorry for Harry, and I don't normally. And Hermione, when she obliviated her parents, and basically onwards. And I like Ron in the films probably better than I do in the books, I think, so that was all good. They were fine, those parts, even though they did kind of drag and feel a bit directionless (which suited them, obviously, but still).

But. I kept getting distracted by those parts, by all the random male extras I kept getting attracted to. Who were largely bad guys, yes. The Snatcher guy in the forest, with the eyeliner, who could 'smell' Hermione. The Yaxley (?) guy in the Ministry, with the Scottish accent, who I still feel like I recognise, with the pulled back hair and the menacing voice. The guy Harry polyjuiced into, with his long leather coat and suit. I mean, what was that? The bad guys have to be hot? A lesson from the director on how Evil Is Sexy, and Sexy Can Still Be Evil? Eyeliner? What was going on there? And I know that Death Eaters are basically Nazis, especially in the film. That didn't help. And doesn't make me feel particularly good about it, obviously. Oh, and the politician guy! With his suits. Who I kept feeling like I recognised, and who I think looks a bit like Michael Sheen, but turned out to be a guy from Holby City. It was a bit ridiculous at that point.

And then we went to Malfoy Manor. Which was sort of the bit I'd been waiting for. I've read the books, and I'd heard some spoilers, so I knew roughly what was going to happen there. I was unprepared for quite how touchy and desperate Lucius got with Draco. I knew that the family asked Draco to identify Harry, but I wasn't prepared for the staring into each other's eyes and breathing on each other contest they seemed to be having. And I knew that Hermione got tortured. Ron and Harry got taken down into the dungeons, and we heard Hermione screaming, and this was the reaction I basically had:

"Oh, Hermione is showing some actual emotion other than bravery and stoicism and HOLY FUCK, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON, WHAT?"

Bellatrix, lying on top of Hermione, head right next to hers, mouth practically on top of hers, questioning her while Hermione is crying, really believably crying, and turning away to do something that makes Hermione start really properly screaming. It was fucked up and awful and hot all at once. I don't feel good about saying that. But I do feel correct. Jesus.

And then Voldemort went to Dumbledore's tomb to get his wand, and pretty much lay on top of him, staring down at his face, for a little while before taking the wand. What the fuck was that people?

Anyway. The good parts and the sexy parts and the weird sexy parts aside, there were also plenty of bits that made me laugh. When they probably shouldn't have. Ginny wandering around the house with an unzipped dress apparently so she could find Harry and ask him to 'zip her up'. Harry getting into Umbridge's office and just saying "Accio locket" made me laugh for some reason, as though it would somehow be that easy. The fact that the wizards and witches largely didn't seem to do much magic, just smash the place up. The locket visions getting all 12A on everyone's arses, and being all "Look Ron. THEY'RE NAKED. And in tank tops!". And I've read a number of parodies and reviews that point out that Ron doesn't get to do many spells in the movies, and they wanted to show Hermione as being the best witch, and that was pretty important to the message of the film really. But they sort of did it to the point where when Ron started putting up protection charms around their new campsite late on in the film, I was genuinely sort of suprised they would let him loose with a wand. They probably kept an eye on him, I'm sure.

But mostly it was fine though. Other than that the only thing that confused me was how they switched most of the injuries from the end of the book to happen at the beginning of the first film. What are they going to do at the end of the second film now? Kill everyone? It occured to me while watching that the films do not always follow the books, and a lot of stuff has happened in the film continuity that never happened in the books. Maybe they will all die at the end of the film. Maybe Harry will get possessed by Voldemort again. I'm guessing that probably won't happen. I suppose there are people around now who've seen the second film and could tell me. PLEASE DON'T.

Few. Anyway. Other casting things that have suprised me lately: finding out Aunt Petunia is played by the same woman who played the evil p.a. woman in the Super Mario Bros film. And finding out that the woman who played Rita Sue Dreyfuss <3 on Carnivale went for the role of Martha Kent in Smallville. Who knew?

And also today, I found out that [livejournal.com profile] jekesta doesn't want me to have a happy Christmas. WHY JEKESTA, WHY?

It isn't JUST YOU. I wrote to all my friends to tell them about how I hate them and don't want them to be happy, Rachael. Don't think you're special.

I have not received such a letter. Does that mean you love me and want me to be happy?

I probably would have found a way to ruin Christmas anyway, so I am just pleased about the VALIDATION OF MY FRIENDSHIP.

You'll notice that your friendship wasn't worth a STAMP TO ME, though. So yeh.

I can't believe how everyone is rallying to tell you that I singled you out for hatred and sadness, in many ways they are more awful than I am. At least I made up a polite lie so you wouldn't feel ESPECIALLY HATED. I'm sort of the best friend ever.

(Isn't it an amazing card? I wish all Christmas cards were brown. I only have four of those cards, I totally didn't waste one on ANYONE BUT YOU.)

They're just worried about the state of their Christmasses. They know you have influence in that area. They know you have an in with Prancer.

(It is lovely and small and brown. I get the bit with the snowdrops, and I'm assuming it's something to do with the dead earth and NEW LIFE coming and stuff. Also, thank you, obviously, for the dvds, I am very very happy to have them, thanks loads. Police detective Lucy Punch! You are very much the best friend ever. <3<3<3)

(Also, I like your icon of Blake in a hood. I assume he gets a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS INDEED.)
