It's king of annoying - but kind of amazing - when I'm listening to a CD, and I think 'this is alright but nothing special, I'll listen to it then get rid of it and make some space'. And then I start listening to CD 2, and I realise actually it IS pretty special, and I want to keep it.

Which is to say that Bessie Smith has an amazing voice, and sings about wanting sex pretty directly, for the time. Also my return key is working again. Hurrah!

Reading about you actually bothering to listen to music is reminding me a lot that I haven't bothered to listen to new music in forever. I should do that, but I find it so hard. I don't really like listening to music, I like singing along to it. So the whole listening to things before you know them is awful.

I am glad about your return key. Was it you.who.lost.your.space.bar.that.time.and.wrote.whole.posts.like.this?I.have.fond/terrible.memories.of.long.blocks.of.text.

Literally the only reason I am listening to anything is to work my way through my CD collection and get rid of some of them. It's some sort of vague pretence that I will ever, ever listen to the others afterwards. Even then, I can't really just sit down and listen to them - I have to be doing something else, so I'm not overfocusing on them, on the understanding that any song that is good enough will probably make me sit up and take notice. It is nice to be finding new songs and singers though - to be honest, it's nice just to be discovering the new music I was interested enough in years ago to buy a CD of it. But also I'm going to have some stuff to give to the charity shop, and I'm going to have my floorspace back. That is also an appealing draw.

I like listening to music I already know. Sometimes someone makes a nice angsty songvid to a song I don't know and then I add it to my collection, but otherwise I'm quite happy with music I know.
