Oh my gosh, there's a fic in my super secret RPF fandom that clearly took inspiration from another recently published WIP, applied it to a different AU but lifted basically a whole scene and lines of dialogue and stuff, and the original author commented saying 'very original'. I'd forgotten about fandom drama, this is amazing.

The holiday my parents have booked with my nephews is nearly upon us, and I still don't know if I'm going. Everything in me was saying 'no' last week, because a holiday being expected to watch and play with at least 1 of my 3 demanding nephews doesn't sound restful or fun. But it turns out my dad, who thought I was going, has booked to have the living room redecorated the only time they could do it - while they're away on holiday. With a decorator they trust, obviously. So the living room will basically be like a bombs hit it all week, and there won't be any furniture or the big TV in there, and there'll be a stranger in the house most days probably, and I'll be picking my way around paint and wallpaper paste if I even want to walk through. So. I'm not looking forward to that. And now mum's saying we're going to a holiday park, so there'll be clubs and stuff and that's where the kids will be most of the time, so. I don't know, now.

Kickboxing really wiped me out tonight, I came close to asking the teacher if I could leave the mat because I was feeling lightheaded. But I'm due a period this week, so I'm assuming it's down to hormones, and my sleep still being messed up. I have a spot at the corner of my mouth, I hate PMT (fun fact: earlier today I was trying to think of "PMT", and the first thing my jumped in with was "PTSD").

Oooh, well. There are a lot of AUs in the fandom, which is kind of nice because it can be a little weird to ship dudes who are real and very open with their fans about their personal lives and how much they love their girlfriends and stuff. Some AUs are based on games they play, some are just based on the sort of role they play in the group (one of my favourites is regularly called a serial killer by the others because of some of the dark comments he makes), and some are just ones that are popular, like ABO stuff. In this fandom, animal hybrids are really popular for some reason.

So this one author wrote a fic, about my favourite pairing, where the 'dark comment' one was a serial killer but it was set in an animal hybrid universe. The other one was a journalist who was interviewing him, and they had a whole scene of a really unprofessional, and against health and safety regulations, interrogation, which went wrong for the journalist one. It's not finished, and it's pretty clear it's going to lead to some sort of kidnap scenario. Also they made reference to the serial killer having a partner, and what type of animal hybrid they were going to be in the tags.

It's a WIP and they've only posted one chapter - you know what that's like - and then earlier this week I guess, someone else posted a fic that was a Grand Theft Auto AU (very common because that's a game the guys play a lot), but also an animal hybrid AU. In this one, the 'dark' guy was a psychotic mercenary (which is basically what he plays in the game), and the other one was a detective who was chasing him - who ends up getting chased. And they just - they copied a lot of what was in the first fic. All the characters were the same 'animal' as in the other fic, the mercenary one had a partner who was the same character (and the same animal) as in the other fic, and they had a whole scene in an interrogation office where basically the same things happened, down to a couple of lines of dialogue. It's obvious to me that the 2nd author wrote that scene out again because they REALLY LOVED IT the first time, and wanted to experience it again, but they didn't put anywhere - even that they were inspired by that other fic or really loved it, and that people should go check that out too. Someone commented and said the fic was interesting, and the 2nd author said "yeah, I just thought I'd throw a couple of AUs together for fun!".

In a way, the two fics aren't that similar - the characters aren't in the same positions, they don't have quite the same personalities, or the same relationships with each other. But one just borrowed so heavily from the other, and made no mention of it. And the fact they're both WIPs makes it kind of odd - it's a little awkward to copy from/continue someone's story when they haven't finished writing it. But nothing really new in fandom, I guess.

Nothing has kicked off. YET. But the first author left that comment, and only that comment, on Wednesday, and author no 2 has yet to reply. Ironically, author no 1 was asked in her comments if she was 'inspired' by this other AU someone had written, with a similar setting and a lot of the same pairings, and she said yes she was. But probably not down to entire scenes and lines of dialogue. It's that sort of fandom. My fear is that this drama will cause neither of them to finish their fics out of insult and awkwardness, and I have been waiting for long, dark dubcon-y stuff for this pairing for SO LONG. I had zero problems reading both, even when I was basically reading the same fic again. But at the same time, it's kind of hilarious.

BREAKING NEWS: the 2nd author has apparently deleted their fic. It's not in the tag or on their profile page anymore. Maybe she and author no 1 discussed it calmly and rationally last night. Maybe she just deleted it so she wouldn't have to answer that comment. What was she expecting though? She put fic no 2 on the same site, in the same tag, when author no 1 was obviously a fan of that pairing and that kind of fic.

It has occured to me maybe you meant "what is happening in the fandom because of this shocking turn of events". Nothing is happening in the fandom. It's a tumblr fandom, so no-one talks to each other and no-one knows what is going on. It's just something I noticed in AO3 comments, and it made me laugh like a drain.

I loved ALL of your comments. It has made me laugh very much. I hope that authors 1 and 2 did NOT discuss it rationally. I hope they're mustering their forces as we speak to make it even more awkward. Do lurkers still support people in email in Tumblr fandoms?

There is no way anyone will ever know, because no-one knows what the hell is going on on Tumblr.
