Well. Wow. On the one hand, I'm glad they didn't just forget that Chris is sometimes an abusive jerk. On the other hand, I was rather hoping we'd never have to see Maria feel the brunt of it. And I really thought Cheryl was being a bit short and impatient with her in the flat afterwards, given that she's been on the recieving end of it before, and she didn't know what Chris had actually done to her. But whatever, at least she stood up to Chris about it later.

Chris though. Saying that 'now we know why' he had moodswings, implying it was to do with the brain tumour - I sincerely hope Coronation Street aren't going to try to pass off his abusive behaviour as all to do with his illness. I mean, maybe that is quite possible in the real world. But it would be really really weird of them. Maybe it wasn't meant to be, maybe it was just something he said. But oh my god. And then later on, implying Maria was making it 'all about her' by WANTING TO KNOW WHY HE HAD SMASHED UP HER FLAT WHEN SHE TRIED TO SORT OF HELP HIM OUT. Jesus. I'm glad he's split up with her. Because she doesn't deserve that one way or the other. I did love her saying "Are you winding me up?" though. I love you, Maria.

Anyway. Other things I have been doing lately: I went to see the Horrid Henry film last week with my mum and nephew, and it turned out to be actually quite good. It started out seeming like it was going to be all about how school is rubbish and you should never do homework, kids, and really irritating, but it turned out not to be. And loads of the actors/characters were really good. Especially Anjelica Huston. And Dick and Dom were in it, wearing eyeliner. Which was kind of a suprise.

Single-Handed continues apace, although I loved Jack slightly less in last week's episode. I really liked his enemy/mentor dude though, and I hope he gets to stay in it, and possibly be Jack's boyfriend. In some ways it feels like that might ruin the show a bit, because Jack will no longer be doing everything SINGLE-HANDED. But on the other hand, it seems like it might be nice if he didn't have to do everything SINGLE-HANDED, all of the time.

Also, I have been catching up on Inspector George Gently. I got Series 1 last week, and I finally saw the pilot. Right, I knew that George came up from London and stayed in Northumberland, and I assumed it was something to do with how much he liked Bacchus. I didn't realise he said he was staying SPECIFICALLY TO CONTROL AND 'FIX' BACCHUS. That was unexpected. But ace. Much like their constant posing alone alongside beautiful scenery. Also, Guy of Gisbourne really was great. I kind of wish Ricky Deeming would turn up again, just to laugh at John. But probably that would ruin the magic of it a little bit. Still. I'm assuming it in my head slightly.

And sort of because of that, I've ended up watching more of the second series of Luther today. I was watching it when it was on, but I think the second episode of it was on the week we went to Prague, and my parents watched it while I was doing something else, and then I never caught up with it. But I remembered after finishing Series 1 of George Gently that Lee Ingleby played the psychopath in the first two-parter. And in some ways I didn't want to watch it, because I thought the switch from lovely detective to crazy murderer and then back to lovely detective might be a bit jarring. But then I remembered that I've seen Series 3 of George Gently, so after I watch Series 2 I won't have any left, and if I watch Luther after that, the last thing I'll see of him will probably be the crazy murderer. And I'd rather not have that. So basically, I did watch it.

So, Luther is basically Batman now, right? I mean, a crime-fighter who's brilliant but kind of a vigilante, operating largely outside of the law? Incredibly crazy and eccentric villains? He's even got a young male protegee, and a villain he is almost romantically entangled with. I basically started thinking this when I realised Cameron Pell reminded me of the Scarecrow from Batman. And then the villain/s in 2.03 quite remind me of Two-Face. The gangster woman's grandson (Toby?) reminds me of That Yellow Bastard from Sin City more than anything, but still. That idea, of it sort of being an overblown idea of crime and crime-fighting, sort of seems to fit, in series 2 at least.

Cameron Pell though. It was weird liking the same things about his character that I do about John Bacchus, when they're such different characters, and obviously I like one quite a lot more than the other. But you know. Same face, obviously (never let it be said I'm not shallow). But that same sort of self-consciousness, sometimes, and not always being terribly certain of themselves. They're different enough characters though, that I'm really pretty impressed with Lee Ingleby. And he was good enough that I would have been impressed anyway. And Cameron Pell himself was - I don't really want to say interesting, or sympathetic, because he obviously crossed the line a number of times, whatever he was trying to do. But one of the better villain characters in the show, I thought. Awful, obviously, but clever, and he obviously had more invested in what he was doing than just the sheer sake of being horrible, or revenge or whatever. In some ways I felt quite sorry for him, but Luther obviously did the exact right thing by just not giving into his need for attention. In some ways I'd like to see more of an exploration of him, in fic really, but there's not really much John or Ripley or anyone could do with him that wouldn't just feed back into his desire for attention. And I'd say I like to see what would happen if he and Alice met up, but I get the feeling she'd just eat him for breakfast. So there we go.

In episode 3, I was quite suprised that Jenny killed Toby though. I hadn't really thought he was going to kill her, because there was so much story going on with her and John and her and her mother that I didn't think they'd end it there. But by the same token, I thought after all the scenes we spent with Toby and his weird interest in John ("What does he like, ey? Is he like this?"), they wouldn't kill him off so quickly either. But there wasn't really much of another way that scene could have gone, other than with Jenny killed or raped, so I'm happier with it killing off Toby than going there, I guess. Everyone else who's seen Luther will probably already know how the series ends by now. I too aim to have it finished soon enough.

Also, with the main, game-playing bad guys, I'm assuming they're twins. But my mind also suggested 'clones'. It sort of seems equally possible though.

Oh yes, and Sugartown finished last night. Sadly, without any slightly abusive incest, as I might have hoped. Or [incest spoilers], I guess. But quite lovely-ly all the same. And it seemed to me to be setting itself up for a possible second series, which the BBC might go for, although I can't imagine what the story would be in another series. We'll see. But I enjoyed it, anyway. Between Sugartown and Eastenders, I'm feeling slightly let down on the slightly abusive incest front. TV is such a tease, sometimes. Also, after three episodes and the full mini-series, I still don't really know if Max is meant to be the older brother or Jason. Which seems like a failing of the show's somehow. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention properly. I might try looking it up.

Anyway. So they're my TV adventures lately. Also, there's been Hollyoaks. Hurrah!
