I probably won't be making too many of these now Nathan's gone, but:
So David got cleared of all charges of attempted murder since he's now been officially diagnosed with epilepsy. He came into the pub and saw Graeme and Tina drinking with Gary and Izzy - Gary now being back from the war after nearly being killed, and seeing his best friend killed, in a roadside bomb attack. David went over to talk to Graeme, Tina started getting angry about it, and Gary immediately started casually sticking up for him. Then, later, Gary lost a pound in the games machine at the pub, started getting angry and hitting it, then had a load of plaster come down on his head from the pub roof and really started kicking off at Steve and Becky, and David just sort of jumped in to came things down. It was kind of brilliant. I have wondered, with David coming back to the street after a few weeks, and having to cope with epilepsy now, and Gary having just come back from war having had his traumatic experiences - and David possibly having a similar history to compare it to, given what happened with him and his family and Richard Hillman - whether they might have him and Gary become proper friends now. Given what's happened tonight, maybe they will.
Also, Nick turned up in the pub to celebrate the news of David's court case being dropped, and spent all of the scene talking to his mum about it, rather than actually to David. Such a spectacular display of failing to care much about your brother, I have never seen. However, David is still managing to wind Nick up quite a lot. Which is pretty nice.
- Declan had a party, and accidentally invited mostly men. What a suprise.
- And then he tried to get off with Alicia, who was recently seen flirting with Nathan.
- I mostly spent all of the party scenes imagining what Nathan's reactions to them would be, and how hard he would judge them all. And imagining Declan imagining Nathan's reactions to them. Which, given that he was apparently trying to be as lowbrow and lairy as possible (pinball games and booze?), was possibly the whole idea.
- I do think that everyone in the village might just go mad now they don't have Nathan to focus all of their hatred and rage on. Ryan and Declan at least. Well, we'll see.

Date: 2010-12-04 11:27 pm (UTC)I just don't like being a wind up merchant being presented as a) a main characteristic and b) a *good* characteristic. Maybe I am a bit of a humourless stick in the mud, but I try to avoid people like that irl because it makes me so uncomfortable. And I don't think the actress is very good either.
She keeps being horrible to Alicia, but luckily Alicia does not seem to be cowed by this (although there was an element of competition - please don't let this continue!).
I am not very impressed with Mia either - she's a bit too Spiky Action Girl, but I think this may be a fault of the standard soap introduction thing than her actual character. I'm hoping she calms down.
What is interesting is how the Maceys are obviously as wealthy as the Wyldes, but we are not supposed to be judging them in the same way. Mia seems to me to have a lot of the same attitudes as Maisie and (to a lesser extent) Nathan, but I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to hate her.
What I find weird is how much Declan has regressed since Nathan left. i was going to say the Wyldes, but Maisie is still there! It's weird because I had the impression he was supposed to be sort of cultured and a gentleman, but as soon as Nathan's not there to hate/impress, he goes off and becomes a standard lad? Isn't he a bit old for that?
Excellent. He should. He could even ask Nathan for advice.

Date: 2010-12-05 12:57 am (UTC)I know exactly what you mean about Mia - the number of times I have seen female characters on soaps be introduced as 'wild' and 'crazy' by having them get off with someone immediately or run around stealing cars or messing people around for no reason, it's starting to wear a bit thin. Also, even though Cain totally deserved it, demonstrating that someone doesn't take any crap by having them knee someone in the balls, for not much reason, is a bit OTT. But as you say, a lot of characters get introduced similarly (see Nathan and Maisie turning up in a pink cadillac for no reason), so I am waiting to see how she develops for a few months. After they get through the initial 'show how crazy and interesting she is' phase. I don't mind her though, so far. I can't say I'm too excited to see how far the Mia/Adam/Scarlet storyline goes, though.
No, the Wyldes had posh accents, so obviously they were dicks and thought they were better than everyone else. Unlike the Maceys, who just like messing people around and wandering around on land their parents own without introducing themselves to the tenants. It's kind of ridiculous, especially since we know for a fact that the Wyldes were as self-made as the Maceys, given that Mark made his fortune while he was with Natasha, I think, and she sounded like she started out as a model who had nothing as well. And yeah, depending on when Declan or Ella made their fortunes Mia's possibly as born into it as Nathan or Maisie were. But possibly the point the show is trying to make is that they're very different characters from the Wyldes, and naturally more friendly and nice than them. We'll have to wait and see if they portray them that way successfully, if so.
I have a feeling the way Declan has regressed is deliberate to be honest. I didn't see his entrance, but yeah, he seemed to be pretty cultured when he came in, and then he got together with Natasha and obviously she liked him, and they kind of did those sorts of things together. And now he's found out what Natasha was really like, and to a lesser extent all of the Wyldes, including Nathan, he's sort of trying to distance himself from that, or pretend he never liked it, by trying to be more 'normal'. Which is kind of what I meant in the point I made above. And if he is repressing the feelings he had for Natasha (/Nathan), it's probably going to make him act a bit immaturely, which makes sense too. Either that, or the show was just trying to 'hilariously' show that he was all happy to start living the bachelor lifestyle again, and then his wife turned up, oh no. I'm mostly assuming my version though.

He could ask him what webpages he looked up on the internet about framing someone.
