Soap characters I love at the moment:

  1. Nathan Wylde from Emmerdale. Oh Nathan Wylde. He of the pointlessly turned up jacket collar. I love him. I love him. He is a pathetic, spoiled, angry rich boy who's mostly trying to cope with the fact that his mum killed his dad and then covered it up and refused to confess to the police about it, and now mere months later, has a new boyfriend. He's mostly wandering around sulking and fuming at the moment. The other day we started a scene with him just laid on the couch, fully clothed, curled up staring into space, and it was mostly so his mum Natasha and her new boyfriend could come in behind him and not see him and act all lovey dovey before he could be all 'I AM HERE AND I HATE YOU BOTH'. It was brilliant. He is taking his anger out on his family at the moment, and especially getting mad at his mum, but we do also get quite a lot of scenes of him just stood around staring on his own, so he is clearly having a difficult time with it, not just pitching a fit.

Meanwhile, his actor is giving interviews and saying things like 'he seems to be feeling a slightly inappropriate emotion towards his mother', and it makes me very happy. It would make me more happy, but I really don't like Natasha at the moment. As much as I disliked her husband and was happy that she shot him, I find it hard to be on the side of a woman who told her son she'd killed his father ('accidentally'), then told him he was talking 'nonsense' when he wanted to tell the police so they could like, dig him up and give him a proper burial, then tried to emotionally blackmail him into helping her cover it up. No dice, Natasha. I kind of ship Nathan with her new boyfriend Declan, because he does stand up to Nathan and Nathan probably needs that, but he's also kind of a dick. So I am left just loving Nathan, oh Nathan, I love him.

  2. Lenny Lyons from Casualty. Lenny is a junior doctor who grew up largely in care, and is not very good with his social skills, and tries his best to cover it up if he does have a regular emotion. A while back his old friend from a care home came into the Emergency Department, and Nick Jordan found out while asking him about it that he used to be in care, and then decided that he was going to mentor Lenny. All the junior doctors had to mentored by an older surgeon, and Nick decided to mentor Lenny. And I love them. Lenny mostly just tries to jump around and get his attention, partly for his career and partly, I think, because omg Nick Jordan. And Nick is getting all enamoured of the idea of having children, because he is settled down in a relationship with Dr Zoe Hanna now, and he has a brain tumour and probably only about 5 years to live. She wasn't entirely sure about having kids, partly because she hasn't told him she's pretty much infertile, and he was trying to talk her into it a few weeks ago, and convince her that she was perfectly nurturing, and Lenny turned up wanting to help out on her interesting case and Nick pretty much encouraged her to take him on and take his hand on the case. He basically wanted her to mother Lenny. THEY SHOULD JUST ADOPT LENNY. He is already full grown, and has no parents to speak of, and would clearly LOVE TO HAVE NICK AS A DAD. I just watched last weekend's episode, and Lenny and another junior doctor Yuki found the source of an infection that had been killing off a few patients, despite screwing it up quite a lot along the way, and Nick made the effort of calling him over, and telling him he'd done a good job, and patted his shoulder to emphasise the point. It was amazing. So yeah. I love Lenny and Nick Jordan. I mean, it's no Toby/Nick Jordan, but it's INCREDIBLE all the same.

So it's mostly jerks that need father figures I seem to be loving at the moment. Oh well, at least I have a type.

I also went to see Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time today. It was a perfectly fine movie, not particularly brilliant, and I wasn't terribly convinced by the heterosexual romance. But it was fun, and the stunts and fight scenes were good, and I'm glad he got to rule slashily ever after with his brothers at the end. Even if it did take the time to pretty much blast out of the water my idea for an AU where his uncle won and turned back time so his brother died and he was king, and went to get Datsan from the streets anyway, because omg, pretty. Hmph.

Lots of people hate Nathan, and he has done some pretty bad things, but I just really love him. I quite like sulky characters sometimes, that might be part of it. But he is actually really beautiful sometimes (in my opinion) and clearly a bit mentally unstable, and I just LOVE HIM OH GOD.

His mum was just properly weird about the whole thing when she told him - it was the day after he'd had a horrible showdown with his dad's secret first/other wife during which he pretty much sexually assaulted her, which was awful, but his mum came back and he really was on the points of coming to terms with how bad that was ('maybe I did go a little bit too far'). Then she went nuts because he'd been showing someone around the woods where her husband was buried when she'd forbidden him to bring anyone to the grounds, and he realised something more than what she was saying was upsetting her, and he said to her that she could tell him what was wrong, no matter what it was, because she could trust him and he would help her. Then he asked if his dad had been back in touch, and said he wouldn't blame her, it was alright, and that he wanted to talk to him too. And then she told him his dad was dead, and lied that it was an accident, and he went a bit crazy and ended up in the woods digging in the soil with his bare hands, and he wanted her to go to the police, and she wouldn't, she properly said something like 'stop talking nonsense'. And he could clearly tell that it hadn't been an accident, and she just properly never seemed to even consider the idea of going to the police, even though she'd just told her kid that his dad was dead and she had killed him, and if he helped her to cover it up he'd have to lie about it to his brother and sister, and it was just horrible, honestly. I can completely understand him being even more fucked up than before, and a bit angry about her suddenly having a new boyfriend, given that all of that happened.

I hope they adopt Lenny, I love the fact that different doctors are mentoring the F2s and that actually means something, and there's sort of an emotional bond there. And Nick pushing Zoe to have children when she is clearly not that interested (or is saying she isn't - she did want kids before, when she found out she was infertile, didn't she, but she's telling Nick she doesn't) is pretty horrible. They could solve all their problems in one go. I would also like Toby back, but sadly I think it's more likely that we'll see more of the counsellor like we have been doing, given that his actor and Ruth's actor are seeing each other. Hmph.

I saw the omnibus this weekend, and OH, the bit where he was just laying on the sofa being miserable.

It's funny, I find him a lot more attractive in profile than face on? IDK.

Wow, that sounds...incredibly odd. I can see how it screwed him up a lot (and how wrong I had the plotline! I hadn't done much reading so assumed it was a vague he-was-a-bastard kind of thing, esp as him disappearing must have been plausible, for the police not to be involved?). I shall have to do some more research.

ETA: HOWEVER, then he does something like be rude to people for no reason, and I hate him again. But OTOH, I am now watching the March episodes, and they're kind of amazing.

I LOVED Lenny this week. Calling a murderer 'psycho' (for a while I thought the murderer was going to start focusing on him, not Adam), being utterly tactless, and then being Robin to Yuki's Batman at the end <3.

He has a slightly strange face, but often a slightly beautiful face. Sometimes it depends on his hair. Mostly I can't believe how beautiful his eyes are, oh my god.

No, it was really weird. And screwed up. And now people who hate him on the soap forums bang on about how he blackmailed his mother over her killing his dad, and I know that he did, but actually, not till after she'd told him to either help cover up his dad's murder or get out of her house and never come back. And just, oh my god dude.

I don't know how much you know about his dad (Mark). He was married years ago to Faye, but while they were together they'd gotten into debt, and he'd decided to get away from it by running away and letting her and his family think he was dead. His name wasn't even Mark Wylde, it was Daniel Lamb. So she turned up again when she saw him in a magazine in a photoshoot with the family, and she'd actually been pregnant, unbeknownst to him, when he ran away, so Ryan is her and Mark's son.

Natasha found out about it, but they wanted to keep it a secret so the kids wouldn't be hurt, and Faye hadn't even told Ryan. But Ryan and Nathan became good friends without knowing they were half-brothers, and then Mark decided he still loved Faye a bit (after he saw her and thought she was seeing other men usually), and they started having a sort of affair. And Ryan and Maisie started seeing each other, secretly (because he'd been dating her friend Katie), without knowing they were half-brother and -sister. In true soap fashion, it all came out about Mark and Faye and Ryan and Maisie on the same day, and Natasha told Maisie and Ryan that they were brother and sister so they wouldn't sleep together. And then it just all came out. Ryan was angry at Faye. Natasha and the kids told Mark to leave, but while Nathan was out with Maisie looking after her and going to get Will (their little brother), Mark came to the house and got a gun, left a note saying he was going to kill himself, and went out to the woods. Natasha found it, went out after him just to stop him from hurting himself, but he kept going on about in a weird, possibly manipulative way, asking if he could come back then, if she didn't want him to kill himself. Then he decided he couldn't kill himself, gave Natasha the gun, but said he was going back to the house, he wasn't going to run away again, but in a way that basically meant he was ignoring what his family wanted him to do. And Natasha was just amazed he was still trying to call the shots, even then, and eventually turned around and shot him in the back. And then buried him. And yeah she totally lied to Nathan about what had happened in the woods, it wasn't really an accident. And she kept it pretty much a secret until she confessed to Nathan, which you've seen in the clips below.

So no, it was mad, and I can completely understand all the Lamb/Wylde kids being a bit fucked up. Maisie actually had a breakdown over what happened with Ryan and ended up going to a clinic and getting professional help. So she's a bit more balanced, but so far only Nathan knows that his dad's dead and his mum killed him. And that's basically where we are now. Also, I will stop making my soap comments so long when soaps stop being so complicated. Although I LOVE IT, DUDE.

Yeah no, I thought he might start focusing on Lenny, which might have been interesting. But no, it was all about Adam. I know he has had a horrible, horrible time, but I'm not really a big fan of episodes that are all about his pain, or how amazing he is. Although it was pretty sad, him getting that letter about Harry, I guess.
