Tony and Maria, again. I love them.

I'm going to talk about Tony and Maria again. Don't worry, I probably won't be doing this for much longer. The storyline is basically finished, except for Tony apparently making a brief reappearance in spring next year, and I'm not going to able to get any dvds or get hold of the canon in any other way. It's one of the few drawbacks of soap fandoms. For some reason they don't seem to want to put their hours and hours of canon on dvds for the public to buy. Whatever.
Anyway. I have realised that I've been talking about Tony and Maria, probably somewhat incoherently, for about a week now without actually saying who they are or what their storyline actually is. Essentially, Maria was married to a man named Liam, and Liam's sister-in-law Carla was going out with a man called Tony, after her husband (Liam's brother) died. Liam and Carla had long-standing mostly denied feelings for each other, and slept together at one point, and Tony found out about it at around the same time Liam decided he really was in love with Carla, and was going to leave Maria for her if Carla left Tony. Tony, in a jealous rage, arranged to have him killed, and Maria turned up at the scene (without actually knowing he'd been killed, sadly) and started saying that he couldn't be dead because they were going to have a baby. She hadn't told him before because their last baby ended up being stillborn, and she didn't want to say anything too early on just in case something happened.
Tony and Carla ended up getting married, and Maria was grieving for Liam, but then she found out that Liam and Carla had sort of been having an affair and that Tony had known about it before Liam died. Maria worked out pretty quickly that Tony had had Liam killed and how he'd done it, and started accusing him, but nobody believed her. Tony denied it, and there was some stuff with another resident who he almost killed but then sent away instead, and then brought back to make Maria look mad after she'd been accusing him of killing that guy as well. As a result, Maria stopped believing he'd killed Liam, but Carla was suspicious about it all and started digging, and eventually asked Tony if he'd killed Liam herself, and he confessed. But he'd clearly been feeling guilty since the night he'd done it, and was clearly an emotional wreck, and Carla probably felt guilty because he'd done it because of her affair with Liam, so she ended up just fleeing the street and not telling anyone. Tony was depressed, and still feeling guilty, and seeing Maria walking around the street heavily pregnant reminded him of it even more and made him feel worse, so he ended up helping her, and they got on pretty well, and they ended up growing closer. He supported her through her pregnancy because she was on her own and worried about something happening to the baby again, like it had with her first pregnancy. He ended up moving in with her when she was nearing the end of her pregnancy, and at one point they went for a walk on a long, deserted beach to try to induce labour, and it ended up working pretty well and he had to deliver her baby in a beach hut.
He was pretty in love with her baby, and he'd been having feelings for her he'd been avoiding what with her being the wife of the man he'd had killed and all. She'd been avoiding her feelings for him because her husband had died less than a year before. But eventually they ended up starting a relationship, with him sort of thinking that if he was a husband to her and a father to her baby he'd make up for taking Liam away from them. But it was convenient for him, because he really seemed to be in love with Maria, and he loved her baby. After a while he asked her to marry him, and she said yes. But Carla heard about it and came back, demanding that he leave Maria. Tony almost had her killed, but then ran in to stop it, and in the confusion Carla thought she'd killed his guy he sent to kill people, and agreed to leave the street again so she wouldn't end up in prison. It turned out she hadn't killed Tony's guy, but he didn't tell her that, obviously. However, the stress of it all caused Tony to have a heart attack a few days later, and when he was in the hospital with Roy (another guy on the street who Tony had had a few run-ins with before), he told Roy he'd killed Liam, thinking he was going to die. He didn't die, and he tried to convince Roy he just felt guilty about Liam's death because it had happened on his stag night, and he was full of drugs, but Roy didn't believe him.
He didn't have any proof though, so he just ended up stalking Tony round the street. Tony, still feeling guilty about Liam, couldn't cope with it and ended up threatening to kill Roy, and then Roy's wife Hayley when it became obvious she knew, and Roy and Hayley went to the police. The police took Tony in and interrogated him, and then had to let him go because he was still denying it and there was no proof, but Maria found out and none of his lies really worked with her - as he'd known they almost certainly wouldn't - so he went to Roy's house, and then went out to the canal where Roy was out looking for wildlife, and tried to kill him by pushing him in the canal, knowing Roy couldn't swim. He started walking away, but then changed his mind and ran back, jumped into the water and pulled Roy out. He gave him CPR and checked he was okay, and then walked off down to the police station and confessed to Liam's murder. Maria, of course, found out for definite that he had killed Liam, and was pretty heartbroken about it. And angry. But mostly heartbroken. And that was basically last week.
I sincerely thought that was going to take a paragraph, maybe two, and now this is a long post and I've not really said anything except what I knew about them. But anyway. It's good background information.
It's sort of awful, because it is clearly a bit weird and fucked up, and he even almost tried to kill Maria that one time, and she almost tried to kill him, before they ended up getting together. But Tony really did seem to love Maria, even more than he loved Carla. And he might be the first boyfriend of Maria's, as far as I can remember, that didn't cheat on her or leave for someone else, and unfortunately he was a murderer. I could be ENTIRELY HAPPY if Coronation Street runs an AU of their own soap, maybe at a different time, where Liam and Maria never got together, or Liam left her for Carla earlier on in their relationship, and Tony just comes into it as a ruthless businessman guy no-one quite likes, and he and Maria just fall in love. And there are no tragic endings to ruin it. Maybe they'll do that.
Do you want to see some beauty? That was mostly the point of my post. In this Youtube clip, there are clips of Maria and Tony, of the part before he delivers her baby on the beach, and one of him being all psycho when she was accusing him of killing Liam, before they got together. And in between those, you get to see Samia Smith (who plays Maria) talking. And Philip Schofield and Fern Cotton also talking. It's sort of a win either way.
ITV also did some clips on their website of "Tony's diary", which is basically Gray O'Brien, who plays Tony, saying the same confession to Maria onto a tape in three different ways, depending on whether Tony decided to get around the Roy situation by killing himself, killing Roy, or turning himself in to the police. It's here. The last one, "surrender", is by far the saddest, because it's really quiet and resigned and practical, and it's the most in character, really, especially given that it what he ended up doing. At the end (of all of them really, but the third video is the best), he calls Maria "my darling", and it wouldn't be nearly as painful if I hadn't been thinking of a bunch of sad love songs and how they relate to Tony/Maria, and imagining him sort of singing Unchained Melody in his cell, after he gives himself up. Oh god.
The itv site also has this video of clips of Tony's good and bad sides, pretty much out of order from when they appeared in the show, but including the part where he actually delivers Maria's baby, and his really quite gay scene where he kills Liam. I hate those adverts they put on all their videos, although I guess they have to have them. But the clips are pretty good.
How about some RIDICULOUSLY CHEERFUL Maria/Tony vids? There are a few Maria/Tony vids on Youtube, and some of them are quite sad, as befits the storyline really. But I think I love the cheerful ones the most of all. There is I Only Wanna Be With You and I Love It When We Do. They're made by the same person, so some of the clips are the same, but there's quite a bit of different stuff in each one.
And some slightly sadder ones. For some reason this person hasn't put the song title anywhere in the vids or in the info, but there's this one, and this one, which is more of a narrative since they started getting closer. Both are pretty good though.
If I had the clips or the episodes, and I had any kind of vidding capabilities, I would vid Tony and Maria to a bunch of songs. I've already said, most songs at the moment, especially love songs, seem to be Maria/Tony songs. For example, I just put iTunes on and the first song that came on was Trouble by Coldplay. God. I want to do a Tony vid to Poker Face by Lady Gaga. Because they can't read his poker face. And he is marvellous. I love Tony/Maria. And Tony. And Maria. And Gray O'Brien. And Samia Smith. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.
This week Carla came back to the street and brought some gay with her. She to Maria's door like Maria was her estranged wife, and then hugged her after Maria admitted that yes, she had been in love with Tony. Carla asked her if she'd been in love with Tony, and Maria looked away, with an angry, sad look on her face, and nodded, slightly, once. It was awful. But then Carla hugged her, so it slightly made it better. Then Carla was off talking to her friend Leanne, and told Leanne she was a really, really good mate and kissed her on the cheek. It was great. I love Carla. Meanwhile, Roy was sitting on his couch, watching tv and refusing to get up or do much else. Including talk to people. He was probably missing his crazy boyfriend. I used to wonder how or why I could slash Roy and Tony, sort of. But I think articles like these might be why. And Carla/Maria is always great. They should all just run away together. That would also be an acceptable AU soap, Coronation Street. And probably a great one.
