The Kings broke up last night. For the 200th time. No-one killed each other, but it was still quite good. Carl was like the COOLEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. They were doing a whole thing with Matt being really horrible to Carl and Jimmy at work, and Carl not liking it, and they were meant to be putting in a bid for a refuse contract (the side of the business Carl runs) against that of a new old businessman that was getting up their noses. And they went to the council house to present their bids and get the decision, and it was all very tense, and then the council said they were giving it to KD Refuse, a business none of them had heard of. And then Carl stood up and said, "I'm KD Refuse". AND MATTHEW JUST LOOKED AT HIM. The looking was brilliant.
And then it turned out that Carl had got backing from the new old businessman who tried to seduce him the other week, and they were going to use the new contract to set up a new company, and Carl was TOTALLY LEAVING THEM. And then they went back to the King offices to argue, and they eventually got onto the fact that Carl killed their dad, and he was all "Oh, I was wondering when you'd bring that up". And he said he'd done it because their dad had tried to control everything, and he'd only done what they didn't have the guts to do, and Matthew went for him because he has slightly beautiful daddy issues. And then they were all "GET OUT", and he was all "Sorry, but I'm still a shareholder. See you at the next board meeting". 'Where they'll be fucking him harder than ever' was obviously missed out, but still. And then Matthew trashed Carl's house because he JUST COULDN'T TAKE IT. And it was BRILLIANT. I love it when they fight.
And then tonight was beautiful. Carl was all ready for revenge on Matt, but the new old businessman decided to send him away "to get his focus back", clearly fearing the power of make-up sex. And Jimmy tried to convince Matthew that they should go round to see Carl and sell him all their old refuse equipment, to "see what they could get out of him". And Matthew refused at first, but eventuallyhad to see Carl did, and they went round and he invited them into his office, and they were all "So was it [the new old guy's] train set that lured you here, or his pretty nurse?". And Carl pointed out that the nurse was prettier than either of them, which was HURTFUL, JUST HURTFUL, CARL. And then Carl went round to their offices to finalise the deal with Jimmy, because Matthew wouldn't speak to him again, and Jimmy decided that he loved Carl anyway, and they shook hands, and Carl wore a beautiful coat, and oh. And Jimmy asked him, really, why he'd stole the contract and stabbed them in the back, and Carl was all "Because...Matt never took me seriously!", and Jimmy said "Well I did!". THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL. OH.
I love it when the Kings fight, because then you can IMMEDIATELY start imagining how they are eventually going to get back together. Like the time Matt left them to go be with his slightly horrible, manipulative girlfriend who they hated, and then Jimmy collapsed and Matthew raced down a garden path to get in the ambulance with him. There might be something brilliant, like a melodramatic car crash, where Carl and Matthew keep arguing and then one day it suddenly looks like Matthew's going to get hit by a car, and Carl runs over to push him out of the way and gets hit himself. And then Matthew REFUSES to leave the hospital until he wakes up. And he and Jimmy both just hang around, and other people try to visit, and the new old businessman tries to visit, and they just look at him, and it becomes very clear that, beyond anything else, Carl is their little brother. THAT WOULD BE GREAT. SO WOULD ANYTHING ELSE.
It feels like it's going a bit too far when you find yourself singing Amy Winehouse songs at Emmerdale. But then I was singing it at another pairing the other day, so it's probably not personal. I can't help it if "So we are history/Your shadow covers me" covers a lot of pairings QUITE BEAUTIFULLY. And Carl knows that Matt's no good. And they know that Carl's no good. But then the other week Sam was talking to his dead wife Alice for his storyline, and I managed to sad myself out by thinking "And I'll never get used to not living next door to Alice". So maybe it is the show. Tonight had Donna and Marlon being quite beautiful talking about the name "Dingle". And after some days of a young woman being terrorised by an ex-con who keeps threatening her newly-imprisoned husband if she sends him back inside and her adopted daughter if he doesn't help her, which is CLEARLY what I wanted to see, and me thinking it would be great if Debbie Dingle, the little girl's real mother, who'd been taking more of an interest in the little girl lately, found out and helped her get rid of him, THEY ACTUALLY DID IT ON THE SHOW. Which was great. Debbie is beautiful, and Jo (the young woman) is quite lovely too nowadays. She helps her husband run a farm and wears a leather jacket. Somewhere along the line of watching and loving the Kings I seem to have taken an interest in other characters on the show. I don't know how that happened.
