girlofprey: (Sawyer Don't Own Emotion)

Sawyer is still the prettiest! And Keeper Of All Secrets. And I love him!

And you know, maybe this is bias, but I really hate the way all/most of the other characters treat him. Yes, he is a bastard, and manipulative, and I would probably hate him if stuck on an island with him in real life, BUT - what is their attitude to him? 'Omg, give him the silent treatment and make him stand in the corner, he can't be in our gang no more'? How twelve year-old? It's like those annoying kids in Problem Child. And he's shown he can be nice sometimes, like with Claire and the giving back of passports for the mass funeral. And yes, he is/was a bit racist, and that's not great. But frankly, the oft-used 'that Redneck', with all it's unpleasant connotations is not that much less of a slur, and even in rebuttal only makes them as bad as he is. And also, y'know, they've threatened, tortured and stabbed him at this point in the season. Why am I still supposed to like and sympathise with characters who treat him like utter dirt? (see: JACK)

The only one who is vaguely nice to him is Kate, and her feelings mostly seem to border on affectionate emotional manipulation. I know she's been through a lot/some stuff, but dude. His father shot his mother and himself when he was eight years old. Possibly she doesn't know that he got to watch/listen to it all, but still, referring to it as 'not being able to get over his baggage' is - wtf? IT'S QUITE SOME BAGGAGE! OF THE KIND THAT LEAVES LASTING IMPRESSIONS! Dude.

Anyway anyway anyway. Leaving aside the fact that they should all love him and watch him and touch him, and offer him tea when he looks even vaguely upset, I really have to take issue with the episode titled 'All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues', referring to Jack. Because Sawyer's daddy issues are CLEARLY THE GREATER. I take Jack father's calling him "Cowboy" as clear proof of this.

Leaving aside his real father and all that mess (who might have killed him if he'd found him, who knows), he took the name of and followed in the footsteps of the man who destroyed his family, and who he spent his whole life obssessed with. "Sawyer" is more his daddy than his real father was, at this point. And if you want to get Oedipal, our!Sawyer is now trying to kill the man who slept with his mother - indeed. And when he took Jack Sr.'s "fatherly advice", it just screwed him up even more! He has daddy issues with everyone. It's great.

And: "Tennessee", eee! "James", eee! :)
