I should really make an end-of-year post in the...45 minutes we have left. Oh. Hum. I steal
nerdcakes' template, like so many others before me!
This was the year I found fandom. Like, PROPERLY found fandom, not just in a lurking, reading fic, omg I wish I could be in that fandom sort of way. I met a whole bunch of people, and yes I sort of met them last year when I actually got my Livejournal and Green Wing and so on, but I got to know them this year, and it was good. Also I got a paid journal and 100 icons. Wheee!
This has also been the year of waiting for the Green Wing DVD >:(
This was the year I got vaguely less than excellent results in final exams in my academic studies, which made me very depressed for a little while, and then gave me a certain masochistic pleasure, and then made me just think about all the other ways in which I am fairly good and think 'ah, well'
This was the year in which my nephew was born and I learned that babies are actually Very Great and have huge eyes. And that I don't want to have one for many, many years. My nephew learned to crawl, to semi-walk, to say 'ooh', to wave and to point this year. And I think seeing me makes him smile. I do love him.
This was the year I worked, even if not for actual money. I worked in a charity shop and learned how great charity shops are, and got a whole bunch of cheap bargains. I worked in a museum and learned a bunch of interesting things about my town, and was given biscuits and vintage photographs and gold. This was the year I learned I can get to places on time and work well if I have to, and people will like me and want to see me come back.
This was the year I started doing stuff I was really interested in at uni. This was the year I got to pick my own projects for essays and such, and also the year I learned that this will not necessarily inspire me to work on them or write on them. Especially when there is fandom to compete with.
This is the year I discovered Nick Cave. Omgsogood. Thank you, housemate Jos.
This is the year I went to see a Harry Potter film at midnight, and couldn't stop giggling in the cinema foyer, and had rubbish seats, stayed up an hour after I got home just thinking about lines and characters and plotbunnies and omgsoverygood.
This is the year I learned to do footnotes in Microsoft Word using the Footnote command, instead of just tiny numbers and writing my own endnotes. I was near-hysterical with joy on this day. I also learned how to do italics with Ctrl+i, which is similarly shiny.
Although it seems like it's been much, much longer, this is the year I first watched Sea of Souls, and fell in love with curly-haired Craig, and was rewarded by episode 5 with his doomed tragic love for John Hannah. And now, a mere 11 months of obsession later, I have a proper fandom. We have icons. We have songvids. We have fanmixes. We have1 fic. We have a dead gay OTP. What do you have? Nothing!
This is the year I made my first community.
This is the year I made my first icons.
This is the year I made my first fanmix
This is the year I learned that no matter how cracked-out my fandoms and pairings are, there is almost certainly at least one other person out there who loves them, and I should stop being all 'omg, I'm the only one!' and just write the damn fic!
This is the year I wrote fic. I wrote fic last year. But this year I wrote fic not thinking 'omg, this is so pointless, I can't stop thinking about it, I'll just knock it out really quickly and get on withwatching TV uni work'. This is the year I wrote fic spontaneously, in response to tragic events in my favourite shows. This is the year I wrote fic I knew other people would like even if I wasn't that bothered, and learned that it was just as enjoyable as writing my own pairings. This is the year I got a lot of lovely feedback and found out I could actually write quite well, and write what people liked to read, and could be a fic writer.
This is the year I fell in love with David Tennant. And Adrien Brody. And a whole bunch of other people probably too numerous to count, but who I love and who have enriched my fandom life exceedingly.
This is the year I watched Night Watch. And joined fandoms where I didn't know anybody, and learned that despite all the terrible spelling and wank out there, this internet place is really a pretty great place to meet really pretty great people.
This is the year I met people. For real and in real life. This is the year I booked a weekend in a hotel all by myself, and caught a train and didn't fall off, and had some really actually fabulous conversations with Newcastle taxi drivers, and learned Newcastle was really pretty. This was the year I found out all the people who were text online had arms and legs and hair and ate cake and had arguments and drove and were real and were great. This was the year I sat in a room and watched a slashy show and SCREAMED OUT LOUD at the slashy bits while all the people around me screamed as well. This was the year I giggled helplessly at random pictionary mpreg and wrote pairings in sand on the beach and it was far too cold outside, and the waiter/butler was clearly gay.
This was the year I got an iPod and now my ears ring all the time. This is the year I learned the joy of walking around pointlessly in a shop with the thing you want to buy in your hands so you don't have to go talk to the checkout people until the song is finished.
This is the year I bought a Damn Fine Umbrella.
This is the year I had to beg my parents for money for the first time ever, and was the victim of Credit Fraud, omg!
This is the year I found out the Tesco Value truffles were omgsoverygood.
This is the year I went out all dressed up for Halloween, and made horror movies on my housemates phone, and drank Deadly Sins cocktails and had fun.
This is the year I had a Proper Argument with a friend, where I was partly in the wrong, and had to wait till she'd cooled down to talk to her, and then everything was fine again, except not, except better than ever.
This is probably a bit much, but this is the year I've felt most like I've had a Proper and Individual Personality to date, not just a vaguely resenting the world, I'll-show-you-when-I-grow-up! fist-shaking outlook. This is the year I had a bit of counselling and learned that a lot of things probably weren't my fault and I was in fact semi-normal, at least.
This has been a pretty good year :)
