Oh jobs where you have nothing to do can be awesome and also can be terrible. At least it's one where you can read and entertain yourself and don' t have to pretend to 'keep busy' because I find that the most soul destroying. The idea of you having time for books again is quite weird.
Hopefully you'll get used to the schedule quite quickly, and it'll just become routine and like you say, eventually there will be a paycheque and those are lovely.
