Hello all.
I finished the storyline in Saints Row 2. That's the main news in my life at the moment. Also I have a can of sour cream and onion Pringles.
They killed Dane Vogel. He was the main bad guy, sort of. I was sort of expecting it, but I'd also got round - as I often do - to shipping the charcter that is basically me/the main character with him, and was sort of hoping for the best. The best did not happen. It was kind of annoying though, because he really was sort of the main bad guy - they mentioned him pretty much from the beginning of the game, the main character had a tendency to say (without any input from me) "Dane Vogel and I are NOT gonna get along", and he was sort of the 'face' of Ultor, the evil corporation that got mentioned throughout the game. But then he didn't really do anything anywhere near as bad as what other people in the gang storylines did - even the stuff he DID do was sort of debatable, really - and his death was nowhere near as difficult or epic as the gang bosses' deaths were. It was weird in some ways, because given that there was only one neighbourhood left to gain when you start the Ultor quests, for a while I wondered if there'd only be one mission. Which there wasn't. But even in the gang quests you ended up killing a lieutenant or nearly killing the boss before they got away before you actually got a quest where you killed them. You got nothing like that for Dane Vogel. And you didn't even win anything, really - you beat the game, and got an attack helicopter, but you didn't beat Ultor and you never got to take over Saints Row (the last neighbourhood in the game).
So...I don't know. They sort of started making Dane Vogel slightly awesome, and then gave him a death that was both disappointing AND anticlimactic. I sort of can't tell if it was one of those cases where they want to make an enemy sort of pathetic but sort of a threat at the same time, and don't really get it right - or just the fact that he was a smarmy corporate executive, and not as badass as the gangs, so they just expected the player - maybe more in America than here - to hate him and want him to have a slightly rubbish death. Or, which is possibly quite likely, they wanted to show that the main character really was kind of a psychopath who'd kill anyone who got in their way, just because. I don't know. There were definitely obvious reasons why the main character would want to kill Dane Vogel, and it all sort of made sense, and it wasn't AWFUL. But it sort of also wasn't much cop as the ending to a massive, brilliant game where you'd done a lot of bigger, harder stuff before it. Other people have apparently said they found the end of the game quite anticlimactic too, so at least it's not just me who feels this way.
Mostly what I want to do at this point is read a bunch of fic about my main character and Dane Vogel, but that's sort of impossible, because the main character is massively customisable, so the one I made up basically only exists for me. Although it's a bit odd I suppose, because the character can only have a choice of six voices, and a lot of the characterisation comes from their voice acting. And the main character - no matter who they are - always does the same things in the cutscenes. So in terms of 'character' there might not be that much difference for everyone. But still, my character's mine, and no-one else is probably really going to have played her. And apart from anything else, I have looked at the fanfiction - and spoilered myself quite massively for Saints Row 3 in the process - and not a lot of it seems to be Dane Vogel-oriented. Although somebody did write slash. Which was quite sweet.
Anyway. Essentially the main character and Dane Vogel were both massive jerks, with different areas of expertise, and it seemed quite possible to me that might just decide to form a Jerk Alliance, and rule/fight over the city together. Also I decided that my character was called Darcy, and he was called Dane, and being called Darcy and Dane made them sound like a pair of evil twins, which was quite wicked. But the main character wasn't even called Darcy. And it was not to be.
I'm still playing the game though. There's still quite a bit of stuff to do outside of the main storyline, and I have finally managed to go through my many cars and customise them all till they're beautiful. The problem is that it might have been quite nice to go through the whole or most of the game with this set of beautiful cars. The other problem is that now my garage is full, and the rewards for a lot of the things left to do - rewards I actually WANT to get - are other, unique cars and vehicles, and getting those apparently deletes cars that are already in your garage. Cars I just spent quite a few hours making beautiful. I will have to go through them and delete some. Hmph.
Also it's quite special though, because I think TV Tropes said, the game doesn't exactly seem to know that Dane Vogel is dead. People on the street still say "he's a great guy, once you get to know him", he still calls into a radio station requesting a song every now and then, and my character STILL has a tendency to state "Dane Vogel and I are NOT gonna get along". It's like the game is having as hard a time letting go of him as I am. It's beautiful.
Also, it turns out that Shaundi - the main and pretty much only female secondary character - is voiced by Eliza Dushku. That makes two characters in the past few months who I've sort of loved, partly because of their voices, who turned out to be voiced and performed by Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Eliza Dushku. I don't know what your plan is, but it won't work! It's kind of nice though, video game character voices. Like finding out that Johnny Gat from Saints Row 2 is voiced by Daniel Dae Kim. And the main character in The Darkness is played by Miguel Alvarez from Oz. Happy days.
Anyway. Skyrim is still ongoing. I LOVE SKYRIM. And I recently found Blackreach, which has officially taken the title of most beautiful place in the game, for me. More beautiful even than Markarth. Where I did finally manage to get a house. But it's not terribly feasible for my character to just up and move underground, and to a place filled with monsters. So I have to sort of be content with having seen Blackreach, and perhaps going back to visit sometimes.
Also, I went to see Safe House. The first film I've been to see at the cinema for a couple of months, at least. But I've been looking forward to it since December, so I wanted to go. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't quite the storyline I was expecting from having read about the film, and I didn't find it particularly slashy, but I thought it was really really good. The main problem with it was that - being an action thriller - they shot it in sort of a grainy way, and everyone did a lot of muttering, so I wasn't always entirely sure what was going on. I sort of want to see it again just to try and fill in some gaps in things I didn't understand, and still don't. But perhaps that was the masterplan of the people making it. ::shakes fist:: Hollywood!
Oh, and, they didn't put on one of those "You are stealing films, STOP STEALING FILMS" adverts up before the film came on. But they did put on one of those annoying slow motion "Go to the cinema for the EXPERIENCE ads", and then flashed up the rules about not recording films TWICE. Way to be massively irritating, you guys.
