They could have started making a golden boat, and then slowly started taking away more and more gold to make crowns and goblets and rings and shirts with, until all they had left for the boat was a pole attached to a sort of plank, which mysteriously wouldn't float. And then they'd be all "Well, we tried our best. There was literally nothing more we could do." That would have been a perfectly reasonable escape attempt for them.
