girlofprey: (R for raygun)
I got The Witcher 3, which is a video game, because the guys in my local game shop kept recommending it to me, and people in general how great it and all the expansions and stuff for it is. So I got it - tried to get started on it last night. I knew there was going to be a huge patch (an update that fixes a bunch of bugs or problems the launched with), because people said there were a lot of bugs at the beginning that got fixed over time. I thought, okay, maybe that'll take about an hour. It took four hours. Or three and a bit. But a long time.

I managed to play maybe an hour of it last night. Booted it up again today - and there was another patch. Another hour of waiting, just for the game to update so I can play it.

Meanwhile it controls kind of weirdly compared to other games I've played lately, the speed of the camera makes my eyes go funny sometimes, all the bodies in it look weird, the main character has that gravelly voice that all Serious Fantasy Characters have to have apparently, and he talks to himself and I can't take him seriously. I just did a quest that 'recommended' I be level 2, and Geralt (our hero) talked to himself about how he had to make some potions and some oil for his blade before the final fight of the quest, and I did none of that and finished it anyway. And it's an interesting world - kind of. The Witcher's 'hook' is that it's a really morally grey world, and no matter what decision you make you'll always feel like maybe you made the wrong one. But mostly I just find it a little too grimdark.

A female herbalist turned up though. She was great. I hope she is a love interest and a constant companion. But there is a chance she'll be neither.

It's a fine game. But it's a bit of a slog. But maybe I'll love it. Who knows?
