girlofprey: (All's Well That Ends With Cake (DW))
Hello. My internet has been running oddly slowly all week and occasionally not letting me check my emails, so I haven't been on LJ much, except at work. It's funny that my computer didn't mind downloading 11 episodes of Heroes over the weekend, but there you go. In my spare time I have been hunting for Peter/Sylar fic. Of which there is some! I love big fandoms. And I kept getting CONTINUOUSLY KIDNAPPED BY RL. On Tuesday K called and asked if I wanted to help bake a cake for J's birthday. This probably sounds like a nice thing. It wasn't. The cake turned out to be a NIGHTMARE OF A CAKE. K didn't have a recipe or any measuring scales, so she called her mum and sort of scribbled down some items of food to mix. She didn't have a cake tin, so we used an oven roasting dish. We didn't know how long to cook it for, so just kept taking it out and poking it with a knife and being dismayed when goo came out. And when it went a bit black on top. It was going to be a Victoria sponge, but she hadn't thought of putting buttercream in it.

And while all the cooking was happening I had to roll out the icing, with no rolling pin, and then we decorated it. I almost wrote desecrated, and that might have been a fairly accurate description. After many decorating ideas were thrown out the window, we decided on a fantasy island. But there wasn't any blue for the sea, so it was just yellow on white. And then K did some trees with very detailed branches, which looked fairly bleak until she put some leaves on them. Then I started doing a sunset in the corner, complete with some quite good smearing I thought, and she decided to use the black icing in the pack (??) to do night in the other corner, and a moon, with silver balls for stars. Then she used angelica to put really dark grass on one half of the island. It was really a bit terrifying. Frankly, I'm not sure playing Patti Smith and the slightly scary Beatles album 'Rubber Soul' while we were cooking was a good idea. And then, the cake was cooked, and K sliced through it, marvelled at the stab-like knife mark through it and put a lot of jam in the middle, and we tried to put the icing on the cake, but it was too big, so we had to chop bits off and piece it back together again. And the silver balls kept rolling everywhere. Oh, it was a bit of a mess of a cake.

But J apparently quite liked it. And they brought me a piece last night when we went out for a drink for his birthday, and I have to say it did taste quite nice.

Tonight, I have to wash some pans, make dinner in them, have a shower, wash the pans again, and pack for tomorrow so I can go to my parents' straight after work. Unless the trains are running late because of weather. I have already paid my council tax though. Score one.
