Sea of Souls Episode One Series Threeeeeee!

Eeee, Craig! Was on my TV! :D

More coherent thoughts:

  • They appear to have completely given up the premise of 'is it real or isn't it? You'll never know!'. Which is part of what I thought made it so clever and good. And made plotbunnies where 'omg, they just ARE all psychic' slightly more gleeful. But I suppose they want to start 'sexing it up' now they've got established characters and such.

  • I thought the editing was a bit off at times. And the script. And it was a little anticlimactic. I'm putting this down to them still getting used to the whole 'one hour for one episode for one story' thing, and giving them the benefit of the doubt.

  • I'm still not entirely enamoured of new, composed, academic Craig. But the bits I love still shine through! He counts himself a child! And the iPod lives!

  • Why is Craig in the parapsychology department if he doesn't believe? At all? I mean, he's long been 'the cynic', but he did used to believe in some things. Like ley lines, and travelling stones. And he had a programme for determining psychic ability! Hmph. Must reveiw the Season 2 episodes, I think.

  • Also, he was a bit of an action hero in this, wasn't he? I mean, he's always been the leaping-in-front-of-a-gun, talking-smack-to-big-angry-people, stupidly instinctively brave type, but he's never been all that physical. In fact, doesn't he canonically get spooked when people get physically intimidating? Craig able to manhandle a bigger man, possessed by an angry, hard-faced criminal spirit who finally has his hands on the man he came back from the dead to kill? Able to smack his face into a mirror? Clearly Wade was 'giving him the strength' and rolling his eyes at how stupid his living!boyfriend is.

But that said:

  • Eeee, Craig! His eyes! His hair! His loveliness to people having a hard time emotionally because he is very sweet really! Yay.

  • MAN: 'Don't you believe people can talk to the dead?', CRAIG: 'I wish you could, believe me' BECAUSE HE WANTS TO TALK TO WADE!!!

  • CRAIG: 'In my experience, people who don't let themselves grieve come to regret it' - been doing some grieving yourself recently, Craig?

  • And I'm glad to see the show is keeping up its tradition of putting Craig in scenes with lovely, lovely ladies he has absolutely no chemistry with :D

  • Though he is quite content to hover over a possibly-still-violently-possessed man, and shout his name down long crowded corridors.

  • Am also glad to see the show is keeping up it's tradition of making me laugh at completely random moments.

PEOPLE: Quick, the violently-possessed man is escaping'
    CRAIG: ::runs and closes door::
VPM: ::falls to the ground:: 'Foiled, by the lack of an open doorway!'

Oh, Sea of Souls. Good show. Good show.

  • Is was probably wrong to see all the evidence of Monaghan's Tragic Past and think 'So that's why he's so resistant to Craig's gay puppy hero-worship love' - wasn't it?

  • It was probably also wrong that, when MAN said 'he's hungry!' possibly referring to his dead son, I thought 'it's a good thing you've got that mushroom soup, then'. Ah well

  • I did think the emotional, death-of-the-son thing was quite well done

  • I did also think the porn bit was unnecessary.

Final thoughts: eee, my show is back! Eee, Craig! But they're going to have to work a little harder to convince me to buy the DVD. Which I probably will anyway. Because, eee Craig! 2 out a possible five, Sea of Souls. Sort it out.

Most of you will not know what that was all about. La!

Hmm. Have finished fairytale essay. Am now on marathon House of Leaves reading session, which is awfully enjoyable, but needs to be over soon if I'm going to write on it. Still need to research labyrinth myths, read the rest of my tutor's Danielewski essay, and - decide what I'm going to write in the essay. And write it, finishing it with plenty of time to edit it and my other essays, preferably by Wednesday night, so I have the whole of Thursday till 3.30 to print them off and hand them in. And then I can start revising for my exams on the 18th and 19th. I am very tired, and going to bed at stupid o'clock quite often. But it will be over soon. Before the third episode of Sea of Souls! Yes.

And finally: Don't you think Bush looks tired?

Oh, it sounds a bit like they've tried to turn Craig into Gemmill from season one, whose stubborn refusal to believe in *anything* no matter what he saw didn't help the plot and really just made him irritating to have around. With any luck they'll pull back from that a bit. And I find the "action hero" business a bit worrying...

I don't know this Gemmill, and I don't care for his possession of my Craig >:(

I think they may be upping Craig's cynicism a bit because they're going to play up the paranormalness - specifically, Justine's 'gift'. Which continues to really annoy as a plotline, but..hmph. So he's going to 'start believing' in the weeks to come, I suppose, but still...hmmm.

Bit worrying, yes. Action parts are fine. Craig has always been willing to throw himself into the line of fire and probably chase people in cars. But he should not win fights! Never! Or at least not without a handily-nearby heavy object and some dumb luck!

There was still beautiful, recognisable Craig-ness, but...yes. They're taking him in some odd directions, I think.
