I am slightly achey today, but much less achey than yesterday. Hurrah.

Some things I did last night:

  • I found out that Scott Adams, the writer and artist of Dilbert which I used to read as a kid, is a massive dick. Essentially, he doesn't agree with people who complain about losing 'Men Rights', because women are like children and mentally handicapped people, there's no point arguing with them. Later he goes on to say that he doesn't mean women are like children or mentally handicapped people, just the you should treat them the same. And that you (men) should save their energy for other things than arguing. Like trying to get sex. Right, Scott Adams.

  • I made tiny weird banner of fannish woe:

    For use in similar situations.

  • I downloaded every track of the Vitamin String Quartet's tribute to Lady Gaga, which with some vouchers my dad gave me from his beer bottles, I only had to pay for one track of.

  • I watched the episode of Casualty where Jordan, in the middle of an operation, randomly talking to Toby about the Godfather, and the episode of Casualty where Dr Jordan and Toby seem to eventually be the only doctors left in the ED, and Jordan slowly starts to have some respect and regard for Toby. Oh. Having rewatched those episodes, I really do think it was genuinely meant to be clear that Toby was a bit in love with Jordan, or had a crush on him at least, and that Jordan was the person who made him think he might be gay. But Jordan wasn't gay, and Toby obviously wasn't getting the emotional response from him that he wanted, so he ended up sleeping with Ben, and falling in love with him (apparently), having realised he was probably gay. I think that's pretty much canon.

The thing that really annoys me or makes me slightly sad about Toby/Jordan though is the fact that - quite apart from Jordan not being gay (to our knowledge) - that he met Toby when he was worried about his apparent degenerative disease and in denial about it, and obsessed with still being useful and efficiency. I do think he was harder on Toby than he needed to be, even if maybe Toby wasn't really cut out for working in an emergency department. I mostly just feel like if they'd met at a different time they might have got on differently. And like if they'd got on well enough they'd have been perfect for each other, obviously. Some of the most beautiful scenes in the episodes I've been watching are the ones where Jordan walks around the place, treating people and being brilliant and shouting orders, and Toby just stands behind him, and then follows him when he walks off. Like his assistant. Ahhhh. One of my favourite plotbunnies for Casualty is still the one I got where - shortly after a bunch of people had left the show and they were just getting more and more short-staffed - eventually EVERYONE leaves the department, except Dixie and Jeff, but Jordan plows on trying to run it single-handedly. And then Toby comes back one day, just for a visit, and just because there is no-one else to ask Jordan asks him if he wouldn't mind lending a hand, and they ended up running the department between. It was a beautiful plotbunny, with Toby juggling patient files and the reception phone, and both of them trying to catch some sleep on empty patient beds whenever they can.

Probably one day I will stop mourning Toby/Jordan and keeping a vigil over all of TV for ever for any sightings of Matthew Needham. Maybe.

Then today, I don't know if it is Shark Week or Shark Day or something, but the Discovery Channel for full of shark documentaries. I watched Sharks: Are They Hunting Us? (the presenter concluded that no, unless we are acting like injured animals or prey or something they want to investigate (ie bite), they don't care), and Shark After Dark, which I think they mostly made because of the rhyme. It was a WONDERFUL WAY to start the day.
