New Town Killers picspam

Pairing Picspam!

New Town Killers: Alistair/Sean

So. I'm doing a picspam this week. If I do decide to do this regularly for a bit, I'll probably have a tone it down a little next time, because the idea was to try to do one per week so it wouldn't take all of my time, and so far I have spent a week doing one. Other ones probably won't be as focused on just two characters though. Or as based on running.

This will probably be massive. I did pretty admirably well getting it down from 3,917 screencaps (2,000 or so after I got rid of the copies), but even so. And the pictures will probably be huge because I am using Photobucket and I love them. But anyway. This is a pretty fucked up pairing, but I decided to start with that so people are aware of what to probably expect from me. So anyway.

New Town Killers is from 2009, and is basically a chase movie, which is a type of film I quite like. It's about a young man with no money who's sister is in debt, who suddenly gets an offer from two businessmen, in which they'll give him enough money to clear his sister's debt if he'll run around town trying to hide from them while they try to find them. The game starts at 9.00pm that night and if he makes it to 9.00am the next morning without being caught he gets the money. Eventually he agrees and gets to running, but pretty quickly after that things start to go horribly wrong. As you will see.

We start out at a very big, shiny building called 'Ethical Finances' where a man is watching a video on his laptop called 'Running Man IV':

Photobucket
Photobucket

We hear a reception desk conversation of a woman calling someone to say that a 'Jamie Stewart' is there, and then her saying that "Alistair will see you now". And then we meet Jamie:

Photobucket

I just want to say now that I may get confused later on in the picspam, because Jamie is may more a name I associate with teenage boys than with businessmen, so if things don't seem to make sense later that may be why. Anyway, over Jamie's walking we hear an interview between him and 'Alistair', which ends with Alistair asking him if he's sure he can do this, and Jamie asks when it starts, and Alistair says "It's started".

Photobucket

Then we meet Sean. Sean is a teenage boy who as you can see in the picture spends some of his nights running away from people very fast. It's not clear if he's doing things that are illegal, or just messing people about on rooves. We learn he's not afraid to jump off high things to get away from people though:

Photobucket

He spends the rest of the night messing around with his friend, Sam.

Photobucket

And getting harassed by the police for being young and clearly a bit poor in New Town, which as far as I can tell is the posh bit of Edinburgh. Also weird cars seem to be following him around lately:

Photobucket

But he's got other things to worry about. His sister is out clubbing, and while she's out he goes into her room and finds this:

Photobucket

And this:

Photobucket

Which doesn't bode well. Anyway, he goes to sleep watching the news - which includes an item about an 18 year-old boy who looks a lot like the man in Alistair's video being found shot dead in some woods near the city - and wakes up to find a female gangster woman has come around to tell his sister her boss wants the money Sean's sister borrowed back and to gay her up.

Photobucket
Photobucket

And if you were wondering, his sister is Annie from Life On Mars. Anyway, the gangster woman says her boss wants his money back by the next day, and Sean's sister Alice says she can't get it by then. The woman suggests maybe she could do a job for the people she's working for instead, like going to Amsterdam and fetching a small package back. Sean overhears this and comes in and gets her to go, and then tells his sister she can't go to Amsterdam and asks how much she owes. She doesn't want to tell him, but eventually says that it's £8,000. He tells her he knows about the credit card bill, and says that altogether she owes £12,000. And it needs paying back partly tomorrow, and the rest of it very soon afterwards. Hmm.

But it might be okay, because Sean has a new job. It's in a restaurant, and it's less of a waiter's job and more of a toilet attendant's job than he was expecting, but still.

Photobucket

It turns out that being a toilet attendant is really, really boring. So boring that Sean falls asleep.

Photobucket

BUT WHO IS THIS MYSTERIOUS DARK FIGURE SNEAKING AROUND WHILE SEAN IS ASLEEP?

Photobucket

Taking things out of a customer who is in the cubicle's pocket?

I can't really begin to explain how much I love that fact that the first time Alistair and Sean really meet is when Sean is asleep. Eee.

Anyway, this mysterious figure then turns the taps on full blast.

Photobucket

Photobucket

It's Alistair.

And Sean, wanting to do a good job of being a toilet attendant now that he is awake, get up and without prompting, starts brushing off Alistair's coat:

Photobucket

Photobucket

To which Alistair responds by CLOSING HIS EYES. That is not a blink, that is Alistair closing his eyes because Sean is brushing off his coat, and he is psycho/it's so good.

Then Jamie walks in and stares at them, and Alistair is all:

Photobucket
"Hello Sean"

Sean is confused, but Alistair says he wants to make Sean a proposal.

Photobucket

He will give Sean a packet containing £1,000 and a key for a locker at the bus station, where there is another £11,000. He hints that that's a lot of money, and could get someone out of a lot of debt. All Sean has to do in return is play a game with them. He just wants to pay Sean money to play a game with him, that's all. The game is that from 9pm that night Sean runs off and hides around the city, and Alistair and Jamie 'seek' him. If he can hide until 9am the next morning, he can go to the bus station and get his money. If they iind him, all he has to do is give the money and the key back. That's all.

Photobucket

Sean is like 'what the hell?' and asks who they are. Alistair gives him his business card:

Photobucket

Photobucket

He says Sean can call him, but it has to be by 9pm that night. Then he and Jamie go.

Sean loses his job after the restaurant manager finds a cigarette case that mysteriously got from a customer's pocket into Sean's pocket while the man was in the toilet. So he goes to find his sister.

Photobucket

We find out that Sean and Alice's mother is dead, and their lives are sad. But Sean is determined that Alice isn't going to Amsterdam. He'll get the money.

But not by calling Alistair and Jamie. First he tries to prostitute himself. That's not a lie, they made it clear that his friend in the early part of the film, Sam, does it and he asked Sean why didn't he give it a try? And so he goes off to 'The Hill' tonight.

Photobucket

He gets into a car with a guy, but in the end he can't go through with it. So he calls Alistair.

Photobucket

Alistair thinks he sounds out of breath and wants to know if everything's alright. Sean says he wants to play that game, so when does it start. Alistair says now. Sean asks where the money and the key are, and Alistair says they're underneath the mat at Sean's sister's flat. Sean wants to know how he knows about his sister, but Alistair just hangs up.

Sean goes back to the flat and gets the money and the key, and either it's not 9 o'clock yet or they just don't think it's sporting to try to catch him then, because they don't go looking for him there. So Sean gets to running.

First of all, he has a pretty simple plan:

Photobucket

To get on a bus out of town. He waits for the bus to start taking passengers on.

Photobucket

Unexpected Amy Pond!

Amy Pond starts talking to him, and then asks him to watch her bag while she goes to the toilet. But then Sean has to run because what did she have?

Photobucket

Amy Pond was working for Alistair all along!

He tries going to the train station:

Photobucket

But there's been a report of a body on the line, and there are no trains tonight.

Sean starts walking back to his flat, or near it, because I guess he has nowhere else to go, but suddenly Alistair and Jamie pull up, and he has to run back to his block.

Photobucket

Photobucket

He's a little faster than Alistair though.

Photobucket

Photobucket

But Alistair is aware of how you can just wait and watch the numbers to see where people get off.

Photobucket

This is Alistair on the same floor that Sean's on pretending to be a policeman and asking if an old man has seen a young boy running around.

Photobucket

The old man gives Sean up almost immediately. Alistair checks out a utility room, and has to look by the light of his iPhone.

Photobucket

But Sean manages to escape him by jumping down a rubbish chute. Alistair calls Jamie and tells him Sean's in the basement, but Sean manages to get out and past them and run away. But while he's running he runs into a gang on the estate.

Photobucket

Who like to have conversations with him like this:

Photobucket

But he tells them he was just looking at a car on the estate, a Maserati, and that two wankers had gotten out of it, looking like they'd owned the place. The gang is all like 'a rich wanker's car? Lead on!'. Alistair and Jamie come out of the flats to find the gang sat on their car and hanging around, and Jamie isn't happy about that because it's his car. But the gang aren't happy about him talking to them, so the leader hits him and knocks him to the ground.

Photobucket

Alistair literally looks like he couldn't be more pleased with the situation.

Photobucket

The leader of the gang goes up and tries to have a go at Alistair, but it turns out Alistair doesn't mind because he knows about neck-punching:

Photobucket

And face stamping:

Photobucket

Photobucket

Sean starts to think that maybe he picked the wrong rich man to play a game with.

Sean runs away, and Alistair and Jamie drive around. Alistair wants to play a game with Jamie where they list things they hate. His list includes women on hen nights, single pregnant mothers, rapists, and "stinking rotten bankers". Given that he works for a company called Ethical Finances, I'm not exactly sure what that's supposed to say about his character. Except that maybe he just hates everyone.

Alistair and Jamie chase Sean to a tunnel down some steps, and Alistair tells Jamie to go down to the end and block off the exit while he chases Sean on foot.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Alistair wanders down the tunnel calling out "Sean. SEAN."

Photobucket

But then a homeless man's dog starts barking at him. So he shoots it. Then the homeless man grabs his leg. So, as Sean runs off, he shoots the homeless man as well.

Photobucket

Outside the tunnel he's lost Sean again.

Photobucket

But he doesn't seem that bothered because he has a thing.

Sean runs off, and Alistair calls him to ask how he's feeling, and tell him he's doing well, and also that they're coming down the street towards him. Alistair chases Sean up onto the roof of a building.

Photobucket
Photobucket

And catches up with him. But Sean has a plan.

Photobucket

A plan that involves jumping across an alleyway a few storeys high to the building next to them. Which he does.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

Photobucket

They have a conversation across the rooftops:

Sean: "I don't wanna play anymore!"
Alistair: "Too late, Sean. A deal's a deal."
"What's that mean? How's it too late? You can have your money back and the key, I don't want it."
"But what about Alice? She's a fuck-up Sean, a weight round your neck, a burden, right? She's not worth it."
"Fuck off!"
"Teach her a lesson."
"I said fuck off!"
"Oh FUCK her, Sean, FUCK your sister! Let her go to Amsterdam."
"What? How d'you know about that? How d'you know everything about me?"

How indeed, Sean?

Anyway, then Jamie turns up so Sean has to escape down the front of a building. But Jamie and Alistair chase him into a bar. As he's running through he drops the packet of money and a lady picks it up and calls him back. Then Alistair turns up and says actually, that belongs to him:

Photobucket
Photobucket

But she's pretty sure it's Sean's, and he takes it back.

Photobucket

Then she's all; "Wait a minute. I remember you. You're Alistair! Do you not remember me, we went to school together." And he's all:

Photobucket

"Get out of my way, you fucking. Idiot."

Sean gets away again and runs off to a club, gets a glam rock wig as a disguise and goes to hide out in the toilets for a minute. But not for long, because Alistair and Jamie turn up.

Photobucket

Alistair is cheating.

It gets pretty close, but Alistair and Jamie are distracted by a couple having sex in another cubicle:

Photobucket

So they decide he must be on another level of the club and leave. Sean gets the idea that they must have a tracking device on him, and checks the money, and the key, and finally finds it.

Photobucket

On his own leather jacket.

Alistair and Jamie follow their tracking device and a man wearing a leather jacket out of the club. Alistair tries his 'coming out of an alleyway' trick again.

Photobucket

Photobucket

But it's not Sean.

Photobucket

Jamie is impressed with Sean, he says "It's this kid, he's good!". Alistair is not impressed that Jamie is impressed. He tells him to go get the car.

Meanwhile Sean has found Sam again.

Photobucket

He explains a bit of what's happening to him, and shows him the money and the key, and explains that it's "like a game".

Photobucket

While Alistair does a bit more face-stamping.

Alistair and Jamie get back in the car, and Jamie asks Alistair about some pictures of a lady and a little girl he saw in Alistair's office when he went for his interview. He says no-one at the office said anything about them, and he wants to know if something happened to them. "Something bad".

Alistair says that yes, something bad happened. They were raped, and then had petrol thrown on them and were set alight, then they were left to die in an empty field.

Photobucket

Photobucket

This is him telling Jamie it was two boys, both under 16.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

Sneaky Alistair.

Meanwhile, Sean has gone back to Sam's flat for some rest and some beans on toast.

Photobucket
Photobucket

But shortly afterwards he thinks Sam is acting suspiciously.

Photobucket

It turns out that Sam was helping Alistair. Sean shouts at Sam and asks if he knows what's going to happen, and says that they're going to kill him if they catch him. Then he jumps out of a window.

Photobucket

Because Alistair is here.

Photobucket

Alistair demands to know where Sean is, but Sam says he's gone. So he gives Sam a beating. Then Jamie spots Sean on a ledge outside and runs up to tell Alistair. Alistair gets a plan, and then hops out of the window himself.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The plan involves Alistair going round one side of the ledge, while Jamie - without really agreeing to this plan beforehand - dangles Sam out of the window on the other side of him.

But Sean has another plan. Another jumping plan.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

He jumps down onto an ambulance that's just passing by, and then falls off the top of it and gets knocked out on the road. But it doesn't matter because the ambulance heard him hit them, so they've stopped to check it out. Alistair comes in off the ledge, and walks out of the room, ignoring Jamie and his shouts of what is he supposed to do with Sam, and that he needs some help. Jamie manages to get Sam in off the ledge, and they have a short conversation:

Photobucket
"I thought it was just a game"

Photobucket
'YEAH, I KNOW.'

Photobucket

Alistair watches the ambulance take Sean away as he loses him yet again. Jamie comes down and demands to know what happened up there, because he wasn't expecting anything like that. Alistair says he wants to make one thing clear, the way he works he always wins, if Jamie doesn't like that then maybe he doesn't want to work with Alistair. Jamie assures him that he does. Alistair then asks him what he'd do if the game became more serious, if they "upped the stakes".

Meanwhile, Sean is at the hospital, dreaming of Alistair and Jamie:

Photobucket

He wakes up, and the doctor tells him that he's not going anywhere. He says fine, and then the minute she's gone goes into her office to get his clothes back, and finds out from a photo on her desk that out of all the doctors in Edinburgh, he's got the one who happens to be Jamie's girlfriend. In between all of this, we see shots of Alistair and Jamie coming to the hospital and seeing Sean's name on the board.

I'm putting the ending in a separate post, because this is too big to post. The ending is the part I took the most screencaps of, but I'm going to try not to let that show up in my picspam. So go to my next post for the ending.

I can't read this because I always vaguely meant to watch this and didn't and you know I am rubbish at spoilers. If I get round to watching it I will come back.

DUDE, SO MANY PICTURES:)

I LOVE MOST THINGS THAT HAPPEN IN IT AND ALMOST EVERY EXPRESSION ON THEIR FACES. As it turns out.

It's probably for the best that you don't read it, because it spoils basically everything. It will be here waiting for you should you return :)
