You guessed it

I was completely struck down in the middle of (fairly dull) Medieval Studies lecture by this idea, which may turn into a plotbunny, and even perhaps a drabble for this weeks Contrelamontre challenge if I'm feeling adventurous, so I thought I'd share it: the 'Greek tragedy' of Sappho. I'm become fairly interested in her lately, since discovering some fascinating facts, and being the only one in my Literary Culture seminar who knew who she was (triumphant blush). She's an ancient Greek poet, perhaps the only (famous) female Greek poet, who Homer apparently considered 'the Tenth Muse'. She was also a lesbian - her all-female community on the isle of Lesbos is actually where the word comes from - and was meant to have died throwing herself off a cliff when her lover left her for a man. And was apparently turned into a bird, which is pretty, but neither here nor there.

So I'm thinking, in slashy terms of course. The way Green Wing is going I actually wouldn't be SUPRISED if Guy turned out to be gay, or even if he and Mac rode off into the big gay sunset together. I mean, I like Caroline, but not the over-shippines of the show, and Mac still seems to be being fairly cruel to her to me, and is perhaps just doing it to spite Guy, who completely ignored him at the party of much-kissing in favour of drunken women dancing really strangely.

Anyway...

Guy. Loves Elton John and Queen. Went to public school. Would tell Martin he'd passed his exams when he hadn't, but WOULDN'T go through with his plan to cut off all Mac`s hair (to Scissors Bentley`s suprise). Gay? My non-slasher housemate (who knows about my slash obssession, and seems to consider me an expert on all things homosexual now) seems to think so - she leaned over during the 'Queen' scene last Friday and asked if they were turning him into a repressed gay character. And if so, I'd say his interest lies mainly with Mac, who's moving further and further towards Caroline with every breath. And they're saying that the season's ending with be a LITERAL cliffhanger...

Am I crazy? Perhaps. But then the show's crazy, so suddenly this doesn't seem so implausible, though perhaps a little dark.

That said, while I think it would make a cool, angsty fic (with Mac coming to the rescue at the last minute, of course), I do hope that if it is indeed Guy that ends of playing centre role in the 'Greek tragedy' that the writers don't push him too close to the edge. Because I can't see him coming back from that completely the same. And I like him how he is. I'm half-tempted to spoil myself and try to find out what happens, but no. I'll be strong. And analyse each and every thing he does and word he says in tomorrow`s episode, looking for signs of despair, and if I find them run screaming to the nearest spoiler dispenser.

And this 'short, off-the-cuff' post has suddenly become the longest of the day. Sigh.
