I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT ALISTAIR IS TWENTY. And the Warden is probably meant to be a teenager. It even makes sense with the Dalish Origin, the only one I've really played, because she is dicking about with her friend, all "remember that secret brawling we did, thanks for not telling on me, LET'S EXPLORE A DANGEROUS ANCIENT RUIN ON OUR OWN!!!". Like, I knew that a lot of the other Origins were about the characters 'coming of age', and some of them were genuinely supposed to be like teenagers. Just...ugh.

I don't hate it. It wasn't a hate 'ugh'. But I have to view the story through an entirely different lens...like I thought the Warden and companions were just young, capable adults, who yeah were a bit young, but still knew what they were doing. Instead they are basically just upstarts, barely having achieved adulthood themselves, and yet running around ruining the world in an attempt to save it. No wonder Loghain had no respect. It even makes sense of all the older companions' reactions, like Wynne, being all 'I must go with this woman, I must help her, SHE REALLY NEEDS THE HELP'. And Sten...Leliana was probably the oldest of the group when the companions and their dog come sidling up to his cage like troubled youths, poking at the dangerous dude on display for some reason. All like 'guess what, we're Grey Wardens, want to get out of the cage and help??'. HE MUST HAVE BEEN CHOMPING AT THE BIT TO GET OUT OF THAT CAGE AND HELP.

And my character - I don't know, I kind of envisaged her just older, with a bit more experience under her belt and a bit more awareness of who she was. But I don't think that works with the story anymore. I may have to replay the whole game, and I have already replayed the game a number of times, to the point where it's almost boring now. But. SHE'S A CHILD.

The game writers wanted Nathan Fillion to voice Alistair, Mal Reynolds-style. Nathan Fillion. For a 20 year-old. And they got Claudia Black to voice another 'girl'. I mean the voice actors were brilliant, and I wouldn't change those performances for the world, and maybe it takes a certain level of maturity to be that good, but ????? They sound in their thirties. But they are children.

Okay. Cognitive dissonance receding. I am probably going to play the game all over again. Huh. At least in Fallout 3, they tell you your character is 19 before you start. And in the Elder Scrolls, the choice is yours!
