Coronation Street argh, Emmerdale and some slighty confused thoughts about Carl King, and Folklore
I hate John Stape. I hate him. I hate him. But besides hating him, or perhaps more than that, I can't believe how people think it's unreasonable of Rosie to keep bringing up the fact that he kidnapped her that one time. I mean okay, so he gave her some money and she seemed to not care after that. But still. Even if she likes money and she took the money and she was happy having the money - quite apart from that giving a very strange view of how people react to being kidnapped, Coronation Street writers - that doesn't necessarily mean her feelings are going to just go away, or she couldn't have been wrong about the money making up for what he did to her. Especially, as she mentioned, the really creepy and weird way he did it. God. But people don't even seem to be saying "Well, it's understandable, but she did say she was okay with it before.". It's just "the little cow". I can't believe it.
And Carla. Oh my God Carla. Although in some ways it's nice, because there are plenty of female characters who are 'bad' on soaps and that I hate, and sometimes if I wonder if I'm just being weak and not liking it when people do bad things ever or conflict happens. So it's sort of nice that Carla is acting really weird but I know that I still like her. But seriously. I know she was trying to butter Frank up, but "hysterical little girl"? Also, I know it's in her best interests to believe Frank isn't a rapist for her business, and it's been suggested in soap mags and interviews with Alison King that maybe Carla feels guilty for telling Maria to go round all dressed up and to flirt - but it just seems weird for her to assume that Maria genuinely didn't know what was happening in the situation with Frank, when she's proved plenty of times in the past that is often actually pretty good at reading people, like noticing that there was something going on between Liam and Carla, and figuring out Tony was a murderer long before anyone else did. I mean, she changed her mind about Tony, and then ended up engaged to him, which sort of undermines that particular bit of brilliance. But he did genuinely seem to want to take care of Maria and Liam, and genuinely love her, so it's not like she was seeing things that weren't there then either. I just. I don't know. It's like Carla refuses to see how great Maria is, or how really quite intelligent she is when it comes to certain subjects. To the point of believing that rapists wouldn't lie, or something, over Maria's word. I just. Whatever, Carla.
In other news, Gail was upset because she told Nick to forget she was his mother and call her 'Gail', and he still didn't think she was sexy. Tough luck, Gail.
Ah. Anyway. I also ended up watching Emmerdale tonight. First off, I hate Cain. And I know he was sort of there for Debbie a lot more than Charity was, and Charity abandoned her and everything, but I still can't quite believe that Charity's basically going to have to put up with being stalked for Debbie's sake. Although, they seem to be making the point that Jai is weird and possessive as well, so maybe she's better off without both of them. I didn't watch last night's, so I have no idea if there was a robbery or not, but either way they both seem to be being pricks. Debbie is Charity's daughter, Jai. You don't get to tell her how to treat her daughter, or whether or not to drive a massive wedge in her relationship with her, for your sake. Good lord.
Also, I wanted to say that I love how much Carl is on Nicola's side with the whole Jimmy thing. I know he's still being kind of a prat about it, but I love that he's on her side and kind of was from the very beginning, when Jimmy first went missing. And I wanted to say something that I am sort of a bit confused about, about him. Or I don't know the words about it, quite? I wanted to say that - maybe it's just me - but that I once again found it weird that he always seems to have sexual tension with women he fights with. I felt it tonight with Kelly a bit, and I've seen it before with other women, such as Debbie, which is kind of a shame because I used to ship Carl and Debbie a little bit, and sadly one of the few times he had a proper conversation with her and one of the times I really felt there was some sexual tension between them was a time when he was being kind of a massive dick and trying to menace her. I mean, she held her own, she wasn't terrified of him, but still. And the thing I wanted to say, and the reason that I think that is, is that I think that he as a character - and maybe the actor as well, I don't know - genuinely relates better to women than he does to men, maybe. I mean, he's still a dick, don't get me wrong. But he always seemed to understand women better than his brothers generally did, definitely better than Jimmy does, and have quite an easy way of talking to them. That's kind of how his thing with Eve started, long before it started looking like they'd have an affair. He talked to her quite easily, and was quite a natural flirt, and found it easy to have a bit of back and forth with her. Which eventually led to them getting romantically interested in each other. Which is something I didn't like, and I don't think it justified it, but still. You could see pretty easily how it happened.
And that's I think what it is when he's fighting with women, sometimes. Even though it is awful, and he has the physical and social sort of advantage, in a sexist privileged sort of way and he often clearly knows it, most of the women he fights with have done something 'wrong' or that he sees as wrong - hiding money their father extorted out of him, lying and planning a fake wedding to steal his money, or manipulating his amnesiac brother, or something. And it's not necessarily the show saying they are wrong, and he is right to be upset, it's just sort of in character terms how he feels about it. But he also seems to kind of understand what they're doing and why they're doing it, sort of, and he can really meet them on that level, I think. And that's possibly why I find it sort of sexually charged, because that kind of meeting of minds during a conflict type of thing appeals to me, in quite a lot of pairings. And why I probably wouldn't feel the same way, or don't feel the same way, about things like Jimmy and Nicola arguing, or Cain shouting at Charity. Because I don't get that same vibe off them. And it's also why I really quite like him being on Nicola's side, because again, he's not like her best mate or going on shopping trips with her all the time, but you kind of get the feeling that he's genuinely on her side because he feels for her, and genuinely because even though she and him fight, he knows she's better for Jimmy than Kelly and that she and Jimmy ought to be together. Also because he hates Kelly as well though, clearly. I don't know. It's just something I like about him, even though it's often a conflicted sort of liking nowadays. I don't think it's makes him any less sexist, or any less of a jerk in terms of some of the things he's done. I just genuinely think it's true and it's interesting to watch. I don't know. I guess I kind of feel like I want to justify why I still like him even though he is quite a lot of a prick. Especially since he killed his dad. But then like I say, I haven't been watching it a lot lately. If he's done anything truly horrendous, I am both willing to hear about it and sadly also quite capable of imagining it.
Although it's probably a bit pointless altogether, since there aren't that many people on my flist who even watch Emmerdale that often, and they've probably seemed more of it than I have recently. Oh well. I just do think it's interesting, that feeling of him relating to women maybe better than men, and how that plays into his tendency to sleep around, and how it doesn't necessarily mean he's any less sexist, yet in certain situations (like Nicola's), it sort of does make him quite good with women. I don't know. I suppose if it was a question I was asking, it would be, did Carl's conversation with Kelly tonight seemed as weirdly charged to you as it did to me? And is the way he's acting around Nicola at the moment as sort of touching as I'm finding it? Note: I still don't think that makes him any better of a person. But. Still.
Anyway. Aside from that, Nathan got a mention! Yay! I wish he would come back. I'd like to see him again, obviously, and also if Declan really is just going to be a prick, it'd be nice for him to have someone who is similarly amoral to be pitted against. Rather than like, local tenants. And maybe if Nathan was around to be a bit awful, it would remind Declan that people with money can sometimes be a bit awful, and to watch his behaviour a little more closely and not be such a jerk. And then maybe a bit of taking him under his wing. And then maybe sex. Hurrah.
In other news, bah. I have been playing a lot of Folklore recently, and I thought I was nearly finished. There are five realms you can visit, and I had completed four of them. However, there are also two characters you can play, a young girl called Ellen, or an adult man called Keats. When I first started I genuinely did alternate, playing a chapter with Ellen, then the same chapter from Keats' point of view. But then I decided that I didn't like Keats much, and it was kind of annoying, just finishing one chapter, and then basically having to do it all over again with Keats. You learned more information from playing both characters, but still. And the game guides seemed to say you could play as Ellen or Keats or both, so it seemed like you didn't have to do both. So after the first chapter, I decided to just play as Ellen. But now, like I say, I've just completed the fourth realm, out of five, and now it says to complete the fourth realm properly, you have to play it as Keats as well. So I have to go back and play through three realms and do the chapter I've just done again, just to move forward with the story and with Ellen. Pah I say. Pah and bah.
And Carla. Oh my God Carla. Although in some ways it's nice, because there are plenty of female characters who are 'bad' on soaps and that I hate, and sometimes if I wonder if I'm just being weak and not liking it when people do bad things ever or conflict happens.
