Lost 1.19, "Deux Ex Machina"

Alright, I have some sympathy for Locke. He'd already won my love slightly with the cradle. And I'm getting that he's slightly screwy in the head (and that whole 'immaculate conception' thing probably didn't help). But, as I'm sure was meant to be obvious, he's done the exact same thing to Boone that his father did to him - and if you assume, as I do, that it's mostly about his legs, then for pretty much the same reason. Which is rubbish. And, y'know, I think it is mostly about his legs; dictating the fate of everyone, all the survivors, because of that, his legs. And he doesn't know what's causing it! The Devil might see giving someone back the use of their legs a good way to get them onside, and he never even considers that it might be due to a Bad Thing. He just wants A Destiny! And it annoys me.

Jack. Why am I supposed to like or support Jack? He just - he's the 'compassionate, caring, good Doctor' and the 'tattoo-riden hard man who takes no shit', whenever he feels like it, and it just doesn't work. I feel like he's holding them all to ransom with his medical knowledge. A big thing I like about Sawyer? Consistency. Even when it's very annoying.

Okay. He showed some concern for Sawyer. Once. But most of the time not. And in fact says at the end that he didn't even treat him for his sake. Wtf? A doctor who doesn't care about his patients? Or at least patients he can't tell what to do? Alright, Sawyer's not the nicest person to interact with. If you're a prat with him. But he clearly has trust/boundary issues - don't have to be a psychologist to see that. He was having killer headaches, worrying that he might have a brain tumour - mentioned a possibly close personal death along the way (but it doesn't matter like Jack's father!) - and Jack just walks off at the first hint of sarcasm. He uses his position of authority to get personal, embarassing information out of him, while he's already vulnerable (and no, Kate, he didn't deserve it), and then expects a thank you at the end! When Sawyer did not, in fact, ask for help in the first place! Or expect it probably! And it is just GRHGRGHHRHGRGGHR I HATE HIM!

I could possibly accept that it is jealousy over Kate that has him acting like this. But it is never specifically said, and he's never meta-ishly called on it the way Sawyer would be. Another thing I like about Sawyer? He's a bastard, but he and the show never pretend he isn't. Rah.

I'm not, frankly, impressed with the whole thing of 'making a difficult character vulnerable by making him a figure of fun', anyway. There are other ways to do it. Kate never gets the same treatment. Sayid doesn't. Jack doesn't. It just - seems like a cheap out. And it annoys me. Hmph.

Sawyer in his glasses is love though. And I did squee a bit over his attempts to soothe his headaches. And it is lovely that Sayid made them for him HE LOVES HIM!!. I had assumed Sawyer had his own glasses, before the crash, and they were broken, and he was not making a big thing out of it because 'Vulnerability! No!', and then Sayid found out and fixed them anyway. It was lovely enough as it was though :)

Icon of episode, yay!
