In which our heroine joins the world of WORK! And makes a slight mockery of it
Hello. I'm back in Yorkshire, probably for keeps. Shocked? Yes, well so was I when, casually slobbing it in Nottingham yesterday morning, looking forward to another day of sea, sun and Sawyer, my dad called to ask me if I wanted a job filing at his engineering company in Leeds. And given that I've been complaining about money, ooh, forever, the answer was yes. Which made my housemates cry slightly, since we had about 3 hours to celebrate the end of all our exams. But 40 hours a week at £6 an hour beckoned, and I could not deny that call. So I'm a working girl now. My feet hurt.
Enough cool 'yeah, I earn money' talk. I photocopied for two hours! I pissed off all the proper engineers by holding up their copying of single A3 sheet with my 7-copies-of-30-pages ways! I'm a total whizz at reloading the paper tray and emptying misfed paper now. FEAR my secretarying skillz! Also I learned how to bind documents, and only destroyed them a little. A boy helped when I just wanted to BIND things, and not put classy cover- and end-sheets on them. This was probably for the good of the company. And then after lunch I learned I don't actually filing hundreds of mixed up e-mails in order of contract, date and time. I'm not sure how to feel about that one. And giggled at all the emails my dad had sent, even when they were about girders and foundations. Also, the Big Boss (who is short) popped out of a meeting and asked me to photocopy a document for him quickly, and I was all 'yes sir' and nipped straight up the stairs. And a blonde girl invited me down into the locked basement to "search for files". Yeah. Any excuse you like, blonde girl.
Mostly I'm thinking I can totally earn money like this for four weeks.
On the downside, I had to wear work trousers that I bought a year ago and just a bit too tight. And get up at 6:30 after a night of packing, unpacking and washing my hair. Which was - punishing. And my work shoes are murderous, YET I STILL WALKED ALL THE WAY INTO LEEDS, AND AROUND LEEDS, FOR MY ENTIRE LUNCH HOUR, WHY, WHY, WHY?? But the office ladies also gave me swiss chocolate, and I got to use my chemistry skills, wondering why benzene was in their soil (note: you do NOT want benzene in your soil). Also there was asbestos in a hotel. It was a bit like being Erin Brokovich, except without any actual Erin Brokovich-like behaviour. Also, they were all really nice to me because my dad works there, and they probably know he'll get them if they're mean to me. "Engineer their downfall", if you will.
In conclusion: my job is the win, but I may be slightly delirious from Swiss chocolate and no sleep.
Mostly I'm pleased because if I keep it up I can totally buy all those DVDs I've been coveting, and pay off my Connotations deposit. And apparently they won't mind me taking days off to get my results and go a-fanning in London - though I might need to rearrange meeting places and times, if I change my ticket. And, yes, I'll have temping experience and something to put on my CV. But mostly MONEY! And the wearing of 'professional' shirts.
So...that was my day. Also, I'm going to see kittens later. And I watched the 'Mickey is LOVE!' episode of Dr Who, and can reward myself with a
nostalgia_lj screencap re-cap. But how are you guys? 24-hour internet and MSN Messenger, baby!
