I think because Nathan's leaving, the writers have Emmerdale have decided to make a few characters just a little bit more crazy, just to make things even. Namely Jai, and his insensitive jokes and Pollard-threatening ways, and Cain, for whom the financial independence of his girlfriend is like a red rag to a bull, apparently. I can't think of another way to explain some of that.
Anyway. The episode. We opened with Nathan, bruised about the face in a bathrobe staggering into the kitchen, obviously in pain from his ribs, and looking around at a completely empty kitchen. OH GOD NATHAN. Although I was kind of glad (ish) to see those ribs actually hurting him, because towards the end of last night's episode, after three days of being kidnapped and then being beaten with a wooden beam, he looked suprisingly okay. Maybe he really does have superpowers. Or, maybe he has Bad Guy Resilience, which might send out the unfortunate message that you can do what you want to 'bad people', it doesn't matter. But anyway, not so much, he was clearly really feeling it in today's episode.
Declan and Faye were standing around in Faye's kitchen, with Declan saying he couldn't believe he'd cared for Natasha so much he convinced himself that Nathan was the killer, when in reality all he was trying to do was protect his mum, and he felt really bad about it. And Faye agreed. Which was a rather pleasingly positive set of remarks, from the both of them. Then Declan asked how Maisie and Will were doing, Faye said not well, Declan said that was probably to be expected. Then Maisie came down the stairs, they asked her how she was and she said fine, and then said something and that it was just her and Will now. And oh God, oh Nathan.
Charity claimed Cain was an idiot and that he clearly thought that the situation they were in was some kind of win, and that he'd just enjoyed showing Nathan what a "big man" he was. Cain agreed. Indeed.
Nathan staggered into town, still clearly suffering with his ribs, to the general judgment/semi-sympathy of the townsfolk. Cain decided he hadn't finished with him, because apparently it is his place somehow, and wandered up to ask how he was, how were his ribs, something about his mum. Nathan asked him to just leave it for today, and then pointed out that he could have Cain arrested, if he wanted, for what he'd done to him. Cain said that he thought Nathan only hadn't done that because there was more to this situation than even Natasha had said, and he didn't want the police to find out. But it wasn't over, not yet. Get lost Cain.
Maisie tried to be nice to Will and get him to eat something. He asked if they were supposed to hate mum now, and if she'd really fallen in love with her brother, and when they were going home to see Nathan. Maisie couldn't really answer any of those questions.
Nathan went to Faye's house to see Maisie. Maisie opened the door but didn't want to talk to him, he asked her to please see him, and said that he knew Faye was out because he'd been watching and he'd seen her go. Oh my God, Nathan. Maisie pointed out that he was still sneaking around, even now, and tried to close the door, and he said he'd seen mum. That seemed to swing Maisie and she let him in. He came in, and really gingerly, with a lot of gasping, settled himself down onto a chair/bench thing in Faye's hall. Maisie looked a tiny bit sympathetic/guilty and asked if he'd seen a doctor yet. He said it was just bruises. It seems like it might not be, but whatever. Then they kind of had a talk, he asked her what happened now, she said nothing because their mum had confessed and was in jail, he said he meant for them. She said nothing, because he'd been lying to them, and she still didn't believe he hadn't had more to do with covering up the murder, and framing Ryan at least. He said he'd told her, but not what he told her. Then he said she should visit their mum, if she could bear to see where she'd put her.
Maisie did indeed go to see her mum in jail, and demanded to know why and how she'd been able to cover it up for so long, and exactly how much Nathan had been involved in the cover-up and framing of Ryan. Natasha still said that she'd forced Nathan to keep quiet, and lied that the framing thing was all her doing, which was quite nice of her. She also asked "haven't you punished Nathan enough?", which is the same question she asked when Maisie insisted on believing that Ryan was innocent and Natasha and Nathan were covering up the murder and framing him, because she had quite a lot of evidence for thinking that. And I am kind of sick of her trying to emotionally manipulate them that way. But Maisie again looked kind of guilty, and said she was sorry about what she'd done to Nathan, but it seemed like the only way to find out the truth and get Ryan out of prison. The thing is, I know Maisie wasn't actively doing anything half as bad as Nathan, but framing someone because it seems like the only way to keep someone Nathan thought was innocent out of prison, and torturing someone to try to get someone Maisie thought was innocent out of prison - are not massively different things. I'm just saying, I know Maisie is emotionally fragile, probably now more than ever, but 'it was the only way I could think of to get something done' is the kind of justification Nathan would probably use, and Maisie looked like she felt pretty justified. Ryan was innocent obviously, but I don't think that's much the moral high ground she seemed to think it was.
Anyway. Natasha continued to try to control her family even after confessing to her husband's murder and from inside prison. She asked where Will was, how was he, could Maisie bring him to see her at some point maybe? And she asked whether Maisie and Will were moving back home with Nathan, insisting that they needed to stick together, that what's left of their family should stick together, now. And maybe she's just trying to look after her family, but oh my God. Stop it, Natasha. Also, I realised while thinking back over it, we don't know what Natasha said to Nathan when he came to see her - although he said she was being charged, I don't know if they actually spoke. But chances are, if they did speak she was giving him sort of orders even then, telling him he had to look after Will and Maisie. I think he might even have said before something about them needing to "stick together", like Natasha said to Maisie. Possibly even telling him to lie, to let her take all the blame, so Maisie and Will would be more likely to forgive him and they could all stay together. It's conjecture of course, but it's seems pretty likely considering Nathan's behaviour and Natasha's.
Anyway. Declan was at the bar, and he was talking with Diane about how Diane couldn't believe she'd been friends with a murderer. Declan agreed, and - I can't remember now, but either that Natasha wasn't like or didn't care about anyone but her "precious son, Nathan", and that they were "two of a kind". Which is not quite what he was saying earlier, and seemed like a weird change of attitude. Maybe he got frustrated again with not being able to understand Nathan, and decided to just hate him again instead. Who knows. Cain tried to ruin Charity's new deal thing she had going with Jai, apparently because he didn't like her thinking she was worth something by doing a professional job, he didn't like the idea of her being financially independent, and he didn't like the idea of her working with Jai, even though, as she pointed out, he hadn't minded working with him himself when he wanted to screw over Charity. She told him that if he tried to screw up her business deals again, she'd go to the police and tell them what he did to Nathan and have him arrested. Hah.
Finally, Maisie went to Home Farm, let herself in, and called out for Nathan (I think). He eventually came hobbling down the stairs, really horribly eagerly, and was all "Oh Maisie, you're home". And looked behind her, again kind of eagerly, and asked "Where's Will?". Maisie told him Will was with Declan, and that she wasn't necessarily coming home. She told him she'd seen Natasha, and that Natasha had said he had nothing to do with framing Ryan. He said again that he hadn't, but kind of looked down at the floor. She said she was sorry for accusing him of killing their dad (I think then), but that he'd lied, and she couldn't just forgive him for all the lies. He told her he'd only done it to protect their mum. She said she still couldn't forgive him for it. He told her he loved her, and she said she loved him, but that there was a part of her that hated him, and she wasn't sure she'd ever get over that. She said that if she ever found out he'd been involved in framing Ryan - He insisted that he hadn't, possibly. Then he asked her if she was coming home. She said they'd have to take it one day at a time - but yes, she would. Just so Will could see they were together, if nothing else.
And oh God, Nathan's still lying, I'd heard that Maisie and Will moved back in with him, and I worried that it would be partly because he'd not told them everything, though I assumed it would be about the blackmail. But in any case, he's still lying, and I understand why kind of, he wants to protect himself and he wants to keep hold of what little family he's got left, but oh God, it's clearly just going to go wrong. Especially with Cain, and probably Ryan (especially from what I hear) still out to get him. And he won't really have anyone to blame but himself - although it does seem like Maisie wouldn't forgive him for it even if he told the truth now. But oh God.
Although frankly, I'm not sure Maisie has a leg to stand on in terms of keeping Will with her. Natasha made Nathan the executor of her estate and Will's legal guardian when she was going to confess a few months ago, and I'm not sure she ever changed it. And given that Nathan has not been charged with anything over the murder, and Maisie just a few months ago had a nervous breakdown, he'd probably be the more suitable candidate in a fight for custody. Not that, I'm sure, Nathan would want it to go that far, but if she really insisted on not letting him see Will, he might. And I don't think it's a fight she'd win. Oh God.
Also, I think Nathan is now technically Declan's business partner in Home Farm Estate. Although there's a chance that won't work out favourably for anyone, again. But at the moment, it's quite happy :D
