YOUR WORDS ARE SO GOOD. I loved Soames Forsyte. I don't agree with the rape, of course. But everyone was just like 'He's awful', and expected him to be awful, but all I seemed to see was him taking care of things when people needed him to, like organising funerals and stuff, and saying things like "I was very sorry to hear about your father". And yes, he was a bit controlling, and not exactly smooth, but it seemed to me like he was mostly just caught up in the idea of "proprietry", and as much tied up by it himself as anything. Irene just annoyed me by being so self-righteous when she had, essentially, married him for his money. He was prepared to leave her alone, he listened to her after she jerked him around, he agreed to all her terms, and didn't even say anything when she wouldn't let him kiss her. Apparently Gina McKee thinks she tried to make her marriage work, at first. I think maybe not. It's a shame really because, when they got over themselves a bit, I think they suited each other a bit. I shipped him slightly with Bosinney though. All that arguing about how to do up the house!
The second series. Basically, it was twenty years later when their kids are all grown up. Before that there's quite a lot about how Soames basically gave his daughter everything she asked for, and even wore white and a straw hat when she wanted him to. Anyway, la di da, the kids naturally fall in love. Lots of people are upset about this. There's a GREAT bit where Young Jolyon storms into Soames' office and is all 'They're in love. You knew about this didn't you? WE MUST STOP THEM', and Soames is all 'HAVE YOU ASKED them?'. Then he says something along the lines of 'Obviously I will intefere, because I'm a bastard, but you, should think long and hard about what a hypocrite you are'. Basically all the secrets about Soames and Irene and the rape come out, and the boy breaks up with Fleur, and she shouts at her dad that he only ever bought her Stuff, as if that was what she cared about, and agrees to marry some rich stiff who likes her. She's awful to Soames for ages, until on the morning of the wedding he gets shouty himself, and grabs her, and is all 'Do you want to know what I did??'. And then he tells her about how he loved Irene, but it all went wrong, and she "locked him out of her mind, and out of her body". And then he tells her how one night when he was drunk and hopeless he forced her, and he cries as he says it, and says he knew that afterwards all she could see when she looked at him was that night. And Fleur is just amazed and incredulous, and forgives him, and it's lovely. Then they walk down the stairs towards the wedding, and he stops her and says 'right, are you sure you want to do this?', and I was all 'NO, RUN AWAY AND TRAVEL THE WORLD WITH YOUR BRILLIANT FATHER', but she does, so they can have an angsty next book.
And then there's a bit at the end - Young Jolyon has died, and the kids are married, and Soames goes round to Irene's with a painting she liked, or a painting he thought she'd want, or something Jolyon painted. And she's just like 'Yes?...Thank you', and he just looks at her, and then leaves. And a servant asks her what he wanted, and Irene says 'He didn't want anything. Nothing at all'. And it's just beautiful. Oh. I love him. Her a bit. Not Jolyon or June.
I haven't read I, Lucifer, no. It's on the to-read list? I'm willing to bet it doesn't have Mazikeen, though.
He would be a cat I sent out to earn rent. Therefore he would be a rentcat.
