5 questions from whatho )

That was quite fun. If any of you want any questions of your own, feel free to ask, although I can't promise they'll be terribly interesting or incisive. But incisive might not be what you're looking for anyway. So ask away.

Because I am bored and haven't done one in a while, a meme. Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj.

Name me a character! I will tell you:

* How I FEEEEEL about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Although I have to point out that I'm not always in fandoms very much, and a lot of the shows I love don't always have much of a fandom, so I reserve the right to not really know which opinions about a character are unpopular. But I can probably give you AN opinion.

Happy Easter, also.

Meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] whatho. Once you have been tagged, you have to write an entry with 10 random things, facts, goals, or habits about yourself. At the end, choose 10 people to be tagged. You can't tag a person who has tagged you. Except I also won't be tagging anyone.

10 Random Things About Me )

I have an InsaneJournal now, in case of impending Livejournal disasters. I'm under the same name, if anyone wants to friend me, and I’ll be cross-posting, probably more often when I get the html figured out. I came to realise how vaguely pointless it was to have a back-up GreatestJournal and never update it. Or actually sign in to it. Oh well. I'd like to second [livejournal.com profile] whatho's question, though, what is all this about Inksome? Is it better than other journal sites?

As an aside, I was listening to Adam and Joe from Saturday on Listen Again at the site. Is it just me or has Joe been getting progressively more in love with Adam since the summer? Possibly earlier, as I only started listening to it then. I think it KILLED HIM A BIT that Adam was attracted to a man and it wasn't him. Dude.

Friday nights are tricky. They're a combination of freedom from work and having to get up, and having to try to schedule around various soaps and late-night comedy. But anyway.

Wittering about Cape Fear )

A few weeks ago there was Post About Your Favourite Female Characters Day, and I did not post anything for it or indeed join in with anyone else posting about it. Today I tried to make a list of my favourite female characters, based on characters I love and characters I wouldn't mind or would want to read fic about on their own. I'm not sure entirely what I came up with, but here it is, along with any others I remember while I'm typing:

  1. Debbie Dingle (Emmerdale)

  2. Stacey Slater (Eastenders)

  3. Perdy Hyde-Sinclair (Emmerdale)

  4. Wednesday Addams (The Addams Family, films)

  5. Violet Baudelaire (A Series of Unfortunate Events, book series)

  6. Raksha Keller (Witchlight, Night World book series)

  7. Mazikeen (Lucifer, comic book series)

  8. Lucille Bluth (Arrested Development)

  9. Lindsey Bluth (Arrested Development)

  10. Maeby Bluth (Arrested Development)

  11. Ann Veal (Arrested Development)

  12. Rita-Sue Dreyfuss (Carnivale)

  13. Selena (28 Days Later - it was going to be another character she played, Tia Dalma, but we all know how that turned out in film 3)

  14. Juliet Darling (Dirty Sexy Money)

  15. Letitia Darling (Dirty Sexy Money)

  16. Selena Coombs (American Gothic)

  17. Heaven's Fall Sword (Seven Swords)

  18. Fang (Seven Swords)

  19. Valerie Lambert (Emmerdale)

  20. Tara Maclay (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

  21. Bad Wolf (Doctor Who)

  22. The Wire (Doctor Who)

  23. Trixie (Deadwood)

  24. Niki Sanders (Heroes)

  25. Drey (Half Nelson)

  26. Eleanor (The Fire Sword)

I know that I have more than this. I have a big list in my old notebook, but I'm not looking at it yet. I know for a fact I have more fandoms than these. My mind has just gone a bit blank. There are also girls I love who clearly need another woman looking after them, and female characters I thought were great but just don't personally love, and various others, but this is my list. In which I go into detail )

There's also a meme, which I'm stealing from [livejournal.com profile] jekesta:

You're in a shopping centre and zombies attack. You can choose a weapon (with unlimited ammo), a song to have blasting over the loud speakers, and a famous person (real or fictional) to FIGHT ALONG SIDE YOU.

1. I would have to go for a shotgun. It's a classic, it blows things up, and movies and TV have taught me that anyone can use one. Also it's a bit super-cool. If you got skills to go with your ammo, the Heaven's Fall Sword might be a second choice. Probably not great for keeping the zombies at a distance, but pretty win, I think you'll find, my friends. It would totally be the number one way I'd want to keep zombies off my back. Aside from the shotgun.

2. Music is hard. It would have to be something that motivated you and got you fired up, but also kept your mind on the situation at hand. Possibly Souljacker Part 1 by The Eels. Or Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis. Or Where Eagles Dare by The Misfits. Any of these. Maybe they could be played on a loop. I don't know. Just pick whichever one you like best. Music is hard.

3. I'm going to have to go with Sherlock Holmes. He could figure out ingenious ways for us to defeat the zombies and get out of seemingly impossible situations. And having to keep him topped up with morphine and rescue his violin would add drama. Also, you want to see him with a shotgun. You know you do.

And that is my very brilliant and not at all unfeasible plan to escape from a shopping centre zombie attack!

This is an entry I've been wanting to do for a while. A while back, [livejournal.com profile] jekesta (at least) did a "Top 5 Favourite Vids" meme. This would be quite impossible to choose, though it would involve the Rama Lama Bang Bang vid and at least one of the Sea of Souls vids Jekesta made. So I'm going to do something a bit more manageable - My top 5 favourite "Holding Out For A Hero" vids!

My Top 5 "Holding Out For a Hero" Vids

  1. Star Trek Voyager. I won't say it was the first. The first was the one in my head of Sawyer from Lost, with shots of him running and swimming and making masts and OH THE IRONY. But this was the first one that showed me what was actually out there on the net, if I bothered to look. I love it so much. I never really even watched that much Voyager. I mostly didn't know who Seven of Nine was. But I love Janeway. I love Seven of Nine. I love them together. They are great. Oh. Spoilers for the vid )

  2. Alien Resurrection. I judge it slightly for not being to the Bonnie Tyler version. But other than that it is great. Ripley is so the person you'd want popping up if you needed a hero. I love this vid quite a lot.

  3. All action heroes pretty much ever. I love this vid for taking the lyrics QUITE LITERALLY. And deciding that masses of violence is what this songvid probably needs. Spoilers for vid )

  4. The rest are tricky. The problem with seeing some great Holding Out For A Hero vids is that you become critical of the rest. I judge vids that show clips of the "hero" before the first 'I need a hero!'. I judge vids that do not have another/the other characters looking sort of sad and forlorn until that point in the vid. I sort of judge vids that do not use the Bonnie Tyler version of the song. I judge vids that do not have actual reaching at the 'Some were reaching back for me' part. A lot of vids just seem sort of rub compared to 1, 2 and 3. But I recently found a Life on Mars one. Which is great. Much like Gene. Slight spoilers for the vid ).

  5. And the last place is a bit of a tie. At the moment I love the Brothers Grimm and love that this vid exists, but it does seem to be a lot of long clips from the movie, which don't always fit with the lyrics. So hmm. But yay. And then there's the Stargate Atlantis one, which takes ages to load. Mostly I love it because it has a lot of running and jumping in it, I think. Also I like the way Rodney looks at the gun in one clip, although I don't know why. It makes me slightly sad I never watched the show, although it's quite possible that's just the effect of the vid/song. Oh I love Holding Out For A Hero. It's great.

That is my list. Rah. Mostly I think every fandom should have a Holding Out For A Hero vid. I think it would improve things by quite a lot.

First drabble. Because I've been promising Cecilia I'd her some for ages. And I'll only tell her about it otherwise.

And now to London!
girlofprey: (Default)
I got a bill from my internet provider people today, for £173! Bearing in mind that I got a bill last month for the line installation fee, which was £116. And, y'know, I might even half wonder if it was my fault, if I was on Broadband too often and downloading too much, if I wasn't being charged £139 for the period '21/05/2007 to 21/05/2007'. With line rental of £8.47 for next month. I would have already called up to sort it out except, like every other fucking human being on the planet as far as I can tell, their helpline people only work from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Which means I'm going to have to do it at work tomorrow, either at lunchtime when it'll probably be really busy, or when I'm supposed to be working. Growl.

I'm not entirely impressed.

I was thinking of going to see a film tonight, but the one I want to see isn't on till 9.30. And I should probably be saving myself for Pirates on Friday anyway. I went to see Magicians on Saturday though - personally, I enjoyed it. Keep your eyes peeled, and you might even see a clip of Rachael's Town(tm) (current town). That's right folks, it wasn't Jersey.

There are still six drabbles up for grabs, if anyone wants them. Otherwise I'm gonna have to start doubling up. And also:

Make up a title for a story I didn't write, and I will respond with details of those non-written stories. You may, if you like, include details, such as pairings or fandom or whatnot.

Stealed from [livejournal.com profile] rei_c. Because I've been feeling my distinct lack of fic lately. And I'm in the mood for a meme.

The plan was to sort out all of the books today, get rid of some and sort the rest into neat, tidy sections; and then this evening, buouyed by a sense of my own usefulness, to answer my 5 lists' with wit, creativity and joy. But then mum wanted to go for a walk with Jack, and then it was dinnertime, and then Jack ran into a doorframe and fell on a plastic bottle and cut his lip and trapped his fingers in a door and it was JUST AWFUL, and it's just really good he can't speak yet. None of you are allowed to report us, either. And my books aren't at all neat or tidy, and I can't quite bring myself to count them and do statistics, tonight.

So the lists are going to have to be slightly off the hoof.

And dude. Mel Gibson gone crazy.

I was going to do that '5 songs you're into' meme. But then I realised there's only really one at the moment. Which I'm certainly not playing on repeat. No. Never. So here is a mix of songs I like right now and songs I pretty much always have time for. Because I haven't given away music in ages.

  • Fill My Little World by The Feeling. Show some love. You ain't so tough.

  • I heard Twelve by Forward Russia! a couple of months ago, and it became one of my favourite songs ever in a matter of weeks, and I sort of named my journal after all of it in love. So enjoy. Those who like the 'Ninety-nine, two hundred and five' bit best will know they are Good like me.

  • Golden Touch by Razorlight. I'm not sure why, but it's been running through my head for the past few days. Probably because the new album came out last week or so. Never let it be said my mind is any kind of fortress.

  • Shoes by Jesse James. I loved it ages ago, and it has rude bits I didn't realise were there before, but I love it still yay!

  • Amazed by Poe is creepy and lovely and great. Bonus points to those who spot all the House of Leaves references.

  • Doo Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill. I used to play it on repeat years ago. I just rediscovered it and play it on repeat still. I'm not a huge fan of her, but it is class.

  • Worry About You by Ivy is another one. Theme song of Kingdom Hospital, so I'll always associate it with little dead girls and broken dolls, but it is creepy and beautiful all the same. Someday I'll get around to listening to the rest of the album...

  • And I can't imagine there's anyone around who hasn't heard of the Smiths, but I'll throw This Charming Man in anyway. Just because.

Mostly I try to apply them to any and all of my current fandoms/pairings, regardless of fit. Though Elizabeth from POTC actually quite suits Golden Touch. And Veronica and Logan should show some love, because they ain't so tough. And I play them until I sort of can't hear them anymore. And pimp them to my friends :)
girlofprey: (Barty Crouch Jr close-up)
Lemony Snicket! Has its own song! On the audiobook, over the titles, it has its own song, with synth chords and everything! The lyrics are as follows:

'This abyss,
This lightless void,
This abyss,
Of worlds destroyed.
Even in the darkest forest,
Fireflies are flick'ring,
But not in this abyss,
Of black and [something]...'

How much do I love it?? Also, Daniel Handler's voice = yum.

Spoilers for Lemony Snicket book 6. Oh, and 7 )

Also, Fables: The March of the Wooden Soldiers )

Anyway. Squee over. I'm still loving Must Love Jaws. James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful' is 100% BETTER when sung to a gigantic shark.

And, to pass the time:

How this works:
1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc
2. Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts. Or not. As you please :-) Any questions. All the questions. I don't care.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.

Let's face it, there's a lot of scope here.

You Should Be a Film Writer

You don't just create compelling stories, you see them as clearly as a movie in your mind.
You have a knack for details and dialogue. You can really make a character come to life.
Chances are, you enjoy creating all types of stories. The joy is in the storytelling.
And nothing would please you more than millions of people seeing your story on the big screen!

Hurrah?

Probably hurrah, yes. Though writing anything at this point would be a plus.

The one bad thing about copied DVDs people have kindly made for you is that you can't screencap them, or I don't know how to. If so, I would naturally have iconned Damien looking mock-yearningly at Henry's nephew for, like, five whole minutes. And also Dave bending right over Damien's legs/lap to get something from under his desk. Because omg. I'm contenting myself with how hurt Damien looked when the nephew suggested his style was dated. And missing having [livejournal.com profile] tiniago here to squee with :'(

But I watched Green Wing, finally. I watched the Green Wing with Guy in the coats. Guy crying in the coats. Guy with his broad chest and leaning right over Sue White and staring into her face and crying and screaming and offering the sex and omg. I laughed in the face of Guy!het once. No more. It is matched only slightly by him shamelessly, disregardingly using his tragic past to seduce a blond nurse with big teeth (from Man Stroke Woman). And putting his face very very beautifully close to Caroline's while he cautions her about using locks.

He just needs to have sex with everyone.

The spoilers (I didn't mean to, but yes) for next season are making me boggle. Boggle, I say. It is very kind of the universe to put it on so close to my birthday. Thank you universe. And cheers for the American Gothic DVDs, as well.

I'm meant to be having a lecture at 4. Except that last week our tutor said that we 'would not be having a lecture in that room', and I thought she talked about emailing us with the room change, but I haven't heard anything yet. So I'm starting to think she meant a lecture at all. But I can't be sure.

I could go home. Or read. But I choose to waste some hours on the internet (conveniently close to my inbox) instead. Hence, a few memes:

New Snaps Cup Meme! Which you should all totally do yourselves as well.

And, snagged from a few people but probably mostly [livejournal.com profile] nerdcakes: Name a character or pairing! Watch me I ramble on about it!

You can pick characters and pairings I don't know if you, but my ramblings might be slightly random and inexplicable.

Apparently I need a Fantasy Pirate League. No-one warned me about this, but I think I need to do it BEFORE MORE PEOPLE STEAL THE BEST CHARACTERS.

Thusly:

Captain: Me. Oh yes. Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water/own plunder. Mwuhahaha.

First Mate: Barty Crouch Jr. He would lead all attacks and be in charge of all sneaking-into-places-dressed-as-other-people plans. And would seriously get pissed at people who were not 120% loyal to me. This would probably somehow involve making him love me as he loves Lord Voldemort. But I think I could do it. Yes.

Second Mate: Guy from Green Wing. He will be in charge of Bitching People Out when they slack off even a little, and also of hanging out in the Captain's room looking pissy and adorable. Probably he would occasionally help out with anaesthetising people when the ship's doctor so required it. And he would be GREAT at it. Naturally.

Third Mate: Violet from Lemony Snicket. How could I forget her? Somehow I did. She would be in charge of inventions and plans and just generally keeping us all afloat and being the rational one. She probably deserves to be First Mate, but the others would only grumble discontentedly. I think she has the humility to be Third Mate, tie her hair up in a ribbon, and get on with it. I love her.

Cooks (3): I don't know. Do we need cooks? Can't we just eat what we plunder? Um. Anton Gorodestky from Night Watch. Probably he is canonically useless in the kitchen, and uses knives for all the wrong things, like opening windows/totally not trying to kill the scary noises behind him - but I think the peace and quiet of learning to cook below decks on a pirate ship would suit him. Yay. And Pyro from X-Men 2. He could channel his adolescent rage into sauces and grilling. Also he'd be very good at adjusting the oven temperature. And present a nasty suprise to any intruders thinking the cooks were easy targets. And Gay Perry from Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. I indulge in numerous horrific stereotypes that he would be able to cook because he is gay. He's also incredibly wonderfully handy with a gun, and again with the intruders-who-think-the-cooks-are-easy-targets-HAHA! Probably he would also take Pyro under his wing. Which would be lovely. Yay.

Crew (12): Nick from Sea of Souls. He wears lovely scarves and is quite skilled with a shotgun. So long as we keep him away from women he seems to think he is in love with and let him have quick passionate sex with Craig down in the cargo bay quite regularly, he should be okay.

The Hook-Handed Man from Lemony Snicket. Do any of your pirates have a hook for a hand? Mine has two hooks for hands! And is probably quite skilled with them. And has deliciously ambiguous 'morals', while also clearly being semi-good under a bad influence in the books. He could have secret liaisons with Violet which she prefers to pretend aren't happening. Hurrah.

Draco Malfoy. Possibly he will piss people off and need to be kept away from the rest of the crew. Which will probably please him a bit. But I think his magical skills and icy beauty will probably come in all kinds of useful, and he could finally win the respect he deserves.

Jack! Jack from King Kong (2005)! He would seem awfully useless, but turn out to be THE BEST OF THEM ALL when pushed to the very limit. Also he would mysteriously have to live in a cage, with a typewriter. He would be the sensitive, intellectual pirate that I could have late-night chats with over whisky, though he never tells the rest of the crew. And he would stop the people from getting to carried away in attacks, and BLIND THEM WITH HIS HEAVENLY BEAUTY!

Cholo from Land of the Dead. He gets things done, capiche? Also he has a stake gun, and is well-trained in dealing with zombie attacks, and that's probably going to come up sooner or later, right? Also he sometimes does shirtless pull-ups where everyone can see. No bad thing can come of this. He is somewhat prone to back-door dealings (not like that! That I know of!) and mutinies, but hey, I've got Barty Crouch Jr protecting me! And they can have sweaty, angry sex to work off that tension. Hurrah.

Spangler from Malcolm in the Middle! He has a fake leg, a hook and an eyepatch! And he has military training and discipline, and tactical plans. And speaks conversational French. He would have his own personal cabin boy, who would be Francis. Ooh, or he could be the one who deals with stowaways! Which would also be Francis. Yay.

I have a sad lack of female kick-ass crew, so Marla Singer, from Fight Club. Her job would mostly be smoking and wearing lots of make-up, but she's pretty fierce when people cook her mother push her too far. She'd do very well with swords, I feel. Hurrah.

Sawyer from Lost. It's a step up from a desert island, surely? He's a fairly decent fighter, and really not bad-looking, which is sort of my main reason. Also very sneaky and not averse to starting Black Markets, which every ship should have. I think he'd do quite well. He would have a gun, not a sword. He would totally guard our backs, while pretending not to. Because I pay him the best.

Rose from Doctor Who. She would have to stop talking about her family and 'the Doctor' first though. And do more of that swinging/kicking action from Episode One. I feel the need for someone with ultra-blonde hair, for some reason.

Edward Norton. I don't know where from, I don't know how, but I want him. He is mine. I replaced Edward Norton. With Will Scarlet, from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He is equally pretty, and can throw knives! And is already used to the life of an outlaw. And has angst, 11th Century medieval angst. He will fit in well, I think.

Elphaba from Wicked. She could totally base her Animal rights activities from the ship. Mine is an equal rights vessel. Probably we would have to make her something all-covering and transparent, so she would not be hit by sea spray. Or she could just stay indoors mostly. But she has her flying broom so she would never have to worry about going down with the sinking ship, and she has full permission to leave us all behind in such a case. How great would Elphaba be with a sword though? Pretty damn great!
ETA: I replaced Elphaba too. I think the sea is just not for her. By which I mean, I decided the sea probably wasn't for her, remembered Flying Snow from Hero kicked some serious ass, wanted her, then wanted them both and decided they could form a team, since Flying Snow can in fact protect people from flying drops of water with her sword. And her red clothing would look awfully good with Elphaba's green skin/black dress. So yes. I cheat, and I don't care!

Mark Z Danielewski. I don't know what he looks like, so he would mostly stand in the distance, on the other side of whatever part of the ship I was on, looking out to sea, and muttering things under his breath. And writing. Very often writing. Jack would try to go talk to him sometimes, but would come back with a disturbed look on his face and be silent for a Good Long While afterwards. One look from him would quell any resistance on the ship's we plundered. It would be some form of magic.

Cabin Boys: Craig from Sea of Souls. [livejournal.com profile] lakester has already claimed him, so I will specify that it will be Season 2 Craig, with his lovely shirts and hair, hah! He will be mostly in charge of techy things (for I don't think he could survive without a laptop. We'll have to go wireless) and living in the same cabin as Wade. And taking care of him. I can't see this not leading to sex.

Preston from Celebrity Big Brother. The magic is gone slightly since he left the house, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be back when he was trapped with lots of people on a ship. He could have a picture of Chantelle to inspire his adorableness, BUT NO MORE!

Ship's Surgeon: Wade from Sea of Souls. He has medical training and, when that fails, magical healing powers. Which should save on supplies. However, he does tend to go a bit faint after healing, and also take on the injuries he has healed. But mostly faint. Someone will probably need to almost always carry him back to his cabin, and take care of him, and then fall asleep from exhaustion hours after he is asleep, and sleep on after he wakes up, so he can calmly and fondly watch them as the boat rocks. This person will be Craig.

Navigator: Yockenthwaite from Roger and the RottenTrolls. Anyone who doesn't know the show will be TRAGICALLY unaware of the glory of his skillz.

I love my crew. Probably I will think of a hundred more suitable crew members when I get home. But I love them! We fly the dread 'R For Raygun' flag, and dock in Newcastle yearly for Connotations! ALL YOUR BOOKS ARE BELONG TO US!

Visit from parents did not happen due to Jack being ill - not seriously, but enough that they want to stick around and help Katie out. Hence I am back spending my free time on the internet as usual. Probably I will.
