And has anyone else heard about Lost? Apparently they're intending to finish it, for good, in three seasons. It was going to be two (at least), but now they've decided on three at 16 episodes each, instead of two at 24. So 2010 is meant to be the big finale. Huh.
And Violet/The Hook-Handed Man is great! Hurrah.
I have also finished Blackadder Goes Forth. They all wear leather and suspenders, and I don't think that's very fair. But it is great. I love Kevin Darling. This probably isn't much of a suprise, given that I've been spreading the news far and wide, but - I do. Why did no-one tell me he was played by Tim McInnerny, aka Percy from series 2? Why did it have to come from this guy? I love him. I love that he spent two lifetimes as Edmund's adoring, unappreciated idiot friend, before getting himself reincarnated as his frustrated slightly smarter enemy. I love that he is still TIED UP WITH LOVE FOR HIM and doesn't know why. He twitches! He breaks his pencil! Blackadder calls him 'Darling', and he can't say anything about it! It is beautiful. And they are a good pairing, which is nice. Blackadder stares at him, a lot. At one point Darling says something about not having been born yesterday, and Blackadder says 'that's a shame, we could have started your personality from scratch', and I love it when people say things like that, because it's basically like saying 'I'd really like you if you weren't such a complete tit'. Lucas Buck says something similar about Matt in one episode of American Gothic, and it is yay. Anyway. WHY ISN'T THERE MORE BRITISH COMEDY SLASH??? But there is actually fic for this pairing, which is a beautiful and rare occurence for me. Rabbitholes and Foxholes features the twitch, and OH GOD OH GOD. No Man's Land rescues me from the bleakness of the final episode. Choose Life gets a special mention just for the suggestion that Darling might alphabetise the paperclips. Yay. And Tinlow Industries is...an AU where they're both 18 in America, working as cashiers and bagging boys in the same shop. It's not actually that bad, even if they once again have Darling EVEN CAPABLE OF SAYING OR UNDERSTANDING WHAT HE WANTS. Dude.
I love Yuletide for supplying me with most of these fics. I keep thinking about signing up for this year (if I can), then backing out because of my general intertia in that area. Also there are strange new rules I'm not sure I understand. And I might have missed the fandom sign-up date. Hmph.
Anyway. Back to Lemony Snicket. I'm pretty sure I won't finish it tonight, but I have some train journeys tomorrow. It's all good. Then maybe I'll finally get round to writing that con report. Um. Yes.
Anyway. Now I have the last book of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Have had it for over five hours, thanks to the cunning trick of asking if I could nip out from work to get a book, and then going and getting it. But I haven't started it yet, and can't see how I will with about ten things happening tonight alone. Not least of which is new Higniffy. With Peter Serafinowicz. Mmm. But also - it's the end. It's The End, I know, but it's THE END. Everything is going to have to be tied up in this book. Everything. The Baudelaires. Olaf. The Hook-Handed Man. Lemony Snicket. What if it's a terrible end? And what if it's a Terrible end? Which is perhaps what I should be expecting from the series?
It is very pretty and green though.
Mostly I just want all my characters to be alive at the end of the book so I can fic them without having to AU. I'm sick of having to AU people alive again. The power of life and death is so for the suck. Anyway. I will probably be back after Higniffy and QI. Possibly with at least the first few chapters under my belt. We shall see.
Anyway. I have not talked Connotations again. Yet. But I did finish almost all the filing! It's sad that that's my big news nowadays.
This weekend is starting to look like a bit much. Not only is the final Lemony Snicket book out on Friday (for which I plan to sneak out from work), but it's also when they've finally decided to release the Garth Merenghi DVD, so Play.com should send it for Saturday, and there's new QI, and Have I Got News For You is starting again. And I might not live. Locks and no LJ might be required to pull it off. I have faith in my utmost skills however. Sort of.
Speaking of which: Authortracker sent me vile videos for Lemony Snicket. One is a Bob Dylan rip-off, you know you want to see it. On the site I found out they're bringing out The Complete Lemony Snicket collection. The box is deeply beautiful, though the island is a bit of a Book the Thirteenth spoiler. But - there is a snake offering Violet an apple. Why must my fandom taunt me like this? What are they expecting me to think now? WHY MUST THEY MAKE ME HOPE?
But on the other hand, I think this SnickWiki illustration of the Hook-Handed Man is fug, and I do not believe it is canon.
Today I got to go file on the fourth floor, for the Geotechnical people. The scoffs of horror I met with whenever anyone mentioned that job should have given me some warning about it (though it was still better than the alternative of putting hundreds of almost identical A0 drawings in the right order). The man in charge said there would probably only be about 15 job numbers/piles to sort documents into. He lied. I think I can justifiably refer to him as the Prince of Lies, in fact. And now I have to put it all in date order, and do the actual filing. Which is apparently "slightly different" to the downstairs system. My fear. The reminder of my paycheck in two weeks is all that keeps me going, I think.
Also, melata_fic said she'd jump on the Hook-Handed Man/Violet bandwagon if I wrote some fic. So I dug up one of my old plotbunnies. Voila.
Fandom: A Series of Unfortunate Events
Pairing: Violet, the Hook-Handed Man
Notes: Sort of a vignette/pre-fic. Set during 'A Bad Beginning', probably partly inspired by some of the visuals from the movie. Slightly dark. PG-13.
Disclaimer: I don't own them. I just play with them. I am not Lemony Snicket. Honest.
Feedback: Appreciated. Believable characterisation would be nice.
( Whisper )
Editing still gives me a headache.
This lightless void,
Of worlds destroyed.
Even in the darkest forest,
Fireflies are flick'ring,
But not in this abyss,
Of black and [something]...'
How much do I love it?? Also, Daniel Handler's voice = yum.
( Spoilers for Lemony Snicket book 6. Oh, and 7 )
( Also, Fables: The March of the Wooden Soldiers )
Anyway. Squee over. I'm still loving Must Love Jaws. James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful' is 100% BETTER when sung to a gigantic shark.
And, to pass the time:
How this works:
1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.
Let's face it, there's a lot of scope here.
La. I have new Fables. And am intent on getting the first Sandman novel, if I can find it. Neil Gaiman seduced me in Waterstones. It was all very fast, I'm not sure what happened. Amazon is not being very helpful so probably I'll end up tracking down a comic book store. I probably shouldn't be spending my first wage before I have it, but - it was never very likely I wouldn't in the first place.
Suburban Shootout was on. I didn't watch Sugar Rush. Suburban Shootout is over. I'm quite sad. But there were guns and explosions, and Joyce lolling in the Unsubtle Lesbian's arms, and Hilary making untoward remarks in the interrogation room, and it was ALL VERY GOOD. Joyce/Camilla forever. DVD soon please.
Things that please me:
- Eerie Indiana is out on DVD soon. It's amazing how fast I went from 'Oh, I remember that show!', to 'MUST HAVE DVDS. WANT. OUT NOW? OUT NOW?'. Perhaps the first of my random-and-strange-supernatural-type-
shows. With pretty jailbaitboys, naturally.
- Lemony Snicket 6 on audio CD! For squeeing over the doorman! I just need an hour or two to listen to it now. The only problem with uploading it to iTunes for that purpose is that sometimes in the middle of 'shuffle' I end up stopped short trying to skip past Tim Curry and all the ironic turns of phrase.
- I love Jaws! Oh, two gay boys and their shark. There should be Jaws slash. I have realised these sorts of declarations from me don't have much impact anymore.
And, as a counterpoint to all this randomness, I've decided I have too many fandoms. I'm going to make a list, and try to prune them a bit. Channel my energy, instead of being a fannish butterfly...on crack.
I made new icons. New text icons. I have made icons I have dreamed of making for months, and mostly for their sake bemoaned my inability to put text on icons. I'm not entirely sure you can read the text. I can. I don't know how they'll look on your computers. But yay! I MADE THE ICONS. My dream is come true. Probably you won't understand them if you haven't seen the Lemony Snicket movie, or listened to the Smiths. But I made them. Here they are:
I prefer Violet's face on the first her one - but I think you can actually read the text on the second. Perhaps I'll make a new one for her. But eeee. Happy :)
Total Film reached new heights of bastardy today. Much like Empire, they had a choice of covers. 3 covers. All were Narnia. The one with the queen was prettiest. It had swords. But then they put the mag in a plastic bag so you could not see which one you were buying! Arses! But I bought one anyway, and have ripped the bag a bit, and I got the Queen one! I beat the system! Yay :D
Damien Lewis is on TV next week. He is in a Shakespeare play thing. Yay. I am hoping for slash. But his red-headed loveliness will be enough. Urge to buy Forsyte Saga boxset rising....
I have reading week next week. I could go visit the House o' Pink. I have been semi-invited. But I have been rather ruthlessly stolen by my radio show. And I'm going to see a play. Bought tickets and everything. And - yes. They are in London at the moment and can't get me about it, HA!
I am torn between watching the HIGNFY they will be in the audience for tomorrow or going to see a play by a young Russian playwright. I do see a little of my insane love for Night Watch in the desire to go see this play. I am possibly sort of expecting Anton to be in the lead role. Although I loved Russia and Russian things long before Night Watch. I could go see the play on Saturday. And go to bonfires/fireworks slightly later. Hmm.
This was meant to be a short post.
I am randomly happy today. Hurrah.
Also I just had some pick'n'mix. Mmm.
Went out for halloween, after much self-debate/overthinking. Was a doll. Which essentially meant I got to wear a nice dress and coat and put a bit (lot) of white make-up on my face, and lipstick. I tried to do the scary blinking, but it didn't really pan out. But flatmates and I had fun, and made some random movies on K's phone (I'm a star!). Oh, and small people came to the door, in costumes, with lights, and I gave them galaxy ripples, and I was filled with the halloween spirit, and yes. We did not have a pumpkin. J carved an orange. I was not amused. But it was fun. Yes :)
Past halfway with Lemony Snicket 12. It has gotten dark again. I like it best when it is dark. You won't know what I'm talking about but ( Spoilers )
I don't know why I'm not hearing more about the 12th book from my ASOUE comms, but ah well. Maybe they've all lost interest - I'm the last safe fan! Ah well.
In other news, I want to live on a pirate ship.
And I have learned how to put text on icons using Microsoft Paint. Which inexplicably looks much more indistinct when saved than it does in the paint programme. But anyway - as such, behold my crappy text icons! Which I'm inexplicably proud of! You'll probably be seeing a lot of them in the weeks to come :)
I'll download Photoshop someday. Probably.
And; people are doing Nanowrimo. People are freaking out about Nanowrimo. ::Hugs/valium:: to them. I am thinking about Nanowrimo, if it is even possible, and despite the catch-up I would have to be doing. My old plot, which I actually had and everything, is haunting the back of my head. But I'm actually enjoying writing plain old fanfiction at the moment. And making crappy icons, which have a wordcount now! So hmm. Yes.
Also watched the 'Best of' (in the loosest term possible) Changing Rooms. Oh the hilarity. And not just Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen's hair/Anna Ryder Richardson's existence.
Am reading Freud. I think I quite like it. Not as dense as I thought it would be either. Not sure I agree with the part my flatmate told me about how fetished objects are a replacement for the penis, because it's SO traumatic seeing that a woman hasn't got one. This slightly gay I think also. Yes.
Read more new Lemony Snicket as well too. ( Spoilers )
( Potential spoilers )
And once again, a Night Watch post which is much longer than I intended it to be. But I think I'm done now. Roll on Day Watch.
I have far, far too much reading to do for next week. A 300 page novel. AND 600 pages of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Woe. I considered buying Sun Tzu's 'The Art of War' in Fopp today as well, but a quick check of the balance reveals I have minus money again. So perhaps not.
I do have the new Lemony Snicket though. First chapter reactions = ( More spoilers! )
I have all the books of the series, except the Unauthorised Autobiography.
I went on Amazon.co.uk for the Unauthorised Autobiography, and found it. Sadly the only ones that even claimed to be in good condition were at least £25, sometimes just £20. Sometimes as much as £50. The RRP is £5.99. But the book is out-of-print elsewhere, so these appeared to be my only choice.
There were of course a much cheaper non-hardback edition, also available on Amazon, but - look at the hardback one. Look at it's prettiness. If you were to buy the book, you'd buy that one, wouldn't you?
I was sorely tempted to buy it, but counted my funds, counted the £25, and forebore. Oh, how I forebore. Time passed. The book remained. The 'like new' condition ones went. All but the £50 one went. Some new 'like new' condition ones came in. But I was saving for uni, and forebore again.
Today, I was in town looking for a birthday present for my sister, and quite randomly went into WH Smith (she doesn't like books). And I quite randomly - I hardly ever do it even when looking for myself - looked at the little shelf of obscure little books marked down at sometimes 50%. And there, at the front of one of the shelves, was the hardback, beautifully coloured, almost pristine edition of Lemony Snicket's An Unauthorised Biography. For £2.99.
I grabbed it like a she-wolf.
It's on my desk right now. I don't even want to read it. I don't even want to touch it. I just want it to be there, here, on my desk. I'm trying to figure out how to get the paper 'binding' off the book without breaking it, so I can put it back on when I'm done and pretend it's all new again. There were numerous I'm sure amusing incidents in the shop of me clutching it in my hands while I distractedly looked at other things, and then suddenly looking down at it again, just to MAKE SURE it was the book, and was in my hands, and was actually real.
- I love WH Smith's.
- Omg, BOOK!
Also I opened my Zaphod
I watched some Drop the Dead Donkey!( Hurrah! )
Also I watched my old Giant DVD. Why is there no slash? Why is there no James Dean slash? In this one he is an angry insubordinate cowboy called Jett, who has lots of 'tension' with his ranch boss, who is Rock Hudson. ( Spoilery, although NO-ONE WILL EVER WATCH IT! ) And he has a lot of unlikeable moments as Jett, and the boss isn't all that squeeful, but there should still be slash. Hmph.
But omg, afterwards I found Lemony Snicket fridge magnets ::salivates:: I bought them. I will stick them most places. Sadly there is no Hook-Handed Man, but there is plenty of Violet. She wears a red dress! It has too many buttons, but is very good. And in one she is holding the grappling hook of book one, and it looks a little bit like the Hook-Handed Man's hooks, and I remembered that he caught her hook in his hooks, and it is just my pairing summed up in one image. Hooked. It is yay. Hurrah :D
Lost will be on soon. I hope tonight's will be slashy. Yes. Also I got a book from one of my autumn modules' reading list - check me out, all studious and whatnot - and started reading it because it is plays and they are easy, and there was incest on the first page! Hurrah. I would have liked to have done the Jonson module, but Caroline Drama is looking pretty good at the moment.
And I hereby pimp:
Why did no-one tell me about the wonder??
Young Al Pacino as Sonny, the loveliest bank robber ever, who knows all about bank insurance and can outwit the tricksy cops and FBI agents! ( Spoilery, but lovely! ) And wears sexy shirts of openess and sweaty t-shirts underneath!!1!1 ::dies with lust, and love::
I love the manager. I love Moretti. I love Sal and Leon. I love the girls. I love Sonny!!! And it's SO obvious that everyone else does too. Sonny/Leon! Sonny/Sal! Sonny/the crowd! Sonny/the phone! Sonny/Moretti (touching of wounded forehead! ::explodes:: Hurrah!)! Sonny/Sheldon! 11!
In conclusion: I love this film! I don't care how much money they take from me, I will own the DVD, even if I have to sell my body to cannibals and my mind to daytime TV! OMG!
Other film news:
- A sequel to the Lemony Snicket movie! Hurrah! Hopefully with added Hook-Handed Man! :D
- Omg, Adam Brody is in Mr and Mrs Smith! As a tiny assassin of pretty! ::makes a note to see this film omg::
